2007 GAME STORIES

Seattle Pacific Shutout In National Semis (11/29/07)

Franklin Pierce dealt Seattle Pacific its only loss of the season, beating the Falcons 2-0 in the semifinal round of the NCAA DII National Championships Thursday at Orange Beach, Ala.

The Ravens (18-1-5) pushed their shutout streak to seven consecutive games, holding SPU scoreless for the first time all year and ending the Falcons perfect season a game short of the title match.

Seattle Pacific (23-1) started quickly but goalkeeper Brittany Easter made a sprawling save on a 15-yard strike by Shannon Oakes in the second minute.

Taryn Welker then gave Franklin Pierce a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute taking a feed from Gabriela Demoner and knocking home her first goal of the season.

SPU unleashed seven shots in the first half, four by Oakes alone, but Ester made four saves. Franklin Pierce then doubled its lead in the 59th minute as Mackenzie Bulych headed home Kelly Weygund's cross for her sixth goal of the season.

It was just the third time this season Seattle Pacific conceded two goals, the last coming against Western Oregon on Sept. 22.

Seattle Pacific almost got on the scoreboard in the 72nd minute, but Jocelyn Charette's shot caromed off the crossbar.

SPU outshot the Ravens 18-7 overall, but  Ester had eight saves in recording the shutout. Jesslyn Rahm had four saves for the Falcons.

Seattle Pacific Advances To National Semis (11/17/07)

Jocelyn Charette scored twice in the opening four minutes to launch unbeaten Seattle Pacific to a 4-0 win over Incarnate Word in an NCAA Division II Quarterfinal match Saturday afternoon at Interbay Stadium.

The undefeated and second-ranked Falcons (23-0) will next play in the semifinal round, Thursday, Nov. 29 in Orange Beach, Ala. The Cardinals, ranked fourth, finished their campaign with an 18-3-2 record.

Incarnate Word opened play with a run downfield that resulted in a hard shot at SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm. However, that initial attempt would be the closest the Cardinals got.

Charette answered the visitor's opening drive when she hit the far right corner at 2:52. Following a throw-in, Sarah Martinez flicked the ball out of a scramble in the box to Janae Godoy stationed in the center on the six.

Godoy controlled Martinez' flick with her thigh and pushed it toward Charette for what eventually proved to be the game-winner.

With the visitors still reeling from the score, Charette struck again less than a minute later. She took a touch on a Shannon Oakes feed from the middle third, and sent a low, skidding ball to the left post from 25 yards at 3:48.

Charette kept Incarnate Word keeper Ashton Caffrey quite busy. The sophomore forward hit the frame with 23 minutes remaining, and accounted for eight of the Falcons' 22 shots.

Having played her first season at Tampa, Charette will be making her second consecutive appearance at the Final Four. Overall, she has eight postseason goals in seven career postseason matches.

The final two goals also came within a short span. Amanda Johnson made it 3-0 at 84:15, when teammate Karen Hosler cut a ball back from the left edge of the goal box.

Johnson received the ball a dozen yards out in front of the goalmouth and hooked a shot to the upper right corner. Ali Winje added more insurance at 89:53 off Johnson's corner kick.

SPU outshot Incarnate Word 22-3 and has now outshot its three playoff opponents 56-8 (30-3 in shots on goal) while outscoring them 9-0. Jesslyn Rahm had two saves, her first two of the playoffs, as SPU recorded its 15th team shutout of the season.

Seattle Pacific Wins Far West Title (11/15/07)

Shannon Oakes and Janae Godoy each scored goals in the decisive second half to lift Seattle Pacific to a 2-0 win over Cal State L.A. in the NCAA Division II Far West Region Championship game Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The undefeated and nationally second-ranked Falcons (22-0) advance to host the national quarterfinal Saturday versus No. 4 Incarnate Word, which won 1-0 earlier in the day against Central Oklahoma . The Golden Eagles finished their season 13-6-2.

Oakes broke a scoreless deadlock in the 53rd minute when she took a drop-feed from Sarah Martinez and blasted a low shot to the right corner from 16 yards.

Jessica Gerstmann began the sequence when she drove a hard cross from the right corner toward the center of the box. Martinez controlled the ball on the penalty spot and laid it back to Oakes for what proved to be the game-winner.

Though the Falcons had dictated play for most of the first half, the focus coming out of the locker room following intermission was to work on exposing Cal State L.A. by getting the backs forward into the attack, according to SPU Coach Chuck Sekyra.

“The best defense is a good offense,” said defender Gerstmann who was credited with assists on both goals. “I just try to get the ball toward the back post and see what happens.”

In the 74th minute, Godoy benefited from Gerstmann's second trip down the right sideline when she positioned herself on the six-yard line and followed up on Gerstmann's miss off the crossbar. CSULA keeper Coca Reyna couldn't get a hand on the ball and Godoy's header sealed the game.

Reyna had a half-dozen saves including a diving push-save on a Martinez shot with 27 minutes left. Reyna also turned away an Oakes scoring bid nine minutes into the opening stanza.

Seattle Pacific outshot CSLA 16-3 and took all five of the game's corner kicks. Jesslyn Rahm had one save in recording her 11th shutout. It was SPU's 14th shutout in 22 starts.

Seattle Loses In Shootout to Cal State L.A. (11/11/07)

Cal State L.A. outscored Seattle 4-2 in the shootout after the teams had battled to a scoreless deadlock Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Far West Division II soccer playoffs.

It was the second straight shootout win for the Golden Eagles who won a shootout 3-1 on Friday after playing Chico State to a 0-0 draw.

CSLA (13-5-4) now advances to the Far West Region finals against Seattle Pacific (21-0-0) Thursday at Interbay Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

After each team had missed their first opportunities and converted in the next two rounds, CSLA gained the advantage in the fourth round, then clinched the victory in the final round on a shot by Liz Franco.

Seattle (17-3-1) dominated regulation outshooting the Golden Eagles 13-7 before taking all five of the shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods. CSLA did not have a shot on goal, while CSLA's Reyna Coca made five saves against the Redhawks.

SPU Advances To Regional Title Game (11/10/07)

Meredith Teague garnered an assist on every goal as Seattle Pacific beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 in an NCAA Division II second round women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Interbay Stadium.

The undefeated and nationally second-ranked Falcons (21-0) will host the winner of Sunday's contest between No. 11 Seattle University and Cal State L.A. at Interbay in the Far West Regional title game next Thursday. The Toros finished 14-4-4.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had gone to overtime in a first round 2-1 decision over UC San Diego two days prior, and Seattle Pacific took advantage of the Toros' weary legs right away when Sarah Martinez used a burst of speed to break through Dominguez Hills' back line four minutes in.

Teague started the play in the middle third with a feed to forward Jocelyn Charette. Charette's short chip found Martinez with a defender on her hip, just inside the 18.

Amanda Johnson gave the Falcons a 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room at intermission. Teague's corner kick from the right side dropped just in front of the Toros' goal-mouth.

Keeper Alyssa Congdon, who had seven saves, moved toward the ball but could not fully control it, batting it hard toward the top of the penalty box in an attempt for clearance.

Stationed 12 yards in front of the frame, Johnson controlled Congdon's clearance and shot a blank straight down the gut that found the back of the net at 39:05.

Charette capped the scoring in the 59th minute with a charging header to the back post off Martinez' cross. Teague began the play when she sprung Martinez free down the right side-line.

Charette's shot was well placed, caroming off the inside of the far post and into the net from close-range.

Teague tied a GNAC single-game record with her three assists and established a new season conference mark as well with 16. SU's Ashley Porter has had 14 in each of the past three seasons. Teague is the eighth player in GNAC history to have three assists in a single game.

SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm earned her 10th shutout, but was never seriously threatened as the Falcons outshot the Toros 18-2 and Rahm didn't have to make a save.

Defender Claire Grubbs turned Yvonne Vasquez away early in the first half after Vasquez had received a thru-ball from mid-field and broken free down the right sideline and that was the closest CSUDH came to the Falcon net.

Seattle Pacific Completes Season at 20-0 (11/3/07)

Amanda Johnson scored with less than two minutes left in regulation as nationally No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific (20-0, 14-0) finished its regular-season with a perfect record, defeating Northwest Nazarene 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match in Nampa Saturday.

