Montana State Billings Defeats Simon Fraser 4-1

Montana State Billings took just four shots but still managed to earn a 4-1 home win against Simon Fraser Thursday at Yellowjacket Field in Billings.

In other GNAC women's games, Central Washington, Western Washington and Seattle Pacific were all victorious.

The Wildcats (3-2-2, 2-1-0) got a goal from Nicole Laughlin in the 83rd minute to beat Western Oregon 2-1.

The Vikings (3-2-2, 2-1-0) blanked Northwest Nazarene 2-0 holding the Crusaders (3-4-0, 1-2-0) to just five shots.

The Falcons (6-0-1, 3-0-0) ran their win streak to five with a 3-0 shutout of winless Saint Martin's (0-5-2, 0-3-0) as MacKenzie Laird scored twice.

Three of the four shots MSUB (5-1-1, 2-0-1) took off of Simon Fraser's defense found the back of the net and the Yellowjackets added an own goal at 84:54 to complete the scoring.

MSUB allowed Simon Fraser (1-4-0, 0-3-0) to take just six shots, including one by Anna Brancati at 51:13 which resulted in the Clan's lone goal and tied the contest at 1-1.

Jennifer Larsen, however, converted a header off a corner kick by Adrienne Biglow to give MSUB a 2-1 lead at 50:59. Amanda Brusic added an unassisted goal at 79:00 prior to the 'Jackets own goal nearly six minutes later.

Laughlin's game-winner in Central Washington's victory came from 22 yards out after she took a pass from Alex Jensen.

It came just 73 seconds after Western Oregon midfielder Lindsay Bauman scored an equalizing goal in the 82nd minute when she floated a shot over the head of Wildcat goalkeeper Kori Butterfield.

Amy Pate scored CWU's first goal in the 22nd minute thanks to nifty passing from teammates Carson McKole and Savanna Moorehouse.

McKole found Moorehouse, who headed the ball to Pate on the left side of the goal and the senior found the right side of the net to give CWU an early 1-0 advantage.

Western Oregon (2-3-2, 1-1-1) lost despite outshooting the Wildcats 30-14. Two CWU goalkeepers - Kayla Lipston (7 in 68:10) and Butterfield (4 in 21:50) combined for 11 saves. Brittney Rigtrup had two saves for WOU.

Midfielder Emily Frankland scored a goal in the 14th minute and Brina Sych added an insurance tally at 46:49 in Western Washington's victory.

Frankland's goal was her third of the season, half of WWU's season total of six. She scored from eight yards out with her left foot.

The shot came off a cross from Katie Griffith and went off the goalkeeper's hands into the back corner. Sych's goal came off a corner kick in the 47th minute.

One of the defensive stalwarts for WWU was freshman Brianna Jones, who spelled all-star Alicia Patten. Patten, who is recovering from a hip flexor, played just 30 minutes.

“We could have played Patten more, but Jones was just fantastic in the back,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for WWU goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs, who made one save. That improved her goals against average to a GNAC-best 0.53.

Ali Martin scored Seattle Pacific's first goal at 15:32 after stealing a pass outside the Saints box. She looped a 25-yard shot over goalkeeper Gina Cardenas that nicked the underside of the crossbar on its way into the goal.

Laird netted her initial goal less than seven minutes later. Megan Lindsay dribbled down the right side of the box and served a low pass across the goalmouth that found Laird at the left post for an easy tap in at 21:56.

In the second half, Laird directed a low, 20-yard blast just inside the right post at 58:28. She had two late opportunities for the hat trick, but her first attempt sailed wide. Laird had a 10-yard attempt in the 87th minute denied by a diving save from SMU reserve goalkeeper Ashley Engel.

Goalkeepers Natalie Harold and Brooke Yokers combined for the Falcons fourth consecutive shutout. SPU, which is ranked 21st nationally, has not surrendered a goal in their last 385 minutes and have outscored their opponents 17-1 during the five-game win streak.

Harold made two first-half saves before being replaced at halftime by Yokers, who was credited with three saves. SPU outshot the Saints by a 23-7 margin.
