PORTLAND, Ore. - Fourteen Great Northwest Athletic Conference athletes, including Western Oregon quarterback Cody VonAppen, have earned Red Lion Player of the Week honors for their performances during the period of Oct. 8-14, 2012. They include:
Football
Offense - Cody VonAppen, Western Oregon (QB, 5-10, 200, Sr., Kailua, HI) and Demetrius Sumler, Central Washington (RB, 5-10, 220, Sr., San Diego, CA – Colorado) are the Red Lion Offensive Co-Players of the Week. VonAppen completed 16 of 27 passes for 424 yards and four touchdowns as the Wolves used a 21-point first quarter and a 28-point fourth quarter to cruise to a 66-20 win over Dixie State. VonAppen had one of the most efficient games in GNAC history by a quarterback averaging a GNAC-record 26.5 yards per completion The previous record for yards per completion was 25.5 by WOU’s Josh Riddle (13-332) against CWU in 2008. Sumler rushed for 226 yards and tied a GNAC record with five rushing touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 51-10 Homecoming win before 5,120 fans at Tomlinson Stadium. Sumler scored on runs of one and 47 yards in the first quarter, 27 in the second quarter, eight in the third quarter and 37 in the fourth quarter moving into third place in the nation in scoring with 84 points. He also caught three passes for four yards
Defense - Colton Russi, Humboldt State (LB, 6-2, 240, Jr., Meadow Vista, CA) who was coming back from a leg injury that kept him out of the lineup for three games, made several big hits and led the Jacks in tackles with nine in a 24-20 win over Azusa Pacific in earning Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Special Teams - Chris Campbell, Humboldt State (P, 5-10, 170, So, Granite Bay, CA) averaged 40.8 yards on eight punts, including a long of 51 yards in the Lumberjacks’ 24-20 win over Azusa Pacific. Campbell placed two punts inside the 20-yard line and didn't have a touchback to claim the Red Lion Special Teams Player of the Week award.
Honorable Mention - Nick Ricciardulli, Humboldt State; Michael Akins, Western Oregon; Matt Burke, Central Washington.
Volleyball
Offense – Catie Fry, Central Washington (S, 6-0, Fr., Tacoma, WA – Mt. Si) averaged 11.6 assists leading the Wildcats to a pair of 3-0 win against Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s. Fry, the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week award winner, also had a team-high five service aces, 13 digs and four blocks as the Wildcats ran their win streak to nine matches finishing the first half of the conference season in a tie for first-place with Western Washington.
Defense – Kimya Jafroudi, Alaska Anchorage (S, 5-7, Sr., Huntington Beach, CA) led the Seawolves both offensively and defensively to a pair of road wins at Seattle Pacific and Montana State Billings. Jafroudi, the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week award winner, had 22 digs and four blocks on defense. Offensively, she earned 82 assists and also had three service aces.
Honorable Mention - Erin Compton, MSU Billings; Teilissa Tua, Saint Martin’s; Marcy Hjellum, Central Washington; Nikki Lowell, Seattle Pacific; Michelle Terpstra, Northwest Nazarene.
Men’s Soccer
Offense – Ryan Dhillon, Simon Fraser (F, 5-10, Fr., North Delta, BC) scored two goals and also earned an assist as the Clan, which came into the games ranked first nationally in scoring, outscored Mary and Sioux Falls by a combined margin of 11-0. The five-point performance earned Dhillon the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week award.
Defense — Jon Pearman, Seattle Pacific (D, 6-2, 185, Sr., Glendale, AZ) anchored a defense that did not surrender a goal in two games, covering 200 scoreless minutes. The Falcons limited Montana State Billings to 10 shots in a 2-0 win on Thursday in Seattle. On Saturday Pearman, the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week, helped SPU limited Northwest Nazarene to seven shots, just two of them on goal, in a scoreless, double-overtime draw.
Honorable Mention - Thomas Chameraud, MSU Billings; Blaine Carver, Seattle Pacific; Chris Voth, Northwest Nazarene; Quante Abbott Hill Smith, Simon Fraser; Alfredo Ontiveros, Northwest Nazarene; Andrew Weishaar, Western Washington; Keegan Rogers, Western Washington.
Women’s Soccer
Offense – Kristin Maris, Western Washington (F, 5-9, Jr. Issaquah, WA) scored the game-winning goal as the Vikings extended their win streak to seven, all by shutouts, and snapped Western Oregon’s win streak at four with a 2-0 victory. Maris, the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week, opened the scoring in the 56th minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the year and her third game-winner, taking a deflected pass from Catherine Miles with her back to the goal, turning and firing a shot from 28 yards that hit the crossbar and went in. Maris also played a key role in Thursday’s 1-0 win against Saint Martin’s.
Defense – Emma Holm, Seattle Pacific (M, 5-4, Fr., Kirkland, WA – Lake Washington) led the Falcons, who are unbeaten in their last eight games (6-0-2) to two victories, a 4-1 win against Northwest Nazarene and a 3-0 shutout of MSU Billings to earn Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week honors. "Emma was incredible this week,” SPU coach Chuck Sekyra said.. “I thought that she was one of the top three players on the field in both games against Nazarene and Bilings. She was steady and made some game-changing plays."
Honorable Mention – Heidi Greenback, MSU Billings; Whitney Siler, MSU Billings; Carson McKole, Central Washington; Jamie Arthurs, Western Washington.
Cross Country
Men - Clint Choquette, MSU Billings (Sr., Butte, MT) broke the men’s school record and finished fourth in the 22nd annual Yellowjacket Invitational with a time of 25:11, besting Brian Potter's time of 25:21 set last year, to earn Red Lion Male Athlete of the Week honors.
Women - Whitney Mickelsen, MSU Billings (Sr., Aurora, UT) broke her own Yellowjacket Invite school record that she set last season crossing the finish line in third place Saturday with a time of 18:04.
Golf
Men - Jack Kelly, Western Washington (Fr,, Snoqualmie, WA – Mount Si), playing in just his second collegiate tournament, had rounds of 70, 75 and 75 to finish 15th in the Chico State Wildcat Classic and earn GNAC Red Lion Golf of the Week honors. Kelly, who is averaging 73.3 in his two tournaments, led the Vikings to a third-place team finish in the 16-team invitational.
Women - Anna Bourland, Western Washington (So., Bainbridge, WA) was the only GNAC golfer to finish in the Top 15 Monday and Tuesday in the Western Washington Invitational at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club earning her GNAC Red Lion Golfer of the Week honors for Oct. 8-14. Bourland had a second-round score of 71 – the best round of the tournament – to finish tied for eighth with a 153 total as she led the Vikings to a seventh-place finish.
