NATIONAL HONORS FOR JOHNSON: The leading player in Alaska Anchorage’s sweep of two nationally-ranked GNAC programs has been recognized at the national level. Alaska Anchorage junior outside hitter Chrisalyn Johnson was named both the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week and the AVCA/Sport Imports Division II Player of the Week after she finished with 40 kills in a pair of five-set victories over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.

In addition to the 40 kills, Johnson average four kills per set and three aces and also had a .248 hitting percentage. In Thursday’s win over the Wildcats, she pounded career-high and then-UAA season-high 24 kills, along with 15 digs, four block assists and an ace. Clinging to a 13-11 lead in the fifth set, Johnson ripped consecutive kills to end the match.

In Saturday’s victory over previously one-loss NNU, she tallied 16 kills on .256 hitting – including match point again – and equaled her season high with 18 digs.

Johnson becomes just the second Seawolf ever to earn the AVCA’s top national weekly award for NCAA Division II, following former All-American Rhea Cardwell, who won the honor on Nov. 18, 2008.

VIKINGS CONTINUE TO ROLL: Western Washington continues to dominate GNAC play. The Vikings enter the week on a 12-match win streak. The team’s last loss came on Sept. 16, a four-set defeat at Northwest Nazarene. The win streak has allowed the Vikings to claim first place in the GNAC standings at 13-1, a match ahead of Northwest Nazarene.

Over the last three weeks, the Vikings have been even more dominant with their last six matches coming in three-set sweeps. In fact, 10 of the 12 matches in the win streak have been in three sets. In the 12 matches, Western Washington is averaging 14.3 kills and 20.4 digs per set and has amassed a .262 hitting percentage while holding opponents to a .112 hitting percentage and an average of 11.3 kills per set.

Western Washington will be well tested over the final three weeks. The Vikings host Alaska Anchorage on Thursday and will host Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene on the final weekend of the regular season.

GNAC FLAVOR IN WEST REGION POLL: The GNAC is well represented in the first NCAA West Region Rankings of the season, released on Wednesday. Northwest Nazarene is ranked No. 2, followed by Western Washington at No. 3, Central Washington at No. 6 and Alaska Anchorage at No. 8.
