Spring Carries On With Conference Trio Ready For Action

PORTLAND, Ore. – In a 20-team field at last week’s Lancer Joust, it was Simon Fraser that impressed as it earned its fifth top-three team finish this season with a 30-over par 870. Paced by senior Nick Huff’s tie for 23rd, Concordia finished the tournament in 14th place while Saint Martin’s garnered a three-day score of 915 (299-302-314).

Simon Fraser senior Chris Crisologo continued his strong season with a tie for fifth. The feat gave Crisologo his sixth top-five finish of the season and he remains the conference leader at 70.6 strokes per round.

Another individual turning heads this spring is Western Washington freshman Brody Bonfilio. On Monday, Bonfilio was named the GNAC Men’s Golf Player of the Week after he tied for first at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational, finishing the 54-hole tournament with a score of 1-under-par 215. He turned in the tournament’s lowest round of 6-under-par 66 in the opening round is the Vikings’ leader with a 73.3 stroke average.

With the end of March approaching, three GNAC teams will be in action next week. Western Washington visits Santee, Calif., to take part in the SoCal Intercollegiate while Northwest Nazarene plays in the Desert Intercollegiate in Indio, Calif. Montana State Billings remains at home as it hosts its annual Yellowjacket Spring Invitational on Monday.

AROUND THE GNAC
CONCORDIA
LAST WEEK: Lancer Joust, 14th of 20, 888 (294-290-304).
THIS WEEK: Idle
• After posting a 10-over par 290 in the second round of the Lancer Joust on Monday, Concordia ended the tournament in 14th place.

• Huff paced the Cavaliers with a 9-over par 219, which was highlighted by his even-par 70 in the second round. Sophomore Jaxson Daskalos finished the event carding a 223 (75-73-75) while junior Braeden Campbell closed the tournament with a 224 after leading the team with a 1-over par 71 through the opening 18 holes.

• Daskalos and Campbell are the only Cavs to play all 18 rounds this season. Playing in just two tournaments this year, junior Isaac Hall leads the team with a 72.2 stroke average while Huff follows with 74.5 strokes per round. Both players also have account for Concordia’s two top-10 finishes this year.

• The Cavaliers return to action in two weeks when they play at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational on April 2 in Turlock, Calif.

MONTANA STATE BILLINGS
LAST WEEK: Warrior Invitational, 6th of 11, 609 (299-310),
THIS WEEK: Mar. 26-27 at Yellowjacket Spring Invitational in Billings, Mont.
• The Yellowjackets came away with a seventh-place finish at the Warrior Invitational last week.

• Sophomore Garrett Woodin paced MSUB with a tie for 15th place after carding a two-round score of 149. After firing a 5-over par 77 in the opening round, Woodin bounced back to score even-par in the final round.

• Sophomore Caleb Stetzner was second on Montana State Billings by shooting a 150 (73-77). He ended the tournament tied for 18th while junior Scott Larson tied for 29th (153, 73-80).

• Stetzner is sixth in the GNAC with a 74.1 stroke average. Woodin, freshman Caleb Trost and freshman Riley Kaercher have all played 17 rounds this season.

• Montana State Billings return to action on Mar. 26 when it takes to its home course for the Yellowjacket Spring Invitational.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE
LAST WEEK: Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational, 8th of 10, 946 (306-312-328).
THIS WEEK: Mar. 26-27 at Desert Intercollegiate in Indio, Calif.
• Last week, Northwest Nazarene was among four GNAC teams participating in the NDNU Argonaut Invitational, finishing in eighth place.

• For the second straight tournament, sophomore Henry Bernard was the Nighthawks’ leading finisher after he ended in a three-way tie for 16th place. After carding a 7-over par 79 in the second round, Bernard was able to shave three points off his final scorecard to finish 11-over for the tournament.

• Freshman Isaac Emerson tied for 34th (238, 77-77-84) while sophomore Drew Lunt finished a stroke behind him for a 36th place finish.

