PORTLAND, Ore. – Just two GNAC teams were in action this week as Northwest Nazarene and Western Washington visited California for a pair of tournaments.

Northwest Nazarene, the lone Division II West Region team competing at the Desert Intercollegiate, turned in a 13th-place finish by carding a 993 (329-327-337). The Nighthawks combined for a 39-over par 327 second round, the team’s highest output during the two-day event. Freshman Drew Lunt paced the squad after tying for 42nd with a 33-over par 249.

Western Washington, on the other hand, finished just nine strokes out of second place at the SoCal Intercollegiate. Led by junior Michael Butler’s tie for ninth place (221, 71-74-76), Western Washington managed to achieve a sixth-place finish and fell just six strokes shy of Cal State East Bay’s third-place standing.

For the first time this season, the GNAC Men’s Golf Player of the Week honor went to a pair of student athletes. Simon Fraser senior Chirs Crisologo and sophomore Scott Kerr were named co-honorees after tying for fifth place at the Lancer Joust (The Battle At Goose Creek) last week with three-round scores of one-over-par 211. The duo led the Clan to a third-place team finish. Crisologo carded a low round of 1-under-par 69 in the second round while Kerr carded his round of 69 in the final round.

Four conference teams travel to Goodyear, Ariz., next week to take part in the Mustang Intercollegiate on April 2. Concordia will be the only GNAC squad heading to Turlock, Calif., for the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational.

CONCORDIA

With this week off, Concordia should be well rested heading into the Harry Stanislaus Invitational on April 2.

In the Cavs’ previous tournament, the Lancer Joust, they posted a 10-over par 290 in the second round to end the event in 14th place.

Senior Nick Huff paced the Cavaliers with a 9-over par 219, which was highlighted by his even-par 70 in the second round. Sophomore Jaxson Daskalos finished the event carding a 223 (75-73-75) while junior Braeden Campbell closed the tournament with a 224 after leading the team with a 1-over par 71 through the opening 18 holes.

Daskalos and Campbell are the only Cavs to play all 18 rounds this season. Playing in just two tournaments this year, junior Isaac Hall leads the team with a 72.2 stroke average while Huff follows with 74.5 strokes per round. Both players also account for Concordia’s two top-10 finishes this year.

MONTANA STATE BILLINGS

THIS WEEK: April 2-3 at Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.

In its most recent tournament, the Yellowjackets came away with a seventh-place finish at the Warrior Invitational on Mar. 13.

Sophomore Garrett Woodin paced MSUB with a tie for 15th place after carding a two-round score of 149. After firing a 5-over par 77 in the opening round, Woodin bounced back to score even-par in the final round.

Sophomore Caleb Stetzner was second on Montana State Billings by shooting a 150 (73-77). He ended the tournament tied for 18th while junior Scott Larson tied for 29th (153, 73-80).

Stetzner is tied for fifth in the GNAC with a 74.1 stroke average. Woodin, freshman Caleb Trost and freshman Riley Kaercher have all played 17 rounds this season.

Montana State Billings returns to action on April 2 when it is one of four GNAC teams to partake at the Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE

Northwest Nazarene came away with a 13th-place finish at the Desert Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

Sophomore Drew Lunt paced the Nighthawks as he tied for 42nd with a 249 (85-79-85). Scoring as an individual, freshman Tyler Joplin matched Lunt’s scorecard after he shaved eight strokes off his second-round mark to score 8-over par in the final round.

Freshaman Andrew Cortez finished a stroke behind Lunt and Joplin while junior Justin Higgins followed suit by shooting a 250 of his own.

Higgins, sophomore Henry Bernard and freshman Isaac Emerson lead the Nighthawks with 22 rounds played this season. Among the three, Bernard paces the pack with 77.3 strokes per round.

The Nighthawks will play their final tournament prior to the GNAC Championships on April 16 at its own NNU Invitational.

SAINT MARTINS
LAST WEEK: Lancer Joust, Tie 18th of 20, 915 (299-302-314).
THIS WEEK: April 2-3 at Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.

Despite shooting a 12-over par 292 in the opening round of the Lancer Joust last week, Saint Martin’s endured a rough finish as it ended in a two-way tie for 18th place.

Senior Andrew Raab carded a 15-over par 225 to finish in a five-way tie for 50th while junior Trevor Frisby ended one stroke behind him. Senior Alex Aguilar closed out the Saints’ top-three scorers with back-to-back rounds of 77 to end the tournament with a 20-over par 230.

Frisby and Raab are the only two Saints to have played in all 21 rounds this season. Frisby paces the Saints with a 74.6 stroke average while Raab is shooting 76.1 strokes per round. Playing in just his second tournament all year, Aguilar maintains a 77.8 stroke average.

Saint Martin’s will be one of four GNAC teams playing in the Mustang Intercollegiate on April 2 in Goodyear, Ariz.

SIMON FRASER

For its second consecutive tournament, Simon Fraser came away with a third-place finish, this time at the Lancer Joust to lead all GNAC teams last week.

Crisologo finished in a tie for fifth after ending 1-over par for the tournament. Crisologo fired a 72 and 69 in the opening two rounds before finishing the event with a 70 for a three-day total of 211.

Sophomore Scott Kerr matched Crisologo as he carded a team-low 69 in the final round to end in a three-way tie for fifth. Kerr shot 1-over par in the opening two rounds to earn his second top-five finish of the year.

Crisologo and Kerr were named the GNAC Men’s Golf Co-Players of the Week after their performances at the joust.

Consistent his entire career, Crisologo achieved his sixth top-five finish this season and leads the GNAC with a 70.6 stroke average. Sophomore Sy Lovan ended the Lancer Joust tied for 47th and is tied for fifth in the GNAC with 74.1 strokes per round.

In the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Division II Rankings, Simon Fraser is among teams receiving votes with 45.

Simon Fraser will play in its final tournament before the GNAC Championships when it travels to Goodyear, Ariz., on April 2 for the Mustang Intercollegiate.

WESTERN WASHINGTON

In last week’s SoCal Intercollegiate, Western Washington finished in sixth place after earning a 906 (195-308-303).

Junior Michael Butler led the Vikings by recording his fifth top-20 finish of the season tying for ninth place at 5-over-par 221. Butler opened the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 before firing a 2-over par 74 in the second round.

Junior Cody Roth turned in a team-low 1-over-par 73 on the final day to finish in a tie for 12th place at 7-over par. He was joined by sophomore Ethan Casto, who used an even-par second round to tie for 12th.

Butler leads the Vikings with a 73.8 stroke average. Butler, Casto and Roth have also played a team-high 21 rounds this season. Through 15 rounds, freshman Brody Bonfilio is fourth in the GNAC with 74.1 strokes per round.

The Vikings continue its spring schedule at the Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz., on Monday.
