A PAIR OF LOSSES, BUT NO MOVEMENT IN THE POLLS: Both GNAC teams that are ranked in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll took losses last week but the setbacks did nothing to affect their place in the rankings.

Alaska Anchorage was stunned by a four-set loss at Simon Fraser on Saturday with the Red Leafs coming together to have four players finish with double-figure kills. The loss ended the Seawolves’ 13-match win streak and was the team’s first conference loss of the season.

The effort to beat Alaska Anchorage, along with a three-set sweep of Alaska on Saturday, earned Simon Fraser selection as the GNAC Team of the Week.

The Seawolves did not wait to rebound, scoring a four-set win at Western Washington on Saturday in the second showdown of the season between the two ranked programs. The visitors surged to hit .308 as a team but had only one player finish with double-digit kills.

That player was senior right-side hitter Eve Stephens, who set a GNAC record for kills in a four-set match with 33. She surpassed the previous record of 32 set by Alyssa Given of Seattle Pacific against Western Washington on Nov. 2, 2006. Stephens also finished with nine digs, three assists, two blocks and an ace.

For the week, Stephens finished with impressive averages of 6.88 kills, 2.88 digs, 0.62 blocks and 0.25 aces per set with a .414 hitting percentage. The performance earned Stephens her fifth GNAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week award of the season and her sixth overall GNAC Player of the Week award for the year. She was also named the AVCA Division II Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The losses did nothing to drop the teams in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll. Alaska Anchorage is at No. 9 for the third straight week while Western Washington is No. 10 for the second straight week.

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, GNAC teams are starting to jockey for positions in the NCAA West Region Rankings, which will determine which teams advance to the postseason. The first regional rankings will be released on Wednesday.
