ARCATA, Calif. - As announced by Humboldt State University Interim Director of Athletics Jill Willson, Matt Weise has been named the Head Rowing Coach at Humboldt State effective July 1, 2020. Weise will take over for Pat Hyland who will continue his role as interim rowing coach through this spring season.

"Robin Meiggs, Pat Hyland, Ashley Donnell and Julia Smith have created a strong team culture based around athletic and academic performance," said Weise. "I look forward to working with the existing staff and building championship teams."

Weise comes to Humboldt State from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, where he was the head women's rowing coach from 2004 to 2019. He led the Spartans to three Big Ten team titles and 11 Big Ten individual titles. The Spartans had seven NCAA appearances with a best finish of sixth place at the NCAA Division I Championships.

"The athletic department is comprised of very capable individuals that want to help all of the student-athletes succeed at Humboldt," added Weise.

Six of his athletes at Michigan State were members of the United States or Canadian National Team members. One was an Olympic gold medalist. He also coached 79 National Scholar-Athletes and 40 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars (grade point average above 3.7). Weise is a Three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and two-time Regional Coach of the Year.

Prior to being the head rowing coach at Michigan State, Weise was the assistant rowing coach at his alma mater from 1997 to 2004. In 2002, Weise coached the line-up that won Michigan State's first Big Ten individual title.

From 2002 to 2003, Weise was the Sports Camp Director at Michigan State University. Prior to that, he was the Head Men's and Women's Rowing Club Rowing Coach at his alma mater. Weise wrote the proposal that elevated the women's club rowing team to varsity status in the athletic department.

"I had the pleasure of meeting some faculty on my visit and I look forward to meeting more as I spend time at Humboldt," noted Weise. "There are shared values at the university and the surrounding community for supporting students in ways that allow them to grow. I am looking forward to all of the challenges that Humboldt will have for me. New school, new state, new rowing venue, new team, new coaching staff and much more. I can't wait to get started!"

Weise received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics in 1992 from Michigan State. In 1997, Weise received his Master of Science degree in physical education and exercise science with a specialization in biomechanics.
