Vikings Finish Second Round Of West Regional In Ninth Place

DENTON, Texas – Western Washington remains in ninth place on the team leaderboard after Tuesday’s second round of the NCAA Divison II Women’s Golf West Regional at the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas.

Western Washington is making its 11th Division II Championships appearance this week. After finishing Monday’s opening round with a score of 319, the Vikings faced challenging conditions to turn in a second-round score of 331. They sit 17 strokes back of eighth-place Westminster (Utah) at 650.

Sophomore Sarah Shea and freshman Elise Sumner lead the Vikings in a four-way tie for 36th place with scores of 161. Shea carded 10-over-par 82 in the second round after shooting 7-over-par 79 in the first round. Her round included a pair of birdies on the back nine. Sumner, the GNAC Player of the Year, turned in a second-round score of 83, which included pars on nine of the 18 holes.

Freshman Dani Bailey had the best round for the Vikings on Tuesday, carding 9-over-par 81 to come into a three-way tie for 42nd place with a two-round score of 163. Junior Kolby Heggenes sits in a tie for 46th place at 165 while freshman Sophia Schmidt rounds out the Vikings in 48th place at 173.

St. Mary’s (Texas) stays atop the team leaderboard after the second round with a score of 587. West Texas A&M sits in second place at 599 while Dallas Baptist is right behind at 600. Sofia Ruescas of St. Mary’s extended her lead to two strokes after shooting 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday. She remains in first place at 3-under-par 141 while Oklahoma Christian’s Camilla Jarvela is within striking distance at 1-under-par 143.

The final round of the West Regional will begin on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. (CT) with the Vikings starting at the 10th hole. The top three teams from each regional tournament and the top three individuals not on those three teams will advance to the finals on May 11-15 at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, Michigan.
