PORTLAND, Ore. - The first events of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships - the decathlon and heptathlon - get underway Monday at Tomlinson Stadium on the campus of Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.

The decathlon begins Monday at 10 a.m. The heptathlon is scheduled to start at 10:30. The rest of the meet will be held May 9-10 at Monmouth, Ore., on the campus of Western Oregon University.

Eleven athletes, including defending champion Cody Thomas of Alaska Anchorage, are entered in the men's multi-event, while 10 women will compete in the heptathlon.

Thomas, who scored 6,392 points in winning last year's conference championship, ranks sixth nationally in the decathlon with a best of 6,940 points.  That is the No. 2 all-time score in GNAC history.

UAA's Karolin Anders, who finished second last year with 5,034 points, currently ranks seventh in Division II with 5,048 points.  That puts her fifth on the GNAC All-Time Career list.

Thomas' score is more than 1,000 points higher than Northwest Nazarene freshman Micah Spatz, who ranks second this spring with 5,758 points.    Maddi Hommes of Seattle Pacific has the second best women's score.  She netted 4,510 points last week at Azusa Pacific in the Mt. Sac/California Invitational Multi-Events.

Prior to the multi-events, GNAC athletes are scheduled to compete in  five meets Saturday including the Western Washington Vernacchia Invitational at Bellingham. Joining the host Vikings will be athletes from Central Washington, Saint Martin's, Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser and Western Washington.

Also on Saturday's schedule is a dual between Simon Fraser and British Columbia.  Meanwhile, Western Oregon will send athletes to both San Diego and Gresham, Ore., for the UCSD Triton Invitational and the Mt. Hood Festival.  Northwest Nazarene will travel to Pullman for the Cougar Invitational.
