Cross Country Report: UAA Holds on to National Rankings

PORTLAND, Ore. - Alaska Anchorage maintained its No. 5 and No. 7 rankings in this week’s USTFCCCA women’s and men’s national cross country polls released Wednesday.

The two Seawolf teams are among seven GNAC teams ranked nationally.  Joining UAA in the men’s national poll are Western Washington (10th) and Western Oregon (20th).  The women’s poll also features Simon Fraser (9th), Seattle Pacific (24th) and Western Washington (31st).

Alaska Anchorage also maintained its No. 1 ranking in this week’s women’s USTFCCCA West Regional poll.  Simon Fraser (3rd), Seattle Pacific (4th) and Western Washington (7th) are also in the Top 10. 

Chico State is the No. 1 ranked men’s team in the West Region. Chico is followed by Alaska Anchorage (2nd), Western Washington (3rd) and Western Oregon (4th).  Seattle Pacific (8th) and Northwest Nazarene (10th) are also in the Top 10.

The top five finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the regional meet Nov. 3 at Honolulu will advance to the national meet Nov. 17 at Joplin, Mo.

This weekend six of the GNAC's 10 teams and most of the top runners will take the week off in preparation for next Saturday's GNAC Championship meet at Monmouth hosted by Western Oregon.

Teams in action this weekend include Western Oregon, Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser and Montana State Billings.

The Wolves will compete Friday in the Oregon City Mike Hodges Invitational.  On Saturday, Seattle Pacific and Simon Fraser will send runners to Seattle for the Emerald City Invitational at Woodland Park.  Montana State Billings will also host its annual home meet.

Last Saturday, Alaska Anchorage's Micah Chelimo and Susan Tanui swept the individual titles in the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham.  Chelimo won the men's 10,000-meter event in a time of 31:12 to earn his eighth career win including three this season.

Tanui remained unbeaten in three races this fall winning the women's 6K in a time of 21:31.

The Seawolves won the women's team title with a team score of 41 and finished second in the men's division, three points back of the University of Victoria (37-40).

Northwest Nazarene finished second in both the men's and women's divisions at the Boise State Open.  The top individual placers for the Crusaders were Curtis Capell in the men's division and Jordan Powell in the women's division.  Capell placed 11th in a time of 16:33.  Powell finished sixth in a time of 19:32.  Both races were 5,000 meters.
