TIDWELL THROWS A NO-NO: It wasn’t without its challenges, but Western Oregon junior Reilly Tidwell opened the Wolves’ series at Northwest Nazarene on Friday with the second no-hitter in the GNAC this season.

Tidwell went the distance in the 3-0 victory, allowing no hits and five walks while striking out four. It is the 15th no-hitter in Western Oregon softball history and the second in the GNAC this season. Western Washington’s Anna Kasner was the first, throwing a six-inning perfect game against Saint Martin’s on March 12.

Tidwell’s no-hitter is the 28th in GNAC history and the first seven-inning no-hitter since Montana State Billings’ Alyssa Etheridge threw one against Saint Martin’s on March 8, 2019.

Tidwell worked for the no-hitter with the five walks and four hit batters, working with runners on base in every inning. She saw runners advance to third base in both the first and third innings, working out of the jam each time. Tidwell retired the side in order in the fifth inning, her only three-up, three-down inning of the game.

Tidwell finished the NNU series by allowing just one hit in 10 innings of work, returning to the circle for three innings of relief in Saturday’s second game. She ranks fourth in the GNAC with a 1.93 earned run average.

LONG HOMESTAND COMES TO A CLOSE: It was an unprecedented homestand and it may have set Northwest Nazarene up well as it enters the final month of the season.

The Nighthawks opened the season with 20 consecutive home games at Halle Field, a stretch that ended with last weekend’s four-game series with Western Oregon. The home field was indeed friendly confines with the Nighthawks going 17-3, batting .387 and compiling a 2.47 earned run average. The 17-3 mark includes an 11-1 record against GNAC opponents.

The long homestand was made possible, in part, by a late shuffle in the schedule necessitated by Simon Fraser’s inability to participate in the conference season due to the continued closure of the U.S./Canada border due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The homestand could have been 24 games but a scheduled February 19 and 20 series with Pacific Lutheran was canceled due to inclement weather.

The downside of playing such a long homestand for Northwest Nazarene is that they will play much of the rest of the season on the road. Twelve of the team’s final 16 regular-season games will be away from Nampa. The only home series will be April 23 and 24 against Western Washington.

CONFERENCE FOCUSED: As conference teams move into April, the focus will be on conference play. Five of the six weekends of the conference season will take place between now and May 2 as the teams vie for the four spots in the GNAC Softball Championships, which will take place May 6-8 at Western Oregon.

The only remaining non-conference games on the schedule involve Humboldt State, which is making a tour through GNAC Country with the cancellation of the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s season. The Lumberjacks will play at Saint Martin’s on April 6 and 7 and at Central Washington for five games between April 9 and 11.
