Sheldon, Cavs Hold Slight Edge In Women's Championships

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Western Washington’s Lacy Sheldon leads a tight-knit group in the top-six while Concordia maintains a slight edge on the field after the first round of the GNAC Women’s Golf Championships, held Monday at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course.

Sheldon used a solid effort on the first nine holes to work her way into the individual lead with a 2-over-par 73. She hit par on the first hole, a par-5 499-yard track, then proceeded to card birdies on the third and fourth holes.

The junior transfer is up by one stroke on Concordia’s Shantel Antonio, who came into the clubhouse with a 3-over-par 74. She matched Sheldon with a par on the No. 1 hole and proceeded to maintain par on all but three holes in the round. Her 15 holes at par led all players in the field.

Antonio leads four Concordia players in the top-10 of the individual leaderboard to take the first round lead with a score of 27-over-par 311. Western Washington is four strokes back at 31-over-par 315 while Simon Fraser is just eight strokes off the pace at 35-over-par 319.

The Cavaliers’ Kaley Saludares and Simon Fraser’s Jaya Rampuri are tied for third place with scores of 6-over-par 77 while the Clan’s Belinda Lin and Kylie Jack and the Vikings’ Hannah Drake are in a three-way tie for fifth at 8-over-par 79.

Concordia’s Cammie Decker and Staesha Flock and Western Washington’s Katelann Soth are all tied for eighth place at 9-over-par 80. Soth had four birdies on the day to lead all players.

Rounding out the team standings is Northwest Nazarene at 333, Montana State Billings at 334 and Saint Martin’s at 343.

The final round of the GNAC Women’s Golf Championships commences on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
