The old adage says that the best offense is a good defense. No one told that to Central Washington or Western Oregon.

The two teams rolled to big wins in the conference’s final games in October. Central Washington had its way with a first-year program from Lincoln (Calif.), dispatching the Oaklanders with a record 92-0 win.

Western Oregon, meanwhile, finished with 409 yards of total offense en route to a 42-3 win over Simon Fraser in the Wolves’ final GNAC game of the season.

The Central Washington win was one for the ages. The 92 points set a GNAC single-game record, surpassing the 83 points scored by Azusa Pacific against SFU in 2017, and are the most points scored by an NCAA football team this season.

The Wildcats broke the GNAC single-game record with 13 touchdowns, surpassing the previous record of 11 set on four occasions. They also broke a record with 12 offensive touchdowns, surpassing the previous record of 10 set five times.

Despite all of the scoring, only one individual record was tied. Junior kicker Patrick Hegarty tied the conference record with 10 extra points made. The effort earned Hegarty his fourth GNAC Special Teams Player of the Week award of the season. He is now 40 for 40 on PAT opportunities this year.

Central Washington finished with 435 yards of total offense, led by 128 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries by senior running back Davine Tullis.

Western Oregon also put its rushing game on full display, led by Omari Land. The junior running back was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week after carrying the ball 20 times for 133 yards and a touchdown. Despite depending on the ground game for much of the game, four of WOU’s touchdowns were passing scores.

Junior defensive back Machiah Lee was named the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week after he finished with six tackles with five solo tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.

Central Washington and Western Oregon now turn to non-conference play. The Wildcats will travel to Western New Mexico on Saturday before returning home to close the regular season on November 13 against Simon Fraser.

The Wolves face non-conference opponents for their final two games of the season. They play at Chadron State on Saturday before closing against Lincoln (Calif.) on November 13. Simon Fraser is idle this week.
