Western Washington Blanks Simon Fraser

Emily Frankland scored an early goal that proved to be the difference as Western Washington blanked Simon Fraser 1-0 in a GNAC women's soccer contest Wednesday at Orca Field.

It was the third straight win for the Vikings (6-3-2, 5-2-0), who have won five of their last six games.

Simon Fraser (1-8-0, 0-7-0) has lost seven straight, including the last four by 1-0 margins.

The Vikings started quickly, earning a corner kick and getting their first shot in the opening minute. The early pressure continued and eventually paid off in the eighth minute when Justina MacDowellplayed a through ball to Frankland, who finished from 12 yards out for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Western had a 15-0 shot advantage in the first half and a 27-2 margin for the game. Simon Fraser didn't have a shot until the final 15 minutes.

The Clan did have a good chance to score with 10 minutes left, when Ali Trenter got through on a breakaway, but Western defender Emily Warman recovered to break up the threat in the penalty area.

WWU goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs made one save in picking up her sixth shutout of the season. Amelia Ng had six saves for Simon Fraser.
