PORTLAND, Ore. – As conference play rolls on this week, two of Division II’s top programs are set to meet for the first time in 2024 as No. 15 Western Washington plays host to No. 18 Northwest Nazarene.

The Vikings (15-2, 0-0 GNAC) were off last week as they’ll look to get the conference portion of their schedule off on the right foot. Northwest Nazarene (16-2, 4-0) swept Simon Fraser on the opening weekend of conference play and enters the colossal series having won six games in a row. Doubleheaders are set for noon (Pacific) on Friday and Saturday at Viking Field.

The intriguing matchup between the conference powers pits the league’s top-two pitching staffs against the top-two offenses. The Nighthawks hold a team ERA of 1.56 which ranks eighth in Division II, while the Vikings carry an ERA of 2.01 which ranks 22nd in division II. NNU meanwhile also leads the GNAC in batting average at .314 and runs per game at 6.11, while WWU ranks second in both categories at .295 and 5.65, respectively.

NNU’s Sidney Booth is at the forefront of both sides of the ball, ranking 21st in Division II with a 0.77 ERA and 14th with a 0.77 WHIP. Booth also leads the GNAC with an on-base percentage of .551, while ranking second in the league with a batting average of .423. NNU features a second ace of sorts in Gina Skinner, whose 1.29 ERA ranks third in the league and .198 opposing batting average ranks fourth. NNU’s offense is bolstered by a trio of .400 hitters, with Emma Bumatay hitting .421 and leading the team with five home runs and 20 RBIs. Clarissa Moreno owns a .403 batting average and leads the GNAC with eight doubles while ranking second with 20 runs scored

Western Washington’s ace thus far has been freshman Kaiana Kong, who ranks second in the conference with a 1.02 ERA across 34 1/3 innings pitched. Kong has impacted games in numerous ways, collecting six wins and a pair of saves while holding a WHIP of 0.93 to rank in the top-50 nationally. Alli Kimball (2.12 ERA) and Joie Baker (2.53 ERA) give the Vikings three standout pitchers on their staff, with the latter leading the team and ranking fourth in the GNAC with 40 strikeouts. Offensively, reigning GNAC Freshman of the Year Hailey Rath leads the team with a .390 batting average, while reaching base at a clip of .409 and slugging .610. Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez leads the team and ranks second in the GNAC with six home runs, and Ashley Jacobson has delivered four home runs while hitting .382 this spring.

This Week's Storylines

SEETON NATIONAL POTW: A six-home run week for MSUB’s Teagan Seeton was enough to earn the sophomore the NFCA National Player of the Week honor. Seeton took advantage of an eight-game week for the Yellowjackets, batting .600 and collecting all six of her long balls in a five-game span. The power surge lifted her to No. 1 in the conference and 10th nationally with nine home runs on the season. Seeton and the Yellowjackets (7-16-1, 1-3) salvaged a win in the series finale against Western Oregon, and they’ll look to take that momentum into a four-game series at Central Washington (3-16, 1-3) beginning on Friday.

COLLINS PITCHES WOLVES TO 3-1 GNAC START: Western Oregon knew they were getting an ace in UTEP transfer Mackenzee Collins, but the start to her WOU career has been even better than the Wolves could have projected. The right-hander ranks second in the conference with 66 strikeouts, after mowing down 26 hitters last week including a 2024 GNAC single-game high 13 in her outing against MSUB. Collins also holds the fourth-lowest ERA in the league at 1.58, while limiting the opposition to a .201 batting average across 62 innings pitched.

BOOTH SHUTS OUT RED LEAFS: Northwest Nazarene senior Sidney Booth delivered a pair of shutout pitching performances last week, helping the Nighthawks complete a four-game sweep of Simon Fraser. Booth upped her career total to 26 shutouts, ranking her third in GNAC history in that category. The GNAC’s career strikeout leader, Booth also ranks eighth among active Division II pitchers with 657 strikeouts in her tenure at NNU.

Leverington carries a 2.01 ERA, and leads the conference with four saves this spring.

DUCLOS CONTINUES SB PURSUIT: Leading the GNAC with 15 stolen bases this season, Simon Fraser’s Megan Duclos has climbed to No. 5 in GNAC history with 73 steals in her four-season career.
