Freshman Sean Russell scored the lone goal late in the first half just seven minutes after entering the game for Seattle Pacific which upended 16th-ranked Grand Canyon 1-0 in a NCAA West Region game at the GCU Soccer Field.

Earlier in the day, Cal Baptist got a goal in the 36th minute from Osvaldo Bastida in a 1-0 win over Western Washington at GCU.

Seattle Pacific won for the eighth time in its last nine outings, improving its overall record to 8-2-1. GCU dropped to 7-3-1 and had its unbeaten streak stopped at five games. Earlier this season it also lost to Simon Fraser.

Russell collected a short clearance by the Antelopes defense and took a touch at the top of the box before directing a strike into the lower left corner at 42:24. That was the third collegiate goal for the midfielder and his second game-winner.

Goalkeeper Zach Johnson preserved the narrow margin with three saves en route to his sixth shutout. Adam Garcia had one save for GCU, which was outshot by a slim 9-8 margin.

The Cal Baptist-Western Washington game was also evenly played with both teams putting just two shots "on goal". Lancer goalkeeper Joey Pacheco had two saves to post the shutout.

“We didn't really play that well, but we had some chances and weren't able to make them,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.

Viking midfielder Kellan Brown had a one-on-one chance in the 15th minute, but Pacheco made an outstanding save.

In the 36th minute, Bastida reaching the net from the right side of the box, his fourth goal of the season

Late in the first half, the Vikings' Caden Sowers just missed on a cross from Oscar Jimenez and with five seconds left in the game Keith Ferris headed a corner kick just wide.

Cal Baptist had a 10-8 edge in shots and WWU had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
