NAMPA, Idaho - Defending men's champion Western Washington got wins from Brett Watson in the high jump, Kevin Yates in the long jump and Jason Gilbert in the shot in opening up a 40-point lead after the first day of the GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday at Jacksons Track at the Ford Idaho Center.

The Vikings lead Alaska Anchorage 78-38. No other men's team has more than 19 points at the end of five events.

The women's team race, however, is much closer.  Northwest Nazarene, which got a GNAC and meet-record performance from freshman Alison Silva in the pole vault, takes a six-point lead over Western Washington (51-45) going into Saturday's action.

Defending champion Alaska Anchorage is in third place, but is just 10 points back of the Crusaders with 41 points.  Central Washington and Seattle Pacific, are fourth and fifth with 33 and 32 points, respectively.

Watson set the GNAC record in the high jump earlier this winter with a leap of 6-9 3/4.  He cleared 6-8 3/4 in winning the conference title Friday.  Yates won the long jump for the second year in a row with a leap of 22-10 1/2, and Gilbert edged teammate Frank Catelli by 10 3/4 inches in winning the shot with a put of 52-10 3/4.

Alaska Anchorage got a win from Micah Chelimo in the 5,000 meters.  Chelimo, who won the mile, 3000 and 5000 last year, started his bid for another "triple" winning the 5K in a meet-record time of 14:50.02.  He is the national leader in that event.

UAA's Cody Thomas took the lead in the heptathlon scoring 2,797 points.  Among his marks was a meet-record time of 7.08 in the 60.  Central Washington's Justin Peterson set a multi-event meet record in the high jump (6-6) and is second in the pentathlon with 2,577 points.

Simon Fraser won Friday's men's distance medley relay in a time of 10:07.19.

Silva cleared 12-10 in the pole vault to lead Northwest Nazarene to the Day 1 women's team lead. She bettered the old GNAC record of 12-9 1/4 by Karis Anderson of Western Washington (2012) and the old meet record of 12-9 by Mellisa Peaslee of Seattle Pacific (2008).

Tanya Bjornsson of Western Washington also set a meet record in winning the long jump.  She won two events last year in scoring 33 points and earning the Outstanding Female Performer honors, but the long jump was not one of the two. She placed second in that event.

Bjornsson, however, added that title to her resume with a leap of 19-1 1/4, eclipsing the old mark of 18-9 3/4 set by Danielle Ayers-Stamper in 2005 and matched by WWU's Emily Warman last season.

Alaska Anchorage's women got two record performances Friday as Karolin Anders came from behind in the final event to win the pentathlon with a meet-record score of 3,640, eclipsing the old record of 3,505 by Katy Gross of Seattle Pacific last year.

Jamie Ashcroft tied the meet record in the prelims of the 60, posting a time of 7.67 and matching Lasha Essien's 2010 record.

The Seawolves also got wins from Joyce Kipchumba in the 5000 (17:22.40) and from its distance medley relay team (11:58.61).

Also earning a win Friday was Caitlin Curtis of Northwest Nazarene.  She finished first im the weight throw with a mark of 50-10.

Tayler Fettig of Central Washington finished second in back of Anders in the pentathlon with 3,311 points, setting marks for a multi-event in both the 60 hurdles (9.09) and high jump (5-6 1/2).

Action resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the final three events of the men's heptathlon.   The first field events (men's weight throw, women's high jump) start at 10 a.m.  The opening ceremonies are scheduled at 11 a.m.
