SFU Tied for 15th After Day 1 of NCAA Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Shooting a first-round score of 312 on Monday, Simon Fraser’s men’s golf team currently sits in a tie for 15th place at the NCAA Championships at The Meadows Golf Course.

SFU was led by Bret Thompson on Day 1, who shot a 3-over par 74 on the par-71, 7,034-yard course. Thompson made eagle on the par-5 ninth hole, notching the lone eagle for the Clan on the day.

Also breaking the 80 mark for SFU was Great Northwest Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year Mike Belle, who checked in with a 6-over 77 in Round 1. Belle mixed in a pair of birdies to go along with his nine par holes the first time through the course.

GNAC Freshman of the Year and conference championship medalist Kevin Vigna finished Day 1 with a score of 80, and John Mlikotic and Craig Titterington were close behind, each at 81.

Leading the 20-team field after the first round of competition is Nova Southeastern, which logged a 3-over par 287 on Day 1.

Play resumes Tuesday morning with Round 2 teeing off at 7:30 a.m., Eastern time.

Following the first three rounds of competition, the top eight teams will face off in match play to determine an NCAA champion.
