MONMOUTH, Ore. - Brett Watson won two events Friday as Western Washington took the first-day lead in the 2015 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field Championships at McArthur Field.

Meanwhile, Seattle Pacific won three events in opening up an eight-point lead over two-time defending champion Alaska Anchorage in the women's meet.

Watson swept the high jump (6-7) and long jump, breaking a 49-year school record in the latter event with a leap of 24-1 3/4.  That broke the school record of 24-0 3/4 set in 1966 by John Hunt.

"He had a masterful performance and did a great job of competing," WWU coach PeeWee Halsell, said, noting he went well over 25 feet on his last attempt, but fouled.

Watson's high jump win was his third straight.

The Vikings also got a victory in the discus from defending champion Ryan Macdonald with a throw of 166-1 as they scored 72 points.  Alaska Anchorage is in second place with 52 points.

UAA scored 28 of its points in the final event of the day, the 10,000 meters, as defending champion Victor Samoei led a 1-2-3 sweep.  Samoei finished first in a time of 31:36.09.  Freshman Henry Cheseto was right behind Samoei in a time of 31:46.83 and Dominik Notz was just two seconds back in third with a time of 31:48.91.

Other Day 1 winners included Oliver Jorgensen of Simon Fraser and Kevin Stanley of Central Washington.  Jorgensen succesfully defended his steeplechase crown, winning in a time of 9:08.42.  Stanley, who is the defending champion in the hammer, won the shot with a put of 50-11, two feet farther than Macdonald, who finished second.

Anna Patti, Michaella Kahns and Kyra Brannan all picked up victories Friday for Seattle Pacific's women as they scored 57 points.  Patti won the 10K in a time of 37:00.02 and Kahns finished first in the pole vault with a mark of 11-9 3/4.  Brannan finished first in the long jump with a leap of 18-4 1/2.

Brannan's leap was 3/4 of an inch farther that heptathlon champion Karolin Anders of Alaska Anchorage, who finished second. UAA completed the day in second place with 49 points.

In addition to the three SPU athletes Friday's winners included Katelyn Steen of Western Washington in the steeplechase (10:14.16), the Vikings' Megan Mortensen in the discus (142-10) and Emmi Collier of Western Oregon in the shot put (45-7).  Steen broke the meet record of 10:24.44 by UAA's Susan Tanui (2012) in her event.

Two other meet records were also broken in preliminary events.  The Seawolves' Jamie Ashcroft set a meet record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.81.  She also had the best time of the day in the 200 prelims, clocking 24.51.

WWU's Travis Milbrandt ran a time of 14.21 in the 110 hurdle prelims to break both the GNAC and meet record.  He set the GNAC record of 14.30 earlier this spring.  Logan Myers held the old meet record of 14.65 from 2013.