Elsewhere Western Washington beat arch-rival Central Washington 2-1 in overtime, Seattle University edged Montana State Billings 2-1 and Western Oregon and Saint Martin's battled to a 1-1 draw.

Seattle Pacific's 20 wins ties the school record for season victories posted by the 2005 squad that went 20-0-4, and reached the NCAA championship match. The 20 consecutive wins is also a record; the previous mark of 13 was set in 2004.

Johnson knocked in the game-winner at 88:05 with Kara Hamby's assistance, when she posted on a NNU defender, turned, and beat keeper Amanda Peters. Johnson's pooch-kick from close range found the left corner.

Janae Godoychad staked SPU an early 1-0 lead when she nodded a Sarah Martinez left side cross to the back of the net at 16:08. Godoy's header was from six yards and marked her eighth goal on the campaign.

Overall, the Falcons controlled the pace of the match, outshooting the host a lopsided 23-6. However, NNU (7-10-2, 4-9-1), which got 13 saves from Peters, managed to make things interesting when they equalized mid-way through the first half.

Defender Kendra Courcy's long searching-ball took a big bounce 12 yards in front of the Seattle Pacific goal, and evaded keeper Jesslyn Rahm, who was credited with three saves.

At Ellensburg, forward Lucy Miller scored in the 11th minute of overtime, lifting Western Washington (13-6-1, 8-5-1) past Central Washington (7-10-4, 4-8-2).

Miller's goal was the seventh of the season and her fourth game winner, tying her for the team lead in both categories. She ran behind the defense and beat the goalkeeper to the far post from 16 yards after getting the ball from Kelly Irving. It was Irving 's sixth assist this fall.

Central took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Andrea Archer, Hilary Davidson being credited with an assist.

The Vikings' Brynn Regan knotted the score at 1-1 in the 70th minute with her second goal of the season.

Claire Morgan had a free kick that Miller headed on and Regan deflected into the goal. It was Morgan's 10th assist and Miller's third.

At Seattle, Seattle University scored twice in the first half and held on to beat Montana State Billings.

Seattle (17-3, 12-2) won for the 15th time in the last 17 games. Its only losses during that span were to unbeaten Seattle Pacific.

The Redhawks got on the board in the 29th minute when Kate Edstrom scored her first goal of the season.  Edstrom was assisted by Kara Kuttler.

Seattle netted the eventual game winner in the 37th minute when Maryann Boddy scored her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Mickey Pelland.

Seattle outshot the Yellowjackets (9-10-1, 5-8-1), who sustained their first losing season since 2003, 22-4.

Still, MSUB narrowed the gap in the 63rd minute when Chelsea Libby took a cross from Amy Stephens and one touched it into the net for her third goal of the year.  The Jackets managed just one shot after Libby's goal, an attempt by Stephens in the 88th minute that went wide.

Brittney Knudtzon, who hadn't played since Sept. 22, was in goal for the entire 90 minutes for the Yellowjackets.  The freshman made nine saves and finished the season with a 5-3-1 record.  Seattle's Kaitlyn Jackson made one save in the win.

At Lacey, Western Oregon's Stephani Catt scored with six seconds remaining to tie the match at 1-1 and neither team scored in overtime as the Wolves (4-12-4, 4-8-2) and Saint Martin's (2-17-1, 1-12-1) battled to a 1-1 tie.

SMU had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kayci Donatelli in the 80th minute. Ashley Biral was credited with an assist.

Saint Martin's Gets First Conference Win (10/19/07)

Saint Martin's scored a pair of first half goals and held on to stun Montana State Billings 2-0 Friday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Lacey.

Elsewhere Seattle University got a goal from Sarah Dean in overtime to defeat Western Oregon 1-0.

Saint Martin's win was its first victory since Sept. 1, snapping a 11-game losing streak.

The Saints (2-14-0, 1-9-0) got first-half goals from Ashley Biral and Kayci Donatelli in the 35th and 45th minutes. The latter goal came with just 14 seconds left in the opening half.

The Yellowjackets had several scoring chances in the second half, but hit the crossbar three times and the post once.

MSUB (8-7-1, 4-5-1) outshot the Saints 13-2 in the second half and 18-10 in the game. Saints keeper Breanna Klasen made eight saves in the game, five coming in the second half.

At Monmouth, Dean's shot four minutes into overtime ended a spirited and physical match and allowed Seattle to stay in the hunt for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.

The Redhawks (14-2, 9-1) remained just three points back of leader Seattle Pacific with the victory,

Seattle outshot WOU (3-11-2, 3-7-0) on the day 16-4 and 8-2 on goal, but the Wolves defense forced a lot of those shots to come from way outside the goal.

Western Oregon actually had the most dramatic scoring attempt in regulation play when Naomi Shimabuku's 15-yard attempt hit the right crossbar, bounced near the net but did not go in.

Kaitlyn Jackson recorded the shutout in goal for the Redhawks, her 11th of the season. WOU freshman goalie Kelsie Blachly was solid for the hosts with seven saves.

Central Washington , NNU Battle To 2-2 Draw (10/18/07)

A pair of freshmen scored goals in the final 5:41 of regulation as the Central Washington rallied for a 2-2 tie with Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Thursday at Ellensburg.

The Wildcats (6-8-3, 3-6-1) trailed 2-0 before Ellie Eckroth and Amanda Biggs scored in the 85th and 87th minutes, respectively.

Eckroth scored off a pass from sophomore Danielle Monson to cut Central's deficit in half.

Then, just 107 seconds later, Shawnna Chastain lofted a free kick towards the goal, which Michelle Mohn passed to Biggs with a header. Biggs then fired her shot past NNU keeper Amanda Peters.

Neither team scored in the opening half, in which Central Washington held a 10-2 advantage in shot attempts.

Out of the halftime intermission, NNU (7-6-2, 4-5-1) went on a shooting frenzy, taking four shots in the first 7:24 of the period and scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead.

Katy McNutt registered her ninth goal of the year at the 50th minute off an assist by Hannah Mohs, with Hilary Hughes scoring just less than three minutes later after a pass by Carlee Stinton.

Both goals were scored as the result of two-on-one advantages for the Crusaders against CWU keeper Amber Easterbrook.

In the two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team accomplished much offensively. Each team had two shot attempts in the first extra session, but none were on goal.

Northwest Nazarene had both shots in the second overtime, including the only try on goal by Stinton at the 104th minute, which Easterbrook saved.

Central Washington finished with a commanding edge in shot attempts (27-16) and corner kicks (11-4). Twelve of the Wildcats' shots were on goal against Peters, who made 10 saves.

Easterbrook, who entered play Thursday as the GNAC leader in save percentage, made five saves in the match.

Martinez Leads Seattle Pacific To 16th Consecutive Win (10/17/07)

Forward Sarah Martinez scored a goal and assisted on another as Seattle Pacific blanked Western Washington 2-0 Wednesday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The loss was the fourth in five games for the Vikings (9-6-1, 4-5-1). Seattle Pacific (16-0, 10-0), which is ranked second nationally and first in the Far West Region, has won a GNAC record 16 consecutive games.

Following a scoreless first half, the Falcons scored in the 50th minute when Shannon Oakes sent a shot just under the crossbar from 16 yards following a cross from Martinez .

Martinez, the GNAC's all-time leading scorer, made it 2-0 in the 61st minute, as she found the left-hand corner of the net with a shot from 22 yards after a nice run. It was her league-leading 16th goal of the season.

Seattle Pacific goalkeeper Jesslyn Rahm made three saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season.

Western thwarted two excellent Falcon scoring chances in the opening half.

In the 11th minute, Seattle Pacific's Becca Woods took a shot from seven yards that Viking defender Shelby Marcell cleared with a header. And in the 23rd minute, Meredith Teague blasted a shot from 18 yards that goalkeeper Teresa Fish pushed over the bar.

The Vikings had their best scoring opportunity in the 39th minute, but Hahn made a nice save on a header by Brynn Regan off a corner kick.

Vikings, Redhawks Get Shutout Wins (10/14/07)

Forward Claire Morgan had a goal and an assist and Western Washington scored in each half to down Montana State Billings 2-0 Sunday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Billings.

Meanwhile, Seattle University (13-2, 8-1) stayed just three points back of conference leader Seattle Pacific (9-0 in the GNAC) by shutting out Central Washington 1-0 at Championship Field.

