PORTLAND, Ore. – Three of the top performers in the GNAC during the abbreviated men’s basketball season are being recognized for academic and athletic achievement as Seattle Pacific senior Harry Cavell, Northwest Nazarene senior Sam Roth and Nighthawk’s sophomore George Reidy have been named to the CoSIDA Division II Academic All-District 8 Men’s Basketball Team.

The selection is the first for all three players as the GNAC dominated positions on the five-team squad, which is comprised of student-athletes from the GNAC, California Collegiate Athletic Association and PacWest Conference. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, student-athletes were nominated based on career statistics rather than statistics from just this season.

Cavell, a graduate student in Seattle Pacific’s data analytics program, owns a 3.84 GPA. He finished the season with career averages of 11.5 and 5.2 rebounds points per game. He averaged 16.7 points and a GNAC-leading 7.2 rebounds per game this season and became the 11th player in SPU history to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds. Cavell helped the Falcons finish with a 10-3 record in the pandemic-shortened 2021 campaign.

Roth and Reidy helped Northwest Nazarene finish with a 13-5 record and played key roles in the Nighthawks’ run to the NCAA Division II West Regional championship game.

Roth, who has a 3.81 GPA as an engineering major, finished the season with career averages of 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. In 2021, Roth average 6.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while starting all 18 games.

Reidy, who has a 3.86 GPA as a recreation & sport management major, finished the season with career averages of 11.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He has started all but one possible game in his NNU career. Reidy finished averaging 12.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game during the 2021 season.

With their selections, Cavell, Roth and Reidy are now eligible for selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team, which will be announced later this month. The GNAC trio was joined on the Academic All-District 8 team by Blake Seits of Cal State San Marcos and Alex Wright of Biola.

Nominees for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program must be of sophomore eligibility or greater, must be in their second year at the nominating institution, must be a starter or important reserve for their team and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater.
