Directions to Jacksons Indoor Complex

PORTLAND, Ore. - The final opportunity for GNAC track and field athletes to qualify for the 2013 GNAC Indoor Track and Field championships will be this weekend at Seattle and Nampa, Idaho, respectively.  The championship meet will be next weekend (Feb. 15-16) at the Jacksons Indoor Complex in Nampa.

Athletes from Alaska Anchorage, Central Washington, Saint Martin's, Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser, Western Oregon and Western Washington will head to Seattle to compete in either the UW Husky Classic Friday and Saturday or the UW Open on Sunday or both.

Northwest Nazarene will conclude its pre-championship meet schedule Friday and Saturday at Nampa competing in the Boise State Team Challenge.  Montana State Billings is idle this weekend.

Crofts Remains No. 1 in 800

Helen Crofts of Simon Fraser maintained her No. 1 ranking in the 800 and the Clan remained No. 1 in the women’s distance medley relay in this week’s TFRRS national rankings.  The Clan women also earned a No. 9 team ranking in the USTFCCCA women’s national team computer rankings.  Alaska Anchorage’s men are ranked 22nd in the team rankings, while the UAA women are ranked 15th. 

Six UAA Athletes in Top 10

Alaska Anchorage athletes are ranked in the Top 10 nationally in six events. On the men’s side, Micah Chelimo ranks fourth in the 3,000 and the Seawolves are also fourth in the distance medley relay.  Joe Day is  10th in the 800. 

On the women’s side, Ruth Keino is second in the 5000, Susan Tanui is third in the 3,000 and the Seawolves also rank third in the distance medley relay. Other athletes ranked in the Top 10 include Crofts and SFU’s Michaela Kane (9th) in the 800, along with SFU’s top-ranked women’s distance medley relay team.

GNAC TOP 10s:  GNAC athletes posted nine all-time GNAC Top 10 performances last week.   In addition to Andrew Curtis of Northwest Nazarene in the men’s 200 and 400, Laura Tesch of Saint Martin's in the women’s high jump and MSUB’s men’s distance medley relay team (See Athlete of the Week notes below), CWU’s Lewis Meyers posted the eighth best men’s high jump in GNAC indoor track and field history (6-6 ¾) and the Wildcats’ Eric Holmstrom had the ninth best shot put (50-10).  CWU’s Becki Duhamel had the sixth best shot put (44-3 ½) and Carly Dranginis had the 10th  best weight throw (50-3 ¼).  Duhamel had the No. 2 all-time mark in the discus (130-8), which is a seldom-contested event.

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS: Eight NCAA qualifying marks were established by GNAC athletes at three different venues last weekend.  In addition to the two by Curtis and the two by MSUB's Tyson Vanderby and his teammates and the marks by Western Oregon's  Matson Hardie and Tesch (See Athlete of the Week notes below), qualifiers also included CWU’s Scott Hunter in the pole vault and Duhamel in the shot.

GNAC RED LION ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Track: Men – Andrew Curtis, Northwest Nazarene (Jr., Tigard, OR) and Tyson Vanderby, MSU Billings (Sr., Manhattan, MT) ... Both athletes earned two provisional national qualifying marks.  Curtis had provisional times of 21.99 in the 200 and 49.20 in the 400 at the Bronco Classic in Nampa.  His 200 time leads the GNAC and ranks fifth all-time in the conference.  His 400 time ranks second this year in the GNAC and sixth all-time.  Vanderby ran a PNQ of 4:13.46 (adjusted for altitude) in the mile at the Mountain State Games at Pocatello and also helped the Yellowjackets post a PNQ of 10:09.38 – the ninth best time in GNAC history – in the distance medley relay.   

Field: Men – Matson Hardie, Western Oregon (Jr., Bend, OR) triple jumped 47-5 ¼ in the Idaho Vandal Indoor, bettering the provisional national standard by 10 ¼ inches.  Only three other athletes in GNAC history have better marks.  Hardie ranks second on the GNAC Top 10 all-time list with a mark of 47-11 ¾ during the 2010 season. Women – Laura Tesch, Saint Martin’s (Sr., Renton, WA) won the high jump at the University of Idaho Vandal Indoor meet beating out a field of all Division I competitors with a leap of 5-6 ½.  That equals the seventh best mark in GNAC indoor history. She broke the SMU school record for the third time this season and moved up to 13th on the NCAA Division II performance list adding ¾ inches to her previous PNQ.
