PORTLAND, Ore. - Three spots in the GNAC Championships have already been secured by Alaska Anchorage, Western Washington and Simon Fraser, leaving three spots available with three weeks left in the season. Seattle Pacific is the only team with a mathematical chance to clinch a berth this week, but the Falcons will have to get through two tough tests at home against Western Washington and Simon Fraser.

The Falcons lost to both teams on the road during a four-game skid earlier in the season, but SPU has earned sweeps in each of the last two weeks leading up to the rematches. The Falcons played particularly well last week, beating their opponents by a combined margin of 62 points on the road.

Seattle Pacific will host Western Washington on Thursday. The Vikings are currently on a 13-game winning streak, which is the third longest active streak in the West Region. They are ranked No. 12 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and tied for No. 21 in the WBCA Coaches Poll.

Western Washington holds claim to Division II’s leading scorer Taylor Peacocke, who is averaging 22.8 points per game this year. The defense, however, may be the most impressive aspect for the Vikings right now. They have held opponents to an average of just 57.2 points in their last five victories.

Simon Fraser, which will play Seattle Pacific on Saturday, suffered a surprising overtime loss to Central Washington last week. The Clan still managed to clinch its berth into the GNAC Championships for the fifth consecutive year thanks to some help from Seattle Pacific, which beat Montana State Billings. It was the first time this year that Simon Fraser lost to a team with under a .850 winning percentage.

Simon Fraser won its first game of last week in what turned out to be a free-throw shooting contest against Northwest Nazarene. The two teams made a combined 71 free throws, which accounted for more than a third of all scoring in the game. Northwest Nazarene made 37 free throws, which was one shy of the all-time GNAC single game record. The Clan attempted 46 free throws, which was four away from another GNAC record.

This week the Alaska schools will go to Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington. Alaska Anchorage is looking to build on its 17-game winning streak, while Alaska and Northwest Nazarene each need wins to improve their chances of reaching the GNAC Championships.

Central Washington, which is two games out of sixth place, looks to build on its upset of Simon Fraser last week. The Wildcats are two games behind sixth place tied with Montana State Billings. The Yellowjackets will travel to Western Oregon and Concordia this week after having swept both teams earlier in the season.

Concordia and Western Oregon will get the week started in Monmouth on Tuesday night. The Cavaliers won the first meeting between the two teams, 55-46 thanks to a 13-point performance off the bench by Kizzah Maltezo.

GNAC TEAMS IN THE RANKINGS: Alaska Anchorage remained No. 2 in both the WBCA and D2SIDA national polls behind unanimous No. 1 Ashland. Western Washington moved up to No. 12 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and is tied for No. 21 in the WBCA Coaches Poll.

Following the loss to Central Washington, Simon Fraser dropped out of the WBCA poll, but remained in the top 25 of the D2SIDA poll, coming in at No. 22. In the D2SIDA West Region rankings, Alaska Anchorage remained the unanimous No. 1. All six voters also picked Western Washington at No. 3, while Simon Fraser narrowly remained No. 4 in the poll.

The GNAC is also represented in the D2SIDA West Region Rankings by Seattle Pacific at No. 7, giving the conference four of the top seven spots. The CCAA has three teams in the top 10 with UC San Diego at No. 6 and Chico State and Cal State East Bay at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively. The PacWest also has six teams with California Baptist as the unanimous No. 2, Point Loma at No. 5 and Hawaii Pacific at No. 8.