Leah Wymer scored the game's lone goal in the 18th minute to become the fourth 100-point scorer in both Seattle University school and GNAC history.

Western Washington's win pulled them into a tie with MSU Billings at 4-4-1 for third place in the conference.

The Vikings, ranked sixth in the NCAA Far West Region, improved to 9-5-1 overall while dropping the Yellowjackets to 8-6-1. Earlier this season the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in Bellingham.

"We played very inspired today," WWU coach Travis Connell said. "They (WWU's players) really went out and played hard and won their individual battles on offense. It was one our our better games."

“I thought it was a really good game,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham.  “Both teams worked hard and played well.  That's what you like to see in a key match up in the conference.

"It was two teams working hard to beat each other, and we just came up on the short end today.  I really thought we played a good game.  Nobody can fault our players' effort today.  It just didn't go our way.”

The Vikings, who snapped a three-game losing streak, dodged a bullet in the first 50 seconds when MSUB's Dani Ritter beat WWU goalkeeper Teresa Fish to a high-bouncing ball in the box.

Ritter headed a soft lob over Fish, but it was kicked away by a Viking defender just before it bounced over the goal line.

Western broke the scoreless tie at 23:47 when Morgan sent a free kick from about 40 yards over the head of Yellowjacket keeper Jordan Fenwick.  The ball skipped off Fenwick's hands just below the crossbar for a 1-0 Vikings lead.

WWU added an insurance goal in the 61st minute when Morgan and Lucy Miller broke free behind the defense.  Morgan, who leads WWU in goals with five and assists with eight, set up Miller, who fired from the left side off the hands of a diving Fenwick and inside the right post.

The Vikings out-shot the Yellowjackets 15-12, including 6-2 shots on goal.

Fenwick finished the day with four saves while Fish had one in posting her eighth shutout of the season and extending her own GNAC career-record total to 28.

At Seattle, Wymer, who has 42 career goals and 16 assists, scored her 15th of the season to move into a tie for first place in the GNAC for most goals with SPU's Sarah Martinez.

She took a long pass from Kate Edstrom which sprung her past the defense and then beat CWU goalie Amber Easterbrook one-on-one.

It was Wymer's fifth game winner of the season. Martinez leads the conference with six.

Seattle ended up with a 22-5 shot advantage and took three of the game's four corner kicks.

Easterbrook made six saves including one on a penalty kick late in the first half when Ashley Porter was taken down inside the Wildcat box.

Jasmine Wilson decided to go high with her penalty kick chance, but her shot hit the crossbar and bounced back to her. Her second attempt was stopped by Easterbrook, ending the scoring chance.

In the second half, Easterbrook had saves on point-blank chances by Wymer and Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas.

Central (6-8-2, 3-6-0) had a chance to tie the match late in the second half, as a shot by Danielle Monson with just over two minutes remaining got by Seattle goalie Kaitlyn Jackson but was sent away by Mickey Pelland.

Jackson finished with three saves in recording her conference leading 10th shutout of  the season. She currently ranks second in the GNAC with a 0.46 GAA and ranks second to Easterbrook (.860) in save percentage (.829).

Wolves Nip NNU, Falcons Win Again (10/13/07)

Kara Hamby netted a goal and an assist as Seattle Pacific (15-0, 9-0) maintained its perfect record in a 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over Saint Martin's Saturday night at Interbay Stadium.

Freshman Naomi Shimabuku broke a scoreless tie at the 75-minute mark, leading Western Oregon to a 1-0 win over Northwest Nazarene in Saturday's only other women's game.

Hamby garnered her first goal of the campaign off a penalty kick at 71:11, and assisted on a Shannon Oakes strike just over three minutes later with a thru-ball from the top of the box.

Oakes pushed toward goal, cut back to beat a Saints defender, and slotted the ball to the left post past Saint Martin's keeper Breanna Klasen.

Claire Grubbs opened up match scoring in the 19th minute when she headed Katie Taylor's cross from the right corner to the far post. Taylor had begun the sequence with a low corner kick that bounced off a Saints defender and back out to the corner.

Just prior to intermission, SMU (1-13, 0-9) had a chance to equalize. Julianna Sackeyfio ripped a hard shot at keeper Maddie Dickinson from 20 yards. Dickinson batted the ball down and out to a Falcon defender for clearance for her only save of the game.

Seattle Pacific, which is ranked second nationally, held a 20-2 shot advantage and earned 10 corner kicks to Saint Martin's one. Klasen registered a dozen saves.

WOU's win was the third for the Wolves (3-10-2, 3-6-0) in their last four outings, after a 0-9-2 start. Northwest Nazarene fell to 7-6-1 overall, 4-5 in the GNAC.

The victory also avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to the Crusaders in Monmouth. Shimabuku's goal came on a pass from Maggie Kuzmer to turn a tight match WOU's way at the 75:17 minute mark.

Shots on goal for the match were even at 6-6, and NNU had a slight edge in overall shots at 11-7.

Another freshman, Kelsie Blachly, recorded the shutout in goal for WOU, her second of the season.  Shimabuku's goal was her first as a collegian.

Yellowjackets Edge Central Washington (10/12/07)

MSU Billings scored two second half goals in a 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win over Central Washington Friday at Billings. The win moved the Yellowjackets (8-5-1, 4-3-1) into third-place in the GNAC.

The teams combined for just five shots, four by CWU, in a scoreless first half before the Yellowjackets got on the board at 67:39 on a penalty kick by Mandy Ploskonka after Kari Foreman was tackled in the box. It was Ploskonka's seventh goal of the season.

Almost 12 minutes later, the Yellowjackets added an insurance goal as freshman Samantha Sandau netted the eventual game-winner at 79:15.

Sandau picked up an entry pass from Jelisa Guy after it bounced off a defender's head and lobbed it over Wildcat goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook for her fifth goal of the season.

“I thought it was an important goal at the time,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham.  “It was a 1-0 game, and it was still really tight.  Sara (Gress) played a great ball in, and Jelisa flicked it in perfectly.  It was a great goal."

The Wildcats (6-7-2, 3-5-0) made things interesting in the 82nd minute as Chelsea Lovin took a short cross from the right side from Kaycie Hutchins and drilled it into the lower left corner of the net while spinning to the ground for her fourth goal of the season.

However, Central managed just one more shot in the final nine minutes, an attempt from Lovin that sailed high.

Easterbrook made four saves, including three in the second half.  Yellowjacket keeper Jordan Fenwick had three saves in the game.

Martinez Sets GNAC Scoring Record in 1-0 Victory (10/10/07)

Sarah Martinez' second-half goal made her Seattle Pacific's  all-time career point leader and kept  the Falcons' perfect record intact, as SPU beat Western Oregon 1-0  in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.

The victory gave Seattle Pacific, which is ranked second nationally, its 14th straight win and its best start in school history. The Falcons are 8-0 in the GNAC.

Meanwhile, Maryann Boddy scored two goals and also had an assist as Seattle University defeated Western Washington 4-2 at Championship Field.

Elsewhere Carlee Stinton earned two assists as Northwest Nazarene leveled its conference record at 4-4 with a 3-0 shutout of Saint Martin's.

Martinez' goal was her 15th on the season, and brought her to a school and GNAC record 113 points, two more than previous record holder Shannon Lovejoy (2001-05).

The senior forward took a feed from Shannon Oakes in the 52nd minute,  made a nice cut-back move  and slotted the ball past WOU keeper Kelsie Blachly to the left post.

Martinez was denied a second strike with 28 minutes remaining when she ran onto Jocelyn Charette's thru-ball. Martinez sent a bending ball at the right post that hit the frame.

Seattle Pacific outshot WOU 25-2 and earned a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks. Blachly was busy in goal,  recording  eight saves. Falcon keeper Jesslyn Rahm was not seriously threatened by WOU (2-10-2, 2-6-0).

Seattle University, ranked No.16 in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25, improved to 12-2-0 overall and 7-1-0 in GNAC action with its win. Western Washington, which has lost three straight fell to 8-5-1, including 3-4-1 in the conference.

The Redhawks, who have won 10 of their last 11 losing only to SPU, scored the first four goals of the game, leading 3-0 at halftime.

Sarah Dean got Seattle on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the 29th minute on a long throw-in that took one hop off the ground before bouncing towards the goal.

WWU keeper Teresa Fish leaped to stop it, but the ball bounced off her outstretched hands into the back of the net.

