Men's Golf: SFU's Mike Belle Shoots 69 in NCAAs

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Simon Fraser's Mike Belle eagled his final hole to card a two-under par 69 Wednesday in the final round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at The Meadows Golf Course.

Belle, who started the round in 63rd place finished 30th with a 54-hole total of 224 (77-78-69). His round equaled the fifth best of the day. 

Four players carded 68s Wednesday including Tim Crouch of Florida Southern who earned medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 213.  Crouch finished one shot ahead of Adam Sevensson of Barry, who also shot a 68. 

Belle's round helped the Clan to shoot 300, its best of the tournament.  The Clan finished with a team score of 918 after carding team scores of 312 and 306 Monday and Tuesday, respectively, and ended up in 17th place.

Belle, the GNAC Men's Golfer of the Year, started on the backside on the par-71, 7,034 yard layout and recorded eight pars and a birdie.  His birdie came on the 203-yard Par 3 13th hole as he finished the side with a 34.

On the front side, he started with six pars before bogeying the par-3 seventh to drop to even on the day.  But, he then finished his tournament in fine fashion earning a 3 on the par-5, 510-yard ninth.

Belle's 69 was Simon Fraser's only sub-par round of the tournament.  Bret Thompson, Kevin Vigna and John Mlikotic all shot 77s Wednesday, while Craig Titterington carded an 80.

Thompson ended up with a 54-hole total of 229 (74-78-77) to tie for 63rd, while Vigna and Mlikotic shot 232 (81-75-77) and 233 (81-75-77), respectively, to tie for 78th and 80th.  Titterington had a 54-hole total of 242 (81-81-80) and finished tied for 103rd.

Two California Collegiate Athletic Association teams - Chico State and Cal State Monterey Bay -  finished in the Top 8 in the team standings and will advance to the match play portion of the tournament. 

Nova Southeastern finished first with a team score of 863.  Barry, Fla., finished second with a 887 total, four ahead of Chico State.

Central Missouri and Malone tied for fourth with 890 team scores.  Lynn, Fla., placed sixth with a 893 score. while Monterey Bay and Indiana U. of Pa., tied for seventh with 895 scores, edging North Alabama for the final playoff spots by one stroke.