• Bernard, Emerson and junior Justin Higgins lead the Nighthawks in rounds played with 19 this season. Among the three, Bernard paces the pack with 76.2 strokes per round.

• Northwest Nazarene returns to action on Mar. 26 when it takes Indio, Calif., for the Desert Intercollegiate.

SAINT MARTINS
LAST WEEK: Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational, 6th of 10, 927 (308-301-318). Lancer Joust, T18th of 20, 915 (299-302-314).
THIS WEEK: Idle

• Despite shooting a 12-over par 292 in the opening round of the Lancer Joust earlier this week, Saint Martin’s endured a rough finish as it ended in a two-way tie for 18th place.

• Senior Andrew Raab carded a 15-over par 225 to finish in a five-way tie for 50th while junior Trevor Frisby ended one stroke behind him. Senior Alex Aguilar closed out the Saints’ top-three scorers with back-to-back rounds of 77 to end the tournament with a 20-over par 230.

• Frisby and Raab are the only two Saints to have played in all 21 rounds this season. Frisby paces the Saints with a 74.6 stroke average while Raab is shooting 76.1 strokes per round. Playing in just his second tournament all year, Aguilar maintains a 77.8 stroke average.

• Saint Martin’s will be one of four GNAC teams playing in the Mustang Intercollegiate on April 2 in Goodyear, Ariz.

SIMON FRASER

• For the second consecutive week, Simon Fraser came away with a third-place finish, this time at the Lancer Joust to lead all GNAC teams.

• Crisologo finished in a tie for fifth after ending 1-over par for the tournament. Crisologo fired a 72 and 69 in the opening two rounds before finishing the event with a 70 for a three-day total of 211.

• Sophomore Scott Kerr matched Crisologo as he carded a team-low 69 in the final round to end in a three-way tie for fifth. Kerr shot 1-over par in the opening two rounds to earn his second top-five finish of the year.

• Consistent his entire career, Crisologo achieved his sixth top-five finish this season and leads the GNAC with a 70.6 stroke average. Sophomore Sy Lovan ended the Lancer Joust tied for 47th and is fifth in the GNAC with 74.1 strokes per round.

• In the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Division II Rankings, Simon Fraser is among teams receiving votes with 45.

• Simon Fraser will play in its final tournament before the GNAC Championships when it travels to Goodyear, Ariz., on April 2 for the Mustang Intercollegiate.

WESTERN WASHINGTON
LAST WEEK: Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational, T4th of 10, 906 (295-308-303).
THIS WEEK: March 26-27 at Southern California Intercollegiate in Santee, Calif.
• In last week’s Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational, Western Washington finished in a fourth-place tie with Dominican after earning a 906 (195-308-303).

• Bonfilio was named the GNAC Men’s Golf Player of the Week after he tied for first by shooting a 1-under par (215, 66-74-75). Bonfilio carded a tournament-low of 66 in the opening round before ending the day with a second-round 74.

• Junior Michael Butler was the second-highest Vikings’ finisher after tying for 11th. Butler fired an 8-over par 224 while senior Adam Barker placed 23rd after shaving four strokes off his second-round total to end 17-over par.

• Bonfilio leads the Vikings with a 73.3 stroke average. Butler, sophomore Ethan Casto and junior Cody Roth have played a team-high 18 rounds this season.

• After a week off, Western Washington will resume play at the SoCal Intercollegiate in Santee, Calif., on March 26.

THIS WEEK’S GNAC MEN’S GOLF PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Brody Bonfilio (Western Washington, Fr., Boise, Idaho – Bishop Kelly): Bonfilio tied for first at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational, finishing the 54-hole tournament with a score of 1-under-par 215. He eventually fell to Cal State San Bernardino’s Cody Hall in a one-hole playoff. He turned in the tournament’s lowest round of 6-under-par 66 in the opening round. Bonfilio led the Vikings to a tie for fourth place in the team standings.
