Humboldt State Rolls to 35-7 Victory Over SFU

Running back Lyndon Rowells rushed for 136 yards and quarterback Mike Proulx contributed to four touchdowns as Humboldt State stayed unbeaten (3-0, 2-0) defeating Simon Fraser 35-7 at Terry Fox Field in Burnaby Saturday.

Meanwhile, Western Oregon (3-1, 3-0) crushed Dixie State 56-0 at Hansen Stadium in St. George, Utah.

Rowells had 171 all-purpose yards, including 136 on 27 rushes and 35 on five catches. He scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter and also had a long run of 44 on the day.

Proulx completed 25 of 44 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns and also netted 13 yards on four carries, including a seven-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for the only score after intermission.

HSU led 28-7 at halftime, scoring in the first quarter on a three-yard pass from Proulx to Chris Bolt following a 78-yard kick return by JJ Latu to start the game and in the second quarter on passes of three and 14 yards to Bolt and Victor Spencer and on Rowell's TD run.

Simon Fraser's only score also came in the second quarter as Bo Palmer scored from 68 yards. On the day, Palmer had 148 yards on 23 rushes.

HSU finished the contest with 474 yards in total offense, including exactly 200 rushing. The Clan netted 248 yards, 192 of it rushing.

Jona Faraimo led Humboldt defensively with 11 tackles, two of them for losses of five yards. He also forced a fumble.

Kevin Cooper and Jordan McGowan had interceptions and Chris Peterson and Brendan Faubion recovered fumbles for the Lumberjacks.

Kyle Miller and Derek Jones had interceptions for the Clan. Travis Hayes had 11 tackles for SFU.

Western Oregon 56, Dixie State 0

Quarterback Evan Mozzochi completed 12 of 15 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns and Western Oregon held Dixie State (1-3, 1-1) to 180 yards in offense.

The Wolves put this one away early scoring six first-half touchdowns including a 60-yard touchdown pass from Mozzochi to Trevor Gates on the first play from scrimmage of the game.

Mozzochi later scored on a one-yard run and tossed two six-pointers to Josh McFarland of seven and 23 yards. Both of those plays finished off 80-yard drives of six and five plays.

WOU also scored in the first half on a 37-yard interception return by Raymond Williams and on a one-yard run by Cody VanAppen.

In the second half, Gates caught a 10-yard third-quarter touchdown pass from Mozzochi and Adryan Allen ran 69 yards for a score in the final period.

Defensive back Bryce Peila, who had 103 yards including 68 on two punt returns, set up two of WOU's first-half touchdowns.

He returned a punt 38 yards to the Red Storm 16 prior to Mozzochi's first-quarter TD run. In the second quarter, he returned an interception 35 yards to the one-yard line to set up VonAppen's score.

In addition to Peila and Williams, the Wolves also got an interception from Levi Smith and had 13 tackles for losses including seven sacks.

Linebacker Scotland Foss had 3 1/2 tackles for losses of 16 yards and Gavin Drake had two for losses of 11 yards.
