30 FOR 30: It seems like just about any week in the GNAC these days some player is busting out with a 30-point scoring performance.

To date, a total of nine players have eclipsed the 30-point barrier 12 times. Of those 12 performances, seven have come in conference games. For reference, there were 28 total 30-point performances by GNAC players during the 2018-19 season.

Three of those 30-point efforts belong to Alaska guard Shadeed Shabazz. The junior has the conference’s best scoring effort of the season, a 43-point breakout against Concordia on Dec. 7 that ties him for the 10th-best scoring performance in GNAC history. He has since posted a pair of 30-point efforts at Saint Martin’s on Jan. 2 and against Simon Fraser on Jan. 9.

Seattle Pacific freshman forward Shaw Anderson is the other player to have more than one 30-point effort. Like Shabazz, Anderson has posted those in back-to-back weeks with 33 points against Alaska on Jan. 4 and 34 points at Western Oregon on Jan. 11. Thanks in part to those scoring performances, Anderson has been named the GNAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week each of the last two weeks.

VIKINGS EARN TEAM OF THE WEEK HONORS: The Western Washington men’s basketball team was triumphant last week as the Vikings swept the Alaska schools to extend their winning streak to six games and earn selection as the GNAC Team of the Week.

Western Washington escaped with a 74-70 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Thursday before scoring a 71-63 win over Alaska on Saturday. Down by three points at the half, the Vikings limited UAA to 30.8 percent shooting and outscored the Seawolves 36-29 in the second half to hand them their second conference loss.

The Vikings pulled off another come-from-behind win on Saturday. After scoring just 29 points in the first half, the Vikings erupted for 42 points in the second half, shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, to run away with the eight-point victory over the Nanooks.

“Our play and success lately have been defensive-driven,” head coach Tony Dominguez said. “I am really happy with the focus and intensity the team has had in these recent games, and the defense has been critical to our success.”

SPEAKING OF STREAKS: The winning ways for Seattle Pacific just continue. After losing their first four games of the season, the Falcons have now won 10 straight and enter the week with a 10-4 overall record. They also stand in first place in the GNAC with a 6-0 record.

In those 10 wins, the Falcons are outscoring opponents by an average of 14.9 points per game and are outrebounding their foes by nearly eight per game. The wins have also seen SPU shoot 53.2 percent from the field, 42.5 percent from three-point range and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line.
