CWU’s Leid Earns All-America Honors

PORTLAND, Ore. – Capping off the 2024 baseball season, Central Washington’s Ben Leid was named an honorable mention All-American.

The 2024 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Leid earned honorable mention accolades from both the Division II Conference Commissioners Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. Leid was also a consensus first-team all-region selection by the D2CCA, NCBWA and the American Baseball Coaches Association, leading a cast of 12 total players from the GNAC to take home all-region recognition for the 2024 campaign.

Leid led the GNAC in all three slash line categories at .425/.490/.680, hitting nine home runs and driving in 46 to lead the Wildcats. Leid had a GNAC-high 77 hits including 13 doubles and three triples, and he crossed the plate 41 times. Leid also tied for the GNAC lead in total bases with 123, while starting 47 games and posting an OPS of 1.170 in his junior season.

Earning all-region recognition across all three voting organizations was Saint Martin’s pitcher Colin Driscoll, who was a first-team ABCA and D2CCA and a second-team NCBWA selection. Driscoll led the GNAC with a 3.17 ERA and in opponents batting average at .219, while striking out 58 hitters in 71 innings pitched.

Northwest Nazarene’s contingency of all-region picks was led by NCBWA West Region Coach of the Year Joe Schaefer, who piloted the Nighthawks to a sweep of the GNAC regular-season and tournament titles with an overall record of 36-15-1. Closer Wade Duncan earned NCBWA first-team all-region after leading the GNAC with nine saves and posting a 2.41 ERA across 21 appearances on the season. Bryan Rojas was a D2CCA first-team pick, after posting a 2.93 ERA across 30 2/3 innings pitched in seven appearances. GNAC co-Pitcher of the Year Kyle Etheridge earned second-team all-region from all three organizations, after posting a 4.03 ERA across 13 starts with 60 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings pitched. Trevor Tishenkel, who led the Nighthawks in hitting a .337 and with 11 home runs and 46 RBIs, was a second-team pick by both the NCBWA and the D2CCA. Shortstop Cole Calnon also garnered all-region recognition as an NCBWA honorable mention, after batting .275 with a pair of long balls and 50 games started.

Leid’s teammate Austin Ohland garnered second-team all-region recognition from both the ABCA and the NCBWA. Ohland hit .353 this spring with eight home runs and 43 RBIs. Ohland started 48 of 49 games, and reached base at a clip of .430.

Montana State Billings had a trio of all-region selections in Jack Nehler, Kaden Kirshenbaum and Payton Flynn. Kirshenbaum earned first-team from the NCBWA and second-team from the ABCA, after hitting .299 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs. Nehler received second-team recognition from all three voting bodies, after leading the Yellowjackets with a .397 batting average and 14 doubles, and hitting five home runs with 30 RBIs. Flynn garnered second-team NCBWA recognition, after hitting .330 with a team-high 14 home runs and 48 RBIs during his senior season.

Western Oregon was represented by honorable mention all-region selection AJ Cortese, who was a first-team all-GNAC selection this spring. Cortese hit .295 with a team-leading 17 doubles, while starting 42 games for the Wolves.