Five minutes later Leah Wymer scored her 14th goal of the season, taking a cross from Boddy in front of the net and scoring from five yards out.

Boddy tallied the next two Redhawk goals with Sarah Dean assisting on each. Boddy chipped in a shot in the 41st minute to make it 3-0 at halftime.

Boddy scored again in the 64th minute on a rebound shot after a Dean miss that was set up on a cross from Ashley Porter.

Western Washington scored its goals in a two-minute span in the second half. Kelly Irving scored from eight yards out in the 72nd minute after taking a long ball from Samantha Sommer.

The Vikings' Katie Warner found the net in the 74th minute as she redirected a shot by Lucy Miller.

Seattle had a 19-4 advantage in shots with the corner kicks tied at five apiece. Kaitlyn Jackson had one save for the Redhawks, while Fish stopped five shots for WWU.

Northwest Nazarene (7-5-1, 4-4-0) scored a goal in the fifth minute and added two second-half goals in handing Saint Martin's (1-13-0, 0-8-0) its 10th consecutive loss.

Stinton took a corner across the box and found Marie Smith, who headed the ball into the top right corner for her third goal of the season, to make it 1-0 at 4:50.

Out of the break the Crusaders got a goal from Liz Gross in the 56th minute when she converted a rebound created by another Stinton corner.

Then in the 79th minute, Kim Bowen took a deflection off of Saint Martin's keeper Breanna Klasen home for the tally.  Stinton earned an assist on Gross's goal, while Bowen's goal was unassisted.

Amanda Peters had five saves in recording the shutout, while Breanna Klasen stopped nine shots for the Saints. NNU finished with a 22-9 shot advantage and took five of the game's seven corner kicks.

Cal State Monterey Bay Edges Saint Martin's 3-2 (10/8/07)

Two second-half goals earned Cal State Monterey Bay a 3-2 win over Saint Martin's in a women's non-conference soccer game Monday at Lacey.

The Otters (4-5-2) snapped a 1-1 halftime tie on goals by Cassidy Bennett and Kyla Flores at 54:03 and 68:56, respectively. Bennett's goal came off a corner kick while Flores scored from 10 yards out off an assist by Courtney Hermann.

The Saints (1-12), who have lost nine straight, pulled to within one goal at 80:05 as Jessica Wilson's cross was put away into the far post by Kayci Donatelli, but SMU was unable to get the equalizer in the final 10 minutes.

Saint Martin's first goal came at 3:47 on a shot by Trisha Halvorson just 1:43 after the Otters had grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Loren Schofield.

SMU finished with a 17-13 shot advantage. Breanna Klasen had four saves for the Saints.

Central Washington Edges Vikings On Goal By Archer (10/6/07)

Andrea Archer scored her first goal of the season as Central Washington upset arch-rival Western Washington 1-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

Elsewhere Seattle University blanked Montana State Billings 4-0 and Western Oregon edged Saint Martin's 2-1 in overtime.

Western Washington's loss was its second straight and dropped the Vikings (8-4-1 overall) to 3-3-1 in conference. Central, which has won three of four, leveled its overall record at 6-6-2 and nearly pulled even (3-4-0) in conference.

The game's only goal was scored in the 57th minute when the Wildcats' Lindsay Mitchell had a shot deflect off the left goal post to Archer, who deposited it in the net from six yards.

Central had a 20-12 advantage in shots, including 13-0 in the opening 45 minutes. The Wildcats also had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Central goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook made six saves in recording her fourth shutout of the campaign.

Leah Wymer scored her 40th career goal and Ashley Porter had her 46th and 47th career assists, extending her own GNAC record, in Seattle's victory.

The Redhawks (11-2, 6-1) led 1-0 at halftime on a penalty kick by Maryann Boddy at 23:33, then scored three second-half goals after Yellowjacket captain Brittney Sandau was injured on a hard tackle and was taken to the hospital.

With Sandau, MSUB's leading scorer (7 goals, 5 assists) unavailable, Seattle outscored the 'Jackets 3-0 after the break on goals by Madison Collins (68:51), Wymer (77:16) and Jamie Coe (85:06).

MSUB (7-5-1, 3-3-1) did force Kaitlyn Jackson, who earned her ninth shutout, to make three saves early in the second half when it was still 1-0. But, Jackson turned all three shots away, returning the momentum back to the Redhawks.

"I thought the game came down to us not converting our chances and them converting their chances," MSUB coach Don Trentham said. "When it was 1-0, we had several opportunities to tie the game. We didn't take advantage of them. When you are playing against a good team like Seattle and don't take advantage of opportunities, they're going to punish you."

Seattle finished the contest with a 24-10 shot advantage, including 14-4 in the opening period.

Brenna Lander scored a second-half goal to force overtime, then set up Kristie Adkins' game-winner in overtime in Western Oregon's victory over Saint Martin's.

The Saints (1-11, 0-7) took a 1-0 lead at 15:49 on a shot from 10 yards by Kandis Jarvis, but Erica Hibbard's cross found Lander, who converted to make it 1-1 at 59:10.

Adkins then scored from 15 yards on Lander's cross at 102:18 to end it. The victory was WOU's second straight after opening the season with nine losses and two ties. The Wolves are now 2-5 in the GNAC.

Martinez Sets Record in SPU Win (10/5/07)

Sarah Martinez became the top career goal scorer in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer history Friday night as No. 3-ranked Seattle Pacific remained perfect on the season with a 3-0 win over Northwest Nazarene at Interbay Stadium.

Jocelyn Charette and Meredith Teague scored the other goals for the Falcons (13-0-0, 7-0-0). NNU (6-5-1 overall) is now 3-4 in the GNAC.

Martinez scored the 46th goal of her career and her league-leading 14th this fall at 65:43. Her goal broke the old GNAC career record of 45 set by Nichole Sauvageau of Seattle between 1999 and 2002.

She also now has 111 career points (46 goals, 19 assists) to tie the GNAC record set by SPU's Shannon Lovejoy between 2002 and 2005.

Charette opened the match scoring in the 25th minute when she won a footrace with NNU keeper Amanda Peters to a Shannon Oakes through ball. Charette beat Peters' dive toward the ball, cut back, and scored to an open net. It was her fourth goal in six games.

The Falcons turned a possession-oriented first-half tempo into an aggressive offensive attack in the second half. After twice being denied by Peters, Teague converted her own rebound for a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Janae Godoy assisted on the Martinez goal at 65:43 to complete the scoring.

Peters made a total of six saves and SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm had two to earn the shutout.

Seattle Pacific out-shot the visitors 16-4 and also finished with a 6-1 edge in corners.

Vikings Lose On Road To Cal State Dominguez Hills (10/2/07)

Unable to hold onto an early lead, Western Washington fell 2-1 to nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference women's soccer contest Tuesday at Toro Stadium in Carson, Calif.

The Vikings, who had a four-game unbeaten string (3-0-2) snapped, fell to 8-3-1.

CSUDH, ranked No.25 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, improved to 8-1-3.

“We played great for the first 20 minutes, but then it was really disappointing because we played really poorly in the second half,” said Western coach Travis Connell . “It's the second time (this season) that we've been up in a game and then we can't finish it off. We've got to do better than that in those situations.”

Western took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as forward Claire Morgan scored her fourth goal of the season on a thru ball from midfielder Amanda Font. It was the first goal that CSUDH had given up in six games.

The Toros evened the score in the 31st minute as Carrie Hirokawa got her seventh goal, finding the net on an indirect free kick from 20 yards with Amy Livergood getting an assist.

CSUDH got the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute, Yvonne Vasquez scoring on a corner kick by Hirokawa.

Illustrating their dominance, the Toros had a 16-3 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Western had not allowed a goal in its previous three games.

Western Oregon Earns First Win, Beats Central in Overtime (9/30/07)

Freshman Jill Petersen came off the bench to score the game's only goal 3 1/2 minutes into the second overtime and Western Oregon earned its first victory of the season by defeating Central Washington 1-0 Sunday at Ellensburg.

In Sunday's only other game, redshirt freshman forward Claire Morgan tied a school and GNAC record with three assists as Western Washington blanked Saint Martin's 4-0 at Lacey.

Petersen, a freshman from Clackamas, took a pass from Jessica Hicks and knocked in a shot from 25 yards out over the top of CWU goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook at 103:33 for the winning goal.

