ALASKA PROVIDES SHOCKER TO OPEN SECOND HALF: The second half of the GNAC season began with Alaska stunning Seattle Pacific to put an end to the Falcons’ near-record win streak.

Behind a 38-point performance by junior guard Shadeed Shabazz, the Nanooks collected an 83-77 win over the Falcons on Thursday in Fairbanks. The victory put an end to a 14-game win streak for SPU, which was one short of the school record and ties for the sixth-longest in conference history.

Alaska led 34-31 at halftime, but had to come back from a seven-point deficit early in the second to secure the victory. The Nanooks took the lead for good on Alex Sommerfield’s three-pointer with 11:36 left and would eventually build a nine-point lead with 3:39 left. Alaska finished with 32 points in the paint and 18 fastbreak points.

“This was a signature win for our club,” said UAF head coach Greg Sparling. “Our guys really stepped up when they needed to. We got down in the first half and our guys battled back and our guys answered at halftime. It was really a difference of two halves. We fell in love with the three in the first half but later I thought our guys did a nice job getting downhill towards the rim.”

NIGHTHAWKS EARN TEAM OF THE WEEK HONORS: The hottest team in the conference resides in Nampa.

Northwest Nazarene extended its winning streak to seven games last week with wins at home over Western Washington (87-64) on Thursday and Simon Fraser (81-77) on Saturday to earn GNAC Team of the Week honors.

The Nighthawks scored 28 points off of 17 forced turnovers to go with 30 points off the bench while limiting Western Washington to 37.7 percent from the field in the 23-point rout of the Vikings. Riding that momentum into Saturday, the Nighthawks sunk 51.8 percent from the field in the four-point shootout against the Clan as four players scored in double digits. It took some time, however, for them to take control of the game.

“Thursday was an emotional win for us and we felt a letdown coming,” head coach Paul Rush said about the Nighthawks’ early struggles against the Clan. “We talked about it and it still happened, but their ability to respond to that adversity is impressive.”
