PORTLAND, Ore. – A combination of COVID restrictions and classes kept Simon Fraser’s Estee Leung off the course for much of the season but not from the top of the leaderboard as the lone four-time selection to the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Golf All-Academic Team, presented by Barnes & Noble College.
Leung, a senior with a 3.97 GPA as a biomedical physiology major, participated in just two tournaments in 2021-22 but made the most of them. She was SFU’s leading player at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, tying for 13th place with a three-round score of 11-over-par 227. At the GNAC Championships, Leung proceeded to tie for third with teammate and fellow All-Academic honoree, sophomore Natasha Kozlowski, at 12-over-par 154.
Leung leads a total of 23 All-Academic Team selections and is among 11 repeat selections and eight selections to make the team with a 3.80 GPA or higher.
The All-Academic Team includes four of the five top finishers at the GNAC Championships. The list includes Western Washington sophomore Elise Sumner, who took medalist honors, and Vikings junior Megan Billeter, who tied for fifth.
Joining Billeter as three-time honorees are Montana State Billings seniors Kinsey Irvin, Tierney Messmer and Jalen Wagner; Northwest Nazarene senior Hannah Holloway and Saint Martin’s senior Katherine Swor. All five players participated in the GNAC Championships.
Messmer and Saint Martin’s junior Kathryn Crimp both made the All-Academic Team with 4.00 GPAs, Messmer as a health administration major and Crimp as a mathematics and secondary education major.
Montana State Billings led all GNAC teams with five All-Academic selections. Northwest Nazarene and Western Washington each had four selections.
To qualify for the GNAC All-Academic Teams, presented by Barnes & Noble College, nominees must be of sophomore eligibility or greater, have a minimum cumulative GPA or 3.20 or greater, be a letterwinner on their team and must be in their second year at the nominating institution.