That snapped a scoreless streak of 327 minutes, 21 seconds for Easterbrook, who had two saves prior to giving up the game-winner.

Kelsie Blachly had six saves in recording her first shutout and WOU's second shutout of the season and lowering her goals against average to 1.49.

WOU, which is now 1-9-2 including 1-5-0 in the GNAC, has allowed only 22 goals in 12 contests, but Petersen's goal was just the fifth of the season for the Wolves.

Central, which outshot the visitors 16-12, fell to 5-6-2 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

At Lacey, Morgan became the ninth player in GNAC history to record three assists in a single game. It has been accomplished 10 times, including twice by Seattle University's Ashley Porter. Three of the occurences have been this season.

Morgan earned assists on goals by Amanda Font at 3:58, Molly Shannon at 11:30 and Rosie Zadra at 54:53. Font's goal was her fourth of the year, all game-winners.

WWU got an insurance goal at 81:27 on a shot from 16 yards by Lucy Miller.

The Vikings (8-2-1, 3-2-1) outshot Saint Martin's 23-4 and took eight of the nine corner kicks. Teresa Fish recorded four saves in earning her 27th career shutout, extending her own GNAC record. She has seven shutouts this season, including three in a row.

The Saints (1-10, 0-6) have been blanked six times this season and have also lost their last seven contests since earning their only win Sept. 1 against Notre Dame de Namur.

Seattle Pacific Wins In Overtime; Yellowjackets Earn First Road Win (9/29/07)

Jocelyn Charette scored from 18 yards in the second period of overtime to lift Seattle Pacific to a 2-1 victory over Seattle University in a battle of nationally-ranked Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer teams Saturday afternoon at Championship Field.

In the conference's only other game Saturday, Montana State Billings earned its first conference road win defeating Northwest Nazarene 3-1.

Seattle Pacific's win avenged an overtime loss in the final installment of the 2006 regular season and maintained the Falcons' perfect record. SPU, which is ranked third, improved to 12-0, 6-0 in the GNAC. Seattle, which is ranked 15th, fell to 10-2, losing its first conference game in six starts.

The rivals have gone to overtime the last three times they have met.

Charette managed a team-high five shots in the game, her final coming to fruition at 100:11 when an attempted clearance by a  Redhawk defender  caromed off Charette's leg near the top of the penalty box.

The hard shot lofted over top of SU keeper Kaitlyn Jackson and into the upper left corner.

Charette had challenged Jackson in the waning minutes of the first overtime period, forcing the keeper to dive right after a blank that was just off frame.

Seattle Pacific opened match scoring at 14:37, less than a minute after Meredith Teague unloaded an attempt that just missed over top of the crossbar. Shannon Oakes knocked a Charette cross from the left side across the goalmouth to the left post at 14:37.

The Redhawks equalized just  before half time (35:08) when Ashley Porter lofted a free kick from 45 yards deep into a crowded penalty box. Jasmine Wilson's header beat SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm to the upper left corner.

Rahm saved five shots over the course of the game; Jackson gathered in a pair. Shots held at a 13-8 Seattle Pacific advantage, the majority of those coming over the latter half of the contest.  Corner kicks were 7-2, Seattle Pacific.

At Nampa, Brittney Sandau scored two goals, including one in the 53rd minute to snap a 1-1 in MSUB's victory, its first road win as a member of the conference.

Sandau got the go-ahead goal when NNU keeper Amanda Peters missed a clearing pass and the bouncing ball skipped over her foot and found Sandau alone in front of the goal for an easy conversion.

The Yellowjackets (6-4-1, 3-2-1) added an insurance goal in the 80th minute as Jelisa Guy earned an assist on Danielle Ritter's third goal of the season.  Sandau's goals were her sixth and seventh of the season.

Sandau opened the scoring for the 'Jackets in the 15th minute. Samantha Sandau sent a pass up the middle where Brittney beat two defenders and sent a shot from 20 yards inside the right post.

Hannah Mohs evened the score for the Crusaders (6-4-1, 3-3-0) just after the half when Jenna Johnson tossed a throw-in to Katy McNutt who found Mohs at the 15-yard mark.  Mohs shot slipped in the left side in the 50th minute for her third goal of the season.

NNU outshot MSUB 18-11, though MSUB had one more shot on goal (8-7). The Crusaders also had a 8-2 corner kick advantage.

MSUB keeper Jordan Fenwick made six saves in recording the win, while Peters had five for NNU.

CWU Edges Saint Martin's in Overtime (9/28/07)

Central Washington freshman Kelsey Penn scored at the 99th minute, breaking a scoreless tie and giving the Wildcats a 1-0 women's soccer victory in a foul-plagued Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Saint Martin's Friday.

Elsewhere in the GNAC, Western Washington blanked Western Oregon 3-0 as Viking goalkeeper Teresa Fish made four saves and recorded her 26th career shutout, breaking the conference record of 25 set by Jennifer Hull of Seattle Pacific between 2001 and 2004.

Central's win evened its record at 5-5-2, and improved the Wildcats to 2-3-0 in the GNAC. Saint Martin's, a first-year women's soccer program, fell to 1-9-0 overall and 0-5-0 in conference action.

Penn scored her seventh goal of the season with just over a minute remaining in the overtime period, taking a pass from Kaycie Hutchins off a free kick from 35 yards out. Penn beat Saints keeper Breanna Klasen to the ball and found the unguarded net for the victory.

The two teams were whistled for a combined 45 fouls (25 by CWU and 20 by Saint Martin's). Central Washington finished with an 18-8 edge in shot attempts, including a 12-6 margin in shots on goal. CWU sophomore Amber Easterbook made six saves in the goal to record her fourth shutout of the season. Klasen had 10 saves.

Fish's shutout was her sixth of the season as she lowered her GAA to 0.70 and improved her save percentage to .853. She currently ranks third in the GNAC in both categories.

“They (the Viking team) were a little motivated; they wanted to get Fish the record,” said WWU coach Travis Connell . “They played good defense and got off to an early start in scoring, which was nice because it hasn't happened very often this season."

Western Washington (7-2-1, 2-2-1) scored twice in the opening 45 minutes, its first multi-goal first-half of the season, as Lucy Miller and Shelby Parcell found the net.

Miller got the Vikings on the board in the 20th minute, scoring from 16 yards after getting a long ball over the top of the defense from Kasey Hostetler.

Western, which outshot the Wolves (0-9-2, 0-5-0) 19-11, added another goal with 1:10 left in the half as Kelly Gagne headed in a cross from Shelby Marcell. A penalty kick by Claire Morgan in the 85th minute closed out the scoring.

Seattle Pacific's Martinez Ties GNAC Goals Record (9/27/07)

Sarah Martinez scored to the near post midway through the first half to give Seattle Pacific a 1-0 win over Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The nationally third-ranked Falcons (11-0 overall) moved into a first-place tie in the GNAC with Seattle University with the win. Both teams will take 5-0 conference records into Saturday's mid-season showdown at Championship Field.

Martinez' goal was the 45th of her career and enabled her to tie the GNAC record set by SU's Nichole Sauvageau between 1999 and 2002. She is now just two points short of the GNAC career for career points of 111 set by SPU's Shannon Lovejoy between 2002 and 2005.

Martinez trapped a long Meredith Teague ball from the midfield near the 18 yard line in the 29th minute. The senior forward made a cut-back move and ripped a hard shot to the post for the record-tying goal.

With 17 minutes remaining in the match, Martinez had another sure goal cleared off the end line by a Yellowjacket defender after she had threaded it by keeper Jordan Fenwick.

Fenwick recorded a staggering 17 saves (just one off the GNAC single-game record of 18) as Seattle Pacific peppered the MSUB goal with 26 shots.

SPU earned eight corner kicks to Billings' zero. The Seattle Pacific back line stopped the majority of MSUB's attacks, holding them to a solitary shot. The loss dropped the Yellowjackets to 5-4-1, including 2-2-1 in the conference.

Seattle University Edges Crusaders on Second-Half Goal by Kuttler (9/26/07)

Transfer Maria Madeira set up freshman Kara Kuttler for the only goal early in the second half as Seattle University edged Northwest Nazarene 1-0 Wednesday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Nampa.

Kuttler's first shot of the sequence was saved by Crusader goalie Amanda Peters, but Madeira corralled the ball and fed Kuttler who converted for her fourth goal of the season.

