AUSTIN, Texas – Seattle Pacific senior guard Harry Cavell has been one of the Falcons’ team leaders the last two seasons both on the floor and in the classroom.

The efforts were recognized on a national state on Thursday with Cavell’s selection as a Third Team Division II Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Cavell is the eighth GNAC men’s basketball player to be named an Academic All-American. He is the first since Alaska Anchorage’s Travis Thompson was named to the third team in 2015. Cavell is the second Seattle Pacific player named an Academic All-American and joins David Downs, who earned Academic All-American honors in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, student-athletes were nominated based on career statistics rather than statistics from just this season.

Cavell, a graduate student in Seattle Pacific’s data analytics program, owns a 3.84 GPA. He finished the season with career averages of 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He averaged 16.7 points and a GNAC-leading 7.2 rebounds per game this season and became the 11th player in SPU history to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds. Cavell helped the Falcons finish with a 10-3 record in the pandemic-shortened 2021 campaign.

Cavell is the only player named to the Academic All-America Team from the Division II West Region, which is comprised of the GNAC, California Collegiate Athletic Association and the PacWest Conference.

Nominees for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program must be of sophomore eligibility or greater, must be in their second year at the nominating institution, must be a starter or important reserve for their team and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater.
