PORTLAND, Ore. – Conference champion Western Washington and conference runner-up Simon Fraser are among four teams tied for 15th after the first of three rounds at a deep and competitive NCAA West/South Central Super Regional from the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo, Colorado.
Both programs, along with Chico State and Sonoma State, recorded an 18-hole score of 12-over-par 296. 14th-place UC-Colorado Springs is a stroke ahead at 295 and 19th-place Hawaii Pacific is three strokes behind at 299.
Western Washington senior Devin Andrews had the best individual performance of any GNAC golfer, shooting 1-under-par 70 to position himself just outside the top 10 in a tie for 11th place. Andrews hit seven birdies during his round, including four straight from the eighth through 11th holes.
Simon Fraser’s Bailey Bjornson and WWU’s Jordan Lee, who tied for second at the GNAC Championships, were part of a large group tied for 28th at 1-over-par 72. Bjornson hit three birdies on an even-par front nine, and after a double-bogey on 10, hit 1-under over the final eight holes, hitting par on seven of them. Lee tallied 13 pars in his round, including on the final five holes.
Junior Jordan Bean is tied for 55th place after shooting 3-over-par 74 for Simon Fraser. Saint Martin’s standout senior Tyler Fitchett, who qualified as an individual competitor, also shot a 74. A pair of SFU freshmen, Kyle Mayner and Ryan Hodgins, are tied for 68th at 3-over-par 75.
In his first tournament since setting a GNAC 54-hole record en route to winning the GNAC Championships by 16 strokes, Western Washington senior Aidan Thain shot a 6-over-par 77 and is currently tied for 93rd place.
Liam Adler of Cal State Monterey Bay is the clubhouse leader after 18 holes after carding a 6-under-par 65, a stroke ahead of Ryan Dixon of St. Mary’s (TX) and Michael Jura III of Stanislaus State. Stanislaus State leads the team competition with an 18-hole score of 5-under-par 279, two strokes ahead of St. Mary’s (TX) and three ahead of Colorado Mesa.
The second of three rounds takes place on Friday, with the first pairing teeing off at 7:30 a.m. featuring WWU’s Seth King. The first Simon Fraser golfer will tee off at 8:20 a.m.
