NAMPA, Idaho – Alex Donigian of Western Washington and Karolin Anders of Alaska Anchorage earned GNAC Male and Female Outstanding Performer honors in leading their respective teams to titles in the 11th annual GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Jacksons Track at the Ford Idaho Center.

Both teams were the defending champions; the title was the fourth for the Vikings and the second for the Seawolves since they started sponsoring indoor last year.

Donigian swept the 60 meters and 200 meters for the second year in a row in meet-record times of 6.75 and 21.79, respectively.  His 60 time is also an all-time GNAC record.

Anders was the meet’s top point producer winning both the pentathlon Friday with a meet-record score of 3,640 points and the triple jump Saturday (36-10 ½). 

She also finished second in the high jump (5-3 ¾), third in the long jump (18-0 ½) and eighth in the shot put (38-4 ¾).

Anders’ points were among 154 scored by the Seawolves, seven more than they scored in winning their first championship last year. 

Seattle Pacific, which won the first nine GNAC Indoor women’s titles before finishing third last year, finished second with 125 points.

Anders was one of four female athletes to win two events. 

UAA’s Joyce Kipchumba swept the 5,000 (17:22.40) and 3,000 meters (10:01.01) and also finished second in the mile (5:04.36) to finish the meet with 28 points.

Seawolf sprinter  Jamie Ashcroft won both the 60 (7.69) and 200 (in a GNAC and meet-record time of 24.69).

Tanya Bjornsson of Western Washington matched Kipchumba’s point total, winning the women’s long jump (meet-record 19-1 ¼) Friday and the 60 hurdles Saturday (8.72).  She also finished second in the 60 (7.89) Saturday.

She now has six career individual titles – three in the 60 hurdles (2011, 13-14) and one each in the long jump and 60 (2013).  She also finished her indoor career with 81 career individual points to rank second in GNAC history in back of Ali Worthen of Seattle Pacific who scored 110 between 2009 and 2012.

Tayler Fettig of Central Washington finished fourth in the individual point race with 23 points, setting a meet-record and tying the GNAC record in winning the high jump (5-9 ¾) Saturday.  She also finished second in the pentathlon (3311) and fourth in the long jump (17-11 ¾) Friday.

Donigian and UAA’s Micah Chelimo, who was the men’s top-point producer with 26 points, were the lone two-event winners on the men’s side.

Chelimo set meet records in winning both the 5,000 (14:50.02) Friday and the 3,000 (8:28.35) Saturday.  He also finished third in the mile Saturday (4:13.90).  Last year he won all three races.  Chelimo’s performance helped earn the Seawolves second place, just 21 back of WWU’s winning 157 point total. 

Two other UAA athletes had record-setting performances.  Ethan Hewitt set GNAC and meet-records in winning the 400 meters in a time of 48.31 and Cody Thomas set a meet record in claiming the GNAC heptathlon title with 4,904 points.  UAA also set a record in winning the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:16.09.

Two other  record setters Saturday were Peter Maguire of Western Washington who won the 60 hurdles.(8.24) and Robert Peterson of MSU Billings who won the mile in a meet-record time of 4:11.05.

Other men’s event winners on Saturday included Josh Hanna of Western Oregon in the men’s 800 (1:54.14), Luke Plummer of Central Washington in the triple jump (46-3 ¼), Greyson Kilgore of Northwest Nazarene in the pole vault (14-10), and CWU’s Kevin Stanley in the weight throw (58-1 1/4).

Other women’s winners Saturday were Seattle Pacific’s Kishia Mitchell in the 400 (57.00), Sarah Sawatzky of Simon Fraser in the 800 (2:08.57), SPU’s McKayla Fricker in the mile (5:00.37) and Vessie Umu of Northwest Nazarene in the shot put (43-10 ¾).

The wins for Mitchell (60 meters in 2012) and Fricker (800 in 2012) were the second career indoor victories for each.

Umu’s win  helped the host Crusaders, who  finished third in both divisions, total exactly 200 points – 116 1/3 by the women and 83 2/3 by the men.
