Part of a regular series.

Throughout the year, GNACsports.com uses this space to profile conference student-athletes who are members of their respective institutions’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In addition to providing feedback on the student-athlete experience, conference and institutional SAAC members also offer input on the rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Name: Emmett Klus
Sport: Cross Country/Track and Field
Institution: Western Oregon
Year: Fourth Year
Major: Exercise Science
Hometown: Burns, Oregon

Why did you choose to attend WOU?: I chose Western Oregon because my brother had been there and it was familiar. When I came to visit the campus, I loved Monmouth and felt like the track team was really inviting and competitive. Being from a small rural community, Monmouth and the surrounding area was a step up in size that wasn’t too overwhelming for me.

What is your favorite class you have taken in college?: Biomechanics has been my favorite class because it was fun to be able to use math and physics to solve problems concerning human movement.

How many years were you involved in SAAC?: Two years.

What made you want to be involved in SAAC?: I chose to get involved in SAAC because I felt that it was an opportunity to have a positive influence on my school and my athletic department. I feel that the athletic department as a whole has done so much for me and SAAC is my way of giving back to them and to my community as well.

What is your most memorable SAAC activity to date so far?: My favorite SAAC activity is the Wolfies, our athletics awards show at the end of the competition year. It takes a committee all year to plan and I love to see the athletes come together and appreciate each other’s accomplishments.

How do you feel participating in SAAC will help you in life after you graduate?: I think that SAAC has given me an opportunity to solidify my skills in working with a group to reach a common goal. I think that this experience will help in my professional life.

What is the most important thing you've learned from balancing the demands of athletics and academics?: I have learned that both athletics and academics compliment the other. I have always felt that having a schedule for practice and meets have always helped me stay focused on school and school has helped me stay focused on athletics as well.

What is the biggest obstacle you have overcome during your collegiate career?: I would say that an injury during my junior indoor season was the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with. On top of that, I was taking the hardest classes that I ever had. Those moments of struggle taught me a lot of patience.

What does it mean to you to be a Division II student-athlete?: The Division II experience to me has been about balance. The balance of school, athletics, social life and how all of those things mix.

What is the best advice you would give to an incoming freshman?: I would say to learn to be patient with yourself and to be patient with others. Both are important and I feel that it's common for people to neglect one or both. The college experience is a privilege but that doesn’t mean that it is easy and you should give yourself and others time to grow into the challenges that you will face.

What is your favorite sports-related moment?: My favorite sports-related moment was claiming our first GNAC indoor track and field championship since 2012. Last year, I was injured during that time, so being able to contribute to close a win was satisfying.

Favorite Sports Team: Besides the Western Oregon Wolves track team, the Portland Trail Blazers.

Favorite Athlete: Damian Lillard.

What is one thing that people don't know about you?: My favorite food is Bush's Baked Beans.
