BILLINGS, Mont. – After serving three seasons as assistant coach, Stephen Cavallo has been named the head women’s soccer coach at Montana State University Billings announced the athletic department Friday.

Cavallo has been serving as the team’s interim head coach since former coach Wojtek Krakowiak resigned at the end of the season in October.

“We are very pleased that Stephen Cavallo has accepted our offer to serve as our next head women’s soccer coach,” said Yellowjacket athletic director Krista Montague. “During his three-plus years at MSUB, Stephen’s outstanding character and personality have shone through and he has had a tremendous impact on our women’s soccer student-athletes. We couldn’t be more confident in his ability to lead this program and continue its recent history of success within the GNAC.”

Cavallo was a part of MSUB’s teams in 2014 and 2015 that advanced to the GNAC Championships tournament, and MSUB holds a cumulative 23-17-6 record (.565) during his time as assistant coach. The Yellowjackets are coming off of a 4-10-3 record last fall, and finished in sixth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a league mark of 4-6-2. Cavallo earned his Class C Licensure from the United States Soccer Federation in 2015.

“It is an absolute blessing and honor to be named as the next head coach of the MSU Billings women’s soccer program,” said Cavallo, a native of Charlotte, N.C. “I would like to thank Dr. Nook, Krista Montague, and every member of the MSUB family for giving me this opportunity to lead the program. I would also like to thank the MSUB women’s soccer student-athletes, who have shown incredible support to me. It is a privilege to work with them, and a strong foundation is already in place. I am extremely excited to get started with the team as we build towards future success in an extremely competitive conference.”

Prior to his time at MSUB, Cavallo served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Emory & Henry College, and was the goalkeeper coach for the women’s team at Belmont Abbey College. His coaching career began at Allegany High School (Md.), where he led the team to an undefeated regular season in 2012 and was named the Pepsi-Cola High School Soccer Coach of the Year.

Cavallo played for two seasons at Warren Wilson College before transferring to Frostburg State University, where he was a two-year starter in goal. He graduated from Frostburg in 2012, and holds a bachelor’s degree in geography. He attended East Lincoln High School in Denver, N.C.
