SFU Tied for 16th at NCAA Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Despite improving on its Round 1 score by six strokes, Simon Fraser slipped one spot down the leader board and is currently tied for 16th place after two rounds at the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships at The Meadows Golf Course. 

After notching a 312 on Day 1, the Clan responded with a 306 on Day 2 on the par-71, 7,034-yard course to push their two-round total to 618.

SFU freshman Kevin Vigna and junior John Mlikotic each shot a 4-over par 75 in Round 2, with Vigna making birdie on three holes. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and championships medalist improved upon his first-round score of 80, while Mlikotic recorded a six-stroke improvement over his first-round 81. 

GNAC Golfer of the Year Mike Belle and Bret Thompson each scored a 78 in Round 2. Thompson led the Clan on Day 1 with a 3-over par 74, while Belle shot one stroke behind his first-round score of 77.

Rounding out the field with an 81 was Craig Titterington, who matched his score from Round 1.

Nova Southeastern maintained its grip on the lead, despite shooting eight strokes worse than its Day 1 total of 287. Currently holding a score of 582, Nova Southeastern sits seven strokes ahead of second-place Chico State with one more round to play.

Currently leading the individual race is Santiago Gomez of Nova Southeastern, who shot back-to-back par rounds of 71. Close behind is Harry Wetton of Western New Mexico at 143 (73-70), and three players are tied for third place at 144.

Following Wednesday’s Round 3, the top eight teams will advance to a round of match play to determine an NCAA champion.
