LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After the first 18 holes of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf West/South Central Super Regional, Simon Fraser and Western Washington remain in position to grab a top spot at the University Golf Course.

The Clan is in 14th place after completing round one with a score of 299. They sit 13 strokes back of first place Oklahoma Christian with two rounds to go. Simon Fraser is led by senior Kevin Vigna, who shot a 1-over-par 72 in the first round. After accumulating five bogies on the front nine, Vigna rebounded with three birdies and no bogies on the back nine to sit tied for 16th place.

Sophomore Chris Crisologo is one stroke back of his teammate at 2-over-par 73, tied for 24th place. Sophomore Marcus Brown is tied for 52nd place at 4-over-par 75 in the 108-man field. Senior Bret Thompson and sophomore Michael Caan each carded scores of 79 in the opening round.

After dominating the GNAC Championships with a record performances, Western Washington started the super regional slowly. The Vikings are in 19th place with a score of 308, but still have 36 holes to make up ground on the top teams.

Juniors Brett Johnson and Chris Hatch lead the way for the Vikings with scores of 5-over-par 76. Junior Jeffrey Marcum and freshman Michael Butler are each just a couple strokes back at 78, while freshman Cody Roth shot a 79.

Individually, Dallas Baptist’s Josh Aguilar leads the way at 3-under-par 68. The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals May 17-21, at Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colorado.