Seattle, which is ranked 15th nationally, also had an opportunity midway through the first half as a shot by Jasmine Wilson was blocked. Peters then made a save on an attempt by Ashley Porter.

The Redhawks had another flurry in the 38th minute as Leah Wymer was denied by Peters and Kuttler followed with a shot that went wide. Peters finished the match with six saves.

Meanwhile, Seattle held Northwest Nazarene (6-3-1, 3-2) to six shots. Kaitlyn Jackson made two saves on her way to her eighth shutout of the season.

The Redhawks (10-1, 5-0) extended their win streak to eight, one short of their school record with the win.

However to earn a share of the record, they'll have to get by unbeaten and nationally third-ranked Seattle Pacific (10-0) Saturday at Championship Field.

Western Oregon Loses To Corban 2-1 (9/25/07)

Corban senior Megan Waunch scored the game-winning goal as the Warriors defeated Western Oregon 2-1 Tuesday at Sparks Field in Salem.

Waunch, who also assisted on the tying goal, helped the Warriors win the non-conference match played at Willamette University. Corban improved to 5-6 on the season, while Western Oregon fell to 0-8-2.

The Wolves scored first on the evening on a shot by Kristie Adkins (from Megan Herber) at 16:38 in the first half. But Corban scored just 10 seconds later when Waunch's kick-off found Jessica Matthews, who punched the ball into the goal to make it 1-1.

Waunch scored the game winner at the 69:38 mark after a lead pass from Katie Hanson set her up in a one-on-one situation with Wolves goalie Kelsey Blachly.

The match was evenly played with WOU outshooting the Warriors overall at 10-8, but the shot on goal count was even at 5-5.

Vikings Blank Grand Canyon (9/24/07)

Midfielder Amanda Font scored her third game-winning goal of the season in the 88th minute and Teresa Fish recorded her 25th career shutout to tie the GNAC record as Western Washington blanked Grand Canyon 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings, who had won just one of their last four contests (1-2-1), improved to 6-2-1. They are 5-1-1 at home.

GCU, which has scored just two goals this season, was blanked for the eighth time in falling to 1-7-1.

Fish made four saves in notching her fifth shutout of the season and extending her own school career record as well as tying the GNAC record.

The game's only goal came at 87:02 on a corner kick by Kelly Irving. She miss hit the ball, sending it on the ground through a number of Grand Canyon defenders.

It rolled to the Vikings' Emily Frankland, who tried to knock it in, but instead ricocheted it to Font, who put the ball softly by the goaltender from six yards out.

All three of Font's goals this season have been game winners. It is the eighth game-winning goal of her four-year career, nearly half of her 17 total goals.

GCU goalkeeper Ruth Nsubuga, making just her second appearance in net for the Antelopes, had seven saves. Western had a huge 26-9 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Central Washington Ends Skid, NNU Blanks SMU (9/22/07)

Central Washington got a long-distance goal from freshman Amanda Biggs and a pair of "own" goals on corner kicks to defeat Montana State Billings 3-0 and end a five-game winless streak in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest at Ellensburg Saturday.

In other conference games, Katy McNutt scored twice to lead Northwest Nazarene to a 3-0 shutout of Saint Martin's and Sarah Martinez had a hat trick as Seattle Pacific (10-0, 4-0) remained unbeaten with a 4-2 win at Western Oregon.

In a non-conference game, Leah Wymer had the lone goal as Seattle University (9-1) blanked Grand Canyon 1-0 at Championship Field. Wymer and Martinez are now tied for the conference scoring lead each with 12 goals.

All three of CWU's goals came in the first half as the Wildcats (4-5-2, 1-3-0) ended a five-game skid in which they had scored just three goals, losing four times and earning one draw.

Biggs' goal, the first of her collegiate career, came from 37 yards on a shot that bounced over MSUB goalkeeper Brittany Knudtzon. CWU's other two goals came on corner kicks by Stacey Bankston and Lindsay Mitchell that deflected into the net off Yellowjacket defenders.

MSUB (5-3-1, 2-1-1), which sustained its first conference loss, outshot Central 17-11 in the contest, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, but Amber Easterbrook made eight saves to earn the shutout. CWU also had to overcome a 17-0 foul deficit to get its first conference win.

At Lacey, McNutt scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season (and the 37th and 38th of her career) as Northwest Nazarene improved to 6-2-1, including 3-1 in the GNAC.

Her first goal came at 17:30 on a cross that deflected off Saint Martin's goalie Breanna Klasen. After NNU then made it 2-0 on a penalty kick by Marie Smith at 27:37, McNutt needed just 36 seconds to complete the scoring at 28:13.

The teams were scoreless the remainder of the way as NNU had only a 5-4 shot advantage in the second half after taking 10 of the 11 shots and all eight of the corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.

Crusader goalkeeper Amanda Peters earned three saves in posting her third shutout of the season and the 12th of her career. The Saints fell to 1-8, including 0-4 in the conference with the loss.

Martinez recorded her second three-goal game of the season and the third of her career in pulling within reach of GNAC career records for goals and points in Seattle Pacific's win at Monmouth.

She had a header off a free kick at 3:28, converted a corner kick at 36:08 and then scored on another header on a free kick at 87:55. Jocelyn Charette scored SPU's other goal at 48:13 on another header.

Western Oregon (0-7-2, 0-4-0) got goals from Chelsie O'Neill and Kristen Werhane, its second and third of the season, at 36:08 and 84:07, respectively. The Wolves, however, were outshot 26-6 in the contest.

Martinez increased her career goal total to 44, one away from the GNAC record of 45 set by Seattle's Nichole Sauvageau between 1999 and 2002. Her career point total of 107 is four off the conference record of 111 set by SPU's Shannon Lovejoy between 2002 and 2005.

Seattle University outshot Grand Canyon (2-5-1) 27-4 in its victory and also had all eight of the corner kicks. Wymer took six shots, including the game-winner in the eighth minute.

After a scramble near the Antelope goal, Wymer corralled the ball and sent a shot past goalie Shela Robertson for her 39th career goal, just one behind Trisha Tateyama for third on Seattle's all-time goals list.

Kaitlyn Jackson was credited with three saves in recording her seventh shutout in 10 contests.

Meanwhile, Katie McNutt had two goals, extending her NNU school-record total to 36, as Northwest Nazarene (5-2-1) improved to 2-1 in the GNAC with a 3-0 shutout of punchless Western Oregon.

In a night game, Montana State Billings (5-2-1, 2-0-1) and Western Washington (5-2-1, 1-2-1) battled to a 2-2 standoff in Bellingham as the Vikings, who outshot the Yellowjackets 31-8, got a goal from Rosie Zadra with 49 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Wymer took the conference scoring lead with her 10th of 11th goals of the season in Seattle's win at Ellensburg. She scored off an assist by Porter at the 16:57 mark to make it 1-0.

It remained a one-goal contest until eight and a half minutes into the second half, when the Redhawks scored at the 54th and 61st minutes on goals by Sarah Dean and Wymer for a 3-0 cushion.

Porter earned her 10th assist of the season and the 44th of her career on Wymer's second goal, the 38th of her career.

CWU freshman Kelsey Penn scored off a corner kick at the 80th minute to break Kaitlyn Jackson's shutout bid. Jackson finished with a season-high seven saves.

Penn, who scored five goals in her first three collegiate games in August, took a centering pass off a corner kick by senior Stacey Bankston and found the net. It was just the third goal allowed in nine games by Jackson and snapped a 457-minute scoreless string for the Redhawk defense.

Seattle finished the contest outshooting CWU 22-11. Central's keeper, freshman Aneesa Gonzales had five saves. The Wildcats (3-5-2 overall) remained winless in three conference games.

At Monmouth, McNutt scored just a little over four minutes into the contest, and then sealed the road victory with a header at 62 minutes.

Carlee Stinton pushed the Wolves into a hole early with NNU's second goal at the 13 minute mark on an unassisted shot that caromed off the right cross bar and found the back of the net.

Amanda Peters had the shutout in the goal for the Crusaders, tallying eight saves on the day.

Western Oregon (0-6-2) outshot the Crusaders11-8 overall, but were shutout for the seventh time in eight games. WOU has been outscored 7-0 in three conference losses and 13-1 overall in its eight contests.

At Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus, Zadra took a lofted chip from midfield by Kasey Hostetler and hit a shot into the lower right-hand corner of the net in the final minute of regulation to earn Western Washington a draw.

It was Zadra's first goal since the final game of the 2005 season, a stretch of 28 games.

The Vikings had two excellent chances to win in the extra period. A shot by Claire Morgan in the 103rd minute went off the left post and a header by Katie Warner from five yards out with 32 seconds left went directly to the goalkeeper.

MSUB's Danielle Ritter opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 35th minute, her second of the season. She got the ball off a turnover, deflected it forward, and chipped it in from 16 yards over sliding Western goalkeeper Teresa Fish.

In the 44th minute, Mandy Ploskonka made it 2-0, scoring her fifth goal of the campaign. A corner kick by Brittney Sandau was deflected by Melissa Carlson to Ploskonka, who knocked it in from point-blank range.

Sisters Samantha and Brittney Sandau combined for four goals and two assists in MSU Billings' win as Samantha had three goals and an assist and Brittney added a goal and an assist.

Samantha, who is a freshman, started the scoring early, taking a through ball from Melissa Carlson and beating the Saints' Breanna Klasen just 3:45 into the game.

Saint Martin's answered less than two minutes later when Julianna Sackeyfio sent a free kick from about 35 yards over the head of Yellowjacket keeper Brittany Knudtzon.

The scoring flurry subsided until the 33rd minute when freshman Kari Foreman scored the first of two goals on the day.  Yellowjacket freshmen accounted for five of the team's six goals.

Samantha broke open the game with back to back goals early in the second half.  Just three minutes into the half, her free kick from 40 yards slipped through Klasen's fingertips and fell into the goal.

A little over two minutes later, she took a corner kick from sister Brittney and drilled the net from just outside the box.

The Saints closed the gap to 4-2 at 59:40 when Ashley Biral's shot caromed off a defender's legs and over the outstretched hands of backup goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick

MSUB sealed the deal with two late goals.  Samantha returned the favor to Brittney at 78:55, slipping a through ball past the defense to set up her sister for a 1-on-1 move on Klasen.  The goal was Brittney's team-leading fifth of the season.

Foreman netted her second of the day five minutes later, punching it in from point blank range after Chelsea Libby sent a perfect crossing pass across the back line.

CWU (3-4-2, 0-2-0) opened the scoring against NNU in the eighth minute when Chelsea Lovin intercepted a soft pass from Crusader goalkeeper Amanda Peters that was intended for another Crusader defender.

Lovin took one dribble and sent a 15-yard shot to the upper left of the goal, her third of the season.

NNU (4-2-1, 1-1-0) answered in the 43rd minute when Courcy scored on a free kick from 30 yards following a CWU foul.  Courcy's blast went in just below the crossbar off the outstretched hand of Wildcat keeper Aneesa Gonzales.

The Crusaders scored the game winner in the 60th minute as NNU career goal leader Katy McNutt scored her 34th career tally, a 10-yard shot from the left, a result of a Courcy cross that was headed over to McNutt by freshman Kim Bowen.

NNU outshot the Wildcats 15-10 and held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.  Both Peters and Gonzales finished with five saves.

At Interbay, Janae Godoy scored twice in the first half including the game winner  to lift No. 8 Seattle Pacific to its win.

Western and SPU traded quick goals in the 12th minute as the game reached a torrid pace. The Vikings' Ashley McDougall struck first blood, connecting on a 20-yard shot to the upper left corner after a Falcon defender slipped near the top of the penalty box.

McDougall's strike was well placed and SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm could not get a hand on the ball.

Just 16 seconds later, Sarah Martinez and Jessica Gerstmann teamed up to thread a ball across Western's goalmouth. Godoy finished from 12 yards to tie the game at 1-1.

Godoy garnered the game winner for SPU at 34:01 when she poked a Meredith Teague corner-kick across the goal line in heavy traffic. Western keeper Teresa Fish had a hand on the ball, but could not keep it from breaching the line.

Fish was busy over the course of the game. She tallied a half-dozen saves. Rahm finished with three. Seattle Pacific shot 13 times to the Vikings' eight and earned seven corner kicks to Western's three.

Kara Kuttler took a pass from Mickey Pelland and chipped a shot over SMU goalkeeper Breanna Klasen just 31 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0.

Janae Godoy scored the game-winning goal with just under 17 minutes remaining in the game to lift Seattle Pacific to a 1-0 victory over Central Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.

The win was the third consecutive shutout for the Falcons who remained unbeaten in seven games and are ranked eighth nationally. Central Washington fell to 3-3-2.

Godoy broke the stalemate in the 73rd minute. The sophomore midfielder took advantage when a Central defender slipped near the corner of the penalty box on the right side.

Godoy quickly controlled the ball and pushed toward goal. Her 15-yard strike hit the far corner of the net. Keeper Aneesa Gonzales dove toward the corner but could not get a hand on the ball.

Gonzales registered a pair of saves in the contest as did SPU keeper Jesslyn Rahm. Overall, Seattle Pacific outshot the visitors13-2.

Central challenged Rahm with several long attempts in the first half, and played a physical game on defense, evidenced in their 11 fouls. Seattle Pacific was whistled five times.

The pace of the game quickened in the second half. With 37 minutes remaining, Shannon Oakes broke free on a run down the left center and ripped a hard, spinning shot toward the far post that missed just wide right.

Two minutes later, Kara Hamby crossed from the right corner but Amanda Johnson's header hit the near post.

Central forwards broke into SPU's back line three times in the waning minutes of the game, but did not seriously threaten.

Vikings Escape With Overtime Win at NNU on Font's Goal

Midfielder Amanda Font scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute as Western Washington edged Northwest Nazarene 3-2 in overtime in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Wednesday at the NNU Soccer Field.

The Vikings, who were playing their first road game of the season, improved to 5-1-0 overall and leveled their GNAC record at 1-1. It was the league opener for NNU, which fell to 3-2-1 overall. Both of the Crusaders' losses and their tie have gone to overtime.

It was the seventh game-winning goal of Font's four-year career (16 total goals) and her second this season. A corner kick was headed out, but Katie Warner corralled it and slipped a pass to Font who finished from 16 yards out.

“Both teams came to play,” said Western coach Travis Connell. “I give a lot of credit to Northwest Nazarene because this is the best team they've ever had I think. They had us on the run at times, but our players responded well and had enough to get the victory in overtime.”

"I felt that we played very well today and I was proud of the way we battled back twice under pressure," said NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall.  "Western is a good team, one of the best in the West Region, so this was a quality effort."

After a scoreless first half, Western got on the scoreboard in the 49th minute as Brynn Regan headed in a corner kick by Rosie Zadra. The Crusaders tied it at 1-1 four minutes later on a header by Liz Gross off a corner kick by Carlee Stinton.

Western scored an own goal in the 80th minute on a cross that was deflected into the net by a NNU player. The Crusaders tied it a 2-2 in the 86th minute on a goal by Hannah Mohs with Liz Gross and Katy McNutt getting assists.

NNU had a 19-14 advantage in shots, but the Vikings had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Katy McNutt produced her fourth career hat trick leading Northwest Nazarene to a 3-2 win over Whitman in a non-conference women's soccer game Saturday at Nampa.

Elsewhere Seattle defeated Western Washington 1-0 in a conference match. In other non-conference games, Seattle Pacific improved to 6-0 with a 3-0 shutout of Notre Dame de Namur and Saint Martin's lost 7-0 at Whitworth.

McNutt, a senior forward from Vancouver, Wash., increased her NNU career-best scoring mark to 33. She also ranks fifth in GNAC history in total goals scored.

“Katy’s performance was great for her…it gives her a nice feel going into conference play,” NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall said. “We moved the ball well all day and gave ourselves many quality scoring opportunities.”

Her first strike came in the 39th minute when she took a huge punt from NNU goalkeeper Amanda Peters after just one bounce and beat Whitman
goalkeeper Courtney Porter to the left side from 20 yards.

McNutt's second and third goals came just over eight minutes apart to begin the second half.

In the 60th minute Whitney Teague found McNutt 15 yards out and then in the 68th minute McNutt took a one-touch cross from Hilary Hughes and launched a 25-yard shot to the upper right corner. Kim Bowen was also credited with an assist on the third goal, beating two defenders to deliver the pass to Hughes.

