PORTLAND, Ore. – The winter break has come and gone. Now, the only thing standing in front of a conference championship for GNAC women’s basketball teams is each other.

All 10 teams will return to conference action this week after capping off 2023 with non-conference contests. Heading into the first games of the new year, No. 14 Western Washington and No. 17 Montana State Billings both remain in the top 25 of the national rankings. The two teams are joined by Central Washington in the regional rankings as all three look to lead the field to the GNAC Women’s Basketball Championships on March 7-9.

Both the Vikings and the Yellowjackets will be on the road this week with WWU heading north to face the Alaska schools along with Simon Fraser while MSUB and Seattle Pacific face Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene. Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s both have a bye on Thursday ahead of their matchup on Saturday in Monmouth.

Player to Watch

Kiylynn Dawkins, Western Oregon

Dawkins has shown an ability to grow in her second full season for Western Oregon. The redshirt sophomore forward is on pace to eclipse her scoring total from last season, racking up an average of 10.1 points per game. That scoring touch sees Dawkins ranked No. 22 in the league in scoring while her incredibly efficient shooting from the field ranks her No. 3 in the conference at 60.4%. Along with her reliable work on offense, she has added a clear defensive edge to her game with 95 rebounds in just 13 games, already just seven shy of her total from a season ago. That consistency on both sides of the ball sees Dawkins tied for 22nd in Division II with five double-doubles so far.

The Beaverton, Ore., native notched her first double-double of the season on Nov. 25 at Azusa Pacific. Dawkins finished with 12 points on 6 of 7 from the field to go with a then career-high 13 rebounds against the regionally ranked Cougars. In the month of December, Dawkins tallied double-digit points in every game for Western Oregon and picked up double-doubles in each of the last four games against Oregon Tech, Linfield, Willamette and Lewis & Clark.

Against the Pioneers, Dawkins finished with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to cap off the calendar year. Coming off of six straight starts for the Wolves, Western Oregon will likely look to Dawkins to help the team climb the standings as it resumes GNAC action on Saturday against Saint Martin’s.

GNAC in the National & Regional Rankings

The WBCA Division II rankings and the D2CSC rankings are released every Tuesday throughout the season and are the two leading polls nationally. The WBCA top-25 is voted on by a panel of coaches, while the D2CSC top-25 is a poll constructed by sports information directors at Division II schools.

Both Western Washington (9-2, 1-0 GNAC) and Montana State Billings (11-3, 2-0) remained in the top 25 of the WBCA poll through the winter break with the Vikings moving up to No. 14 and while the Yellowjackets slipped back one place to No. 17 after going 1-1 at the Daytona Beach Shootout.

The script was flipped in the D2CSC rankings where MSUB stayed steady at No. 15 in the national rankings and leapfrogged WWU in the regional ranking to lead the west for the first time since Nov. 21. The Vikings remain within the top 20 of the D2CSC national rankings at No. 19 and stay in the top two of the west region for the sixth straight week. Central Washington (11-3, 2-0) also maintained a presence in the regional rankings at No. 6 after extending its win streak to eight games.
