Part of a regular series.

Throughout the year, GNACsports.com uses this space to profile conference student-athletes who are members of their respective institutions’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In addition to providing feedback on the student-athlete experience, conference and institutional SAAC members also offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Name: Jordan Thorsen
Sport: Men's Soccer
Institution: Simon Fraser
Year: Junior
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Kelowna, British Columbia

Why did you choose to attend SFU?: When I was nine years old I attended a Simon Fraser soccer camp hosted by its alumni, one of whom would end up being my coach when I joined the program in 2020. From then on I knew that Simon Fraser was the school I wanted to attend. It has been the perfect place for me to further myself as both a student and athlete, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow here.

What is your favorite class you have taken in college and why?: Introduction to Theories of Personality has been my favorite class so far. This course made me think more than any other I have taken thus far and I was excited to learn more than what was required to succeed in the course. Every lecture and reading was incredibly interesting and I found myself eager to apply what I had learned to my own experiences in life and sport even when I had closed my books for the day!

How many years were you involved in SAAC?: Two years.

What made you want to be involved in SAAC?: Being a successful student-athlete is no easy task and I loved the idea of contributing to a committee that sought to improve our experience by working to provide us with more resources and opportunities to be a part of something greater!

What is your most memorable SAAC activity to date?: Simon Fraser SAAC recently hosted a Special Olympics Basketball match at our home court! This was such a rewarding event to be a part of and I couldn't help but feel caught up in a contagious sense of joy that filled the gym that day. It was a great example of the power of sport to bring people together and create lasting memories!

How do you feel participating in SAAC will help you in life after you graduate?: At SAAC I have the privilege of collaborating with so many talented athletes, brilliant students and wonderful people. While my time in SAAC has taught me a great deal, I feel as though my ability to work in a team setting with such competent individuals will be one of the most important skills that I will take with me as a graduate.

What is the most important thing you've learned from balancing the demands of athletics and academics?: Time is precious! If you want to achieve both your athletic and academic goals, you have to be effective with your time and spend every minute carefully.

What is the biggest obstacle you have overcome during your collegiate career?: The mental and physical burdens placed upon student-athletes can feel daunting at times so finding the time to unwind and focus on my own physical and mental health has often been challenging.

What is the best advice you would give to an incoming freshman?: Do more than you think is necessary, at least to begin with. Getting into the swing of things can be tough as the academic load is probably far greater than what you're used to. It is so much easier to dial things back than it is to play catch-up.

If you could spend the day with one person (past or present), who would it be (and why)?: My Grandpa! Though he passed before I was born, I would like to think he would be proud of who I have become. I've been told that he was a generous, hardworking man and quite an impressive athlete so I would love the chance to get lost in conversation about life and sports.

Favorite Sports Team: Bayern Munich.

Favorite Athlete: Peter Schmeichel.

What is one thing that people don't know about you?: I love a good ice bath.
