First-Year Head Coaches Get GNAC Wins

Marina Austin scored goals in the 16th and 60th minutes and goalkeeper Brittney Rigtrup posted her third consecutive shutout as Western Oregon opened its 2011 GNAC conference campaign Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of Northwest Nazarene.

Meanwhile, Montana State Billings got three goals from Jaucelyn Richter and two assists from Heidi Greenback to defeat Saint Martin's 3-1 in its conference opener.

Both teams were playing their first conference games under new head coaches. WOU is now 2-2-1 overall under first-year coach Steve Ancheta; MSUB is off to a 4-1-0 start under interim coach Wojceich Krakowiak.

In the final game of the night, Central Washington earned a road win defeating Simon Fraser 2-0 at Burnaby.

Brittney Rigtrup needed to make just one save as WOU ran its shutout streak to three, the first time it has accomplished that feat since 1997. Rigtrup leads the GNAC with a 0.37 GAA and has a .882 save percentage.

Austin's first goal at 15:37 came on a breakaway after she took a pass from Kymberly Witmer. She then made it 2-0 shooting the ball into the back left of the net after receiving the ball from Lauren Vieira.

Katrina Kem completed the scoring at 81:14 converting a lob from Lindsay Bauman.

WOU outshot Northwest Nazarene (2-3-0) by a 16-6 count and also had a 7-2 corner kick advantage.

Richter's goals came at 4:45, 32:07 and 76:17 after Saint Martin's had taken a 1-0 lead at 3:48 as Ashley Richardson converted a rebound off the crossbar.

Richter's first goal came from four yards. Greenback then flicked the ball to Richter for the go-ahead goal at 43:07.

Richter completed her hat trick - the 43rd in the 11-year history of the conference - at 76:17 mark after taking a pass from Greenback on a one-touch feed.

No woman player has ever scored more than three goals in a GNAC contest.

Greenback leads the GNAC in scoring with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Richter has nine points on four goals and one assist.

MSUB outshot Saint Martin's 17-7. 'Jacket keeper Danielle Gordon had two saves; Gina Cardenas had five saves for SMU (0-3-2).

“I'm really proud of our team and the way they played today,” said Krakowiak. “I thought we played one of our best games all season and put away the chances we were given. We played well as a team and really moved the ball well.”

Carson McKole streaked right through the Simon Fraser defense and beat goalkeeper Amelia Ng to give Central Washington an early lead (2:05) in its win.

With 13 minutes left in the first half, the Wildcats struck again when Danielle Brandli beat Ng as CWU (2-1-2) avoided overtime for the first time in five contests this fall.

Central had a 10-7 shot advantage as Kori Butterfield had three saves to post the shutout. Ng made five stops for the Clan (1-2-0). Each team took five corners.