Leading 3-0, Lindvall was able to play deep into his bench, which surrendered two late goals to the Missionaries, one to Kristen Berndt in the 79th minute and one to Corina Gabbert in the 85th minute.

The Crusaders, now 3-1-1, out-shot the Missionaries 25-21 with 11 shots on goal, six of which came off the boot of McNutt.

WC’s Porter grabbed eight saves, while NNU’s Peters had four. Erin Donnelley made one save but surrendered two goals in the final 12 minutes of action.

Jen Hamann scored from 10 yards out in the fifth minute for the only score in Seattle's victory.

Leah Wymer beat a defender near the touchline and hit a low cross from the right side that ended up at the feet of Hamann. The goal was the first allowed by Western Washington this season, ending a string of 364 consecutive scoreless minutes.

Seattle (5-1) had a 13-6 advantage in shots, but Western did have two good chances in the late going. Defender Katie Warner had a shot from 10 yards skim just outside the right post in the 77th minute, then in the 81st minute, an attempt from the top of the penalty area by midfielder Amanda Font went just over the crossbar.

Kaitlyn Jackson had two saves in recording the shutout, while Teresa Fish made two stops for Western Washington (4-1).

Sarah Martinez, Becca Woods and Mallorie Gertsmann scored goals as Seattle Pacific (6-0) opened a three-game home stand with a 3-0 win at Interbay Stadium.

Martinez opened the match with her 40th career goal scoring straight away in the second minute after taking a feed from Shannon Oakes at the top of the penalty box.

Martinez' strike beat starting Argo keeper Allie Howarth to the right post. She left the game with 16 minutes remaining in the first half with an ankle injury and did not return.

Woods nodded a Meredith Teague corner-kick to the upper  right of the frame at 10:40.

SPU completed the scoring early in the second half as Kayla Stiegemeier, who also had an assist on the Falcons' first goal, crossed to Mallorie Gerstmann on the six-yard line for Gerstmann's first collegiate goal at 45:30.

The Falcons finished with an 18-3 shot advantage and earned 11 corner-kicks to the Argos' 0. SPU goalie Jesslyn Rahm had two saves in 75 minutes of action.

Whitworth (3-0) scored three goals in the first half and four in the second in crushing Saint Martin's. Emily Rohde had a hat trick and Penelope Crowe had two assists for the Pirates, who outshot SMU 23-2, dropping the Saints to 1-4 on the season.

Central Loses At Home to Notre Dame (9/7/07)

Central Washington held a 22-15 advantage in shot attempts, but Kristen Orlando's second-half goal gave visiting Notre Dame de Namur a 1-0 women's soccer victory over the Wildcats Friday afternoon at the CWU Soccer Field.

Orlando scored the game's only goal at the 55th minute after a scrum in the goal box following a corner kick by the Argonauts (1-3-1). She emerged from the mayhem in the box and beat CWU sophomore Amber Easterbrook for a 1-0 lead.

For the second straight game, Central Washington (3-2-2) held a shooting advantage but was unable to come away with a victory. On Tuesday, the Wildcats outshot visiting Northwest by a 31-2 margin in a 1-1 tie.

Easterbrook made a total of five saves in the goal for CWU, while two keepers -- Allie Howarth and Cristina Dito -- split time in the goal and combined for five saves for Notre Dame de Namur.

The Wildcats, who flourished offensively with 11 goals in their first three games, have now scored just twice in their last four outings.

MSUB Loses, Two Others Tie (9/5/07)

University of Mary scored in the first 20 minutes and again with 22 minutes remaining to defeat Montana State Billings 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday at Bismarck, N.D.

In other games, Northwest Nazarene and Western Oregon earned draws. The Crusaders battled Westminster to a 1-1 standoff. Western Oregon played a scoreless draw with Linfield. The Wolves have yet to score in four contests this fall.

Mary (2-1) jumped on the board first against MSUB when Shanda Lester scored on a direct kick from just outside the box at 17:54.

MSUB tied the contest early in the second half as the Jackets' Abby Bennett picked up a loose ball in the box and deposited it into the left corner at 49:20.

Jordan Fenwick started in goal for MSU Billings and was replaced at 63:28 by Brittany Knudtzon.  Mary wasted little time challenging Knudtzon, who entered the contest with a 3-0 record in goal.  Megan Wilson took a feed from Danielle Mellow and beat Knudtzon with the game winner at 68:20.

Each team attempted 15 shots in the game with Mary firing eight shots on goal and the Jackets six.  Fenwick finished with two saves and Knudtzon made four.

At Salt Lake City, Westminster and NNU battled to a scoreless draw at half before the Griffons (4-0-1) struck in the 49th minute when Jennifer Pirente scored after gaining possession of a defensive deflection

NNU (2-1-1) evened the score in the 77th minute when Kendra Courcy scored off a free kick from just outside the box. A high-arching shot from 30 yards out resulted in her second goal of the season.

"We had some great opportunities, but just couldn't find the back of the net," NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall said. "We dominated the play and moved the ball very well on a huge, 120 by 80 FieldTurf field, so I'm very pleased with the team's effort. Defensively we did a good job, but we had the one defensive deflection that created a chance for them to score."

NNU outshot the Griffins 14-6, forcing WC's Kelsey Allen to make 11 saves. Amanda Peters was credited with four saves for the Crusaders, who took four of the six corners.

At Monmouth, Western Oregon (0-3-1) and Linfield (0-1-1) took 37 shots between them, 24 by the Wolves and 13 by the Wildcats, but each came up empty.

Ally Meyer had seven saves in recording the shutout for WOU, while Linfield's Kelsey Hasselblad notched 14 saves.

Hasselblad had two terrific saves in the first overtime to help save the Wildcats, on back-to-back shots by Stephani Catt and Cori Young. Hasselblad leaped to knock the first shot away and then grabbed Young's rebound shot.

Seattle Pacific Wins Fifth Straight (9/4/07)

Janae Godoy scored off a crossbar rebound in the middle of the second half to lift 10th-ranked Seattle Pacific over No. 19 Chico State 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Tuesday night in Chico.

The victory pushed the Falcons to a perfect 5-0 on the season. Chico State dropped to 3-1.

Meanwhile, Central Washington battled to a 1-1 draw with Northwest University in a contest at Ellensburg.

Godoy was the beneficiary of a Shannon Oakes shot that caromed off the Chico State crossbar in the 60th minute.

Sarah Martinez began the play near midfield when she drew two Wildcat defenders and laid the ball off to Oakes.

Oakes progressed toward the attacking third and ripped a 30-yard blank off the top of the Chico crossbar. Godoy wisely followed Oakes' attempt and scored easily from the penalty box.

Seattle Pacific held a 15-7 advantage in shots over the course of the match with Godoy taking two. Chico State keeper Kari Gonzales registered five saves. Jesslyn Rahm made one save in recording the shutout for SPU.

Lynde Clarke scored at the fifth minute, and Central Washington (3-1-2) held a 31-2 shot advantage, but all it could manage was a draw against Northwest (0-3-2).

Clarke scored at the 4:28 mark on a pass from Hannah Bridges. The Wildcats held that lead for just under 13 minutes until Shauna Marshall tied it at the 17:15 mark on a lob shot from 30 yards out.

Despite its significant shot advantage, Central Washington was never able to score a go-ahead goal the rest of the way, playing to its second draw in six starts this season. The Wildcats have now outshot their opposition by a 116-44 margin in six contests.

Freshman Aneesa Gonzales did not have to make a save in goal for CWU, while the Eagles' Jasmine Yeldon made 10 stops between the pipes.

Yellowjackets, WWU, CWU Get Wins (9/3/07)

Montana State Billings scored early and used some great goalkeeping by Brittany Knudtzon to hold on for a 3-1 win against Regis Monday in a non-conference soccer game at Billings.

Meanwhile, Western Washington (4-0) and Central Washington (3-1-1) posted Far West Region home shutouts. The Vikings blanked Cal State Stanislaus 3-0 for their fourth straight shutout win. CWU, back from a four-game trip to Hawaii, shut out San Francisco State 1-0 in its home opener.

Montana State Billings found pay dirt inside of 10 minutes when Mandy Ploskonka took a quick cross in the box from Brittney Sandau and drove it past Rangers keeper Holly Redmond.  It was Ploskonka's third goal and Sandau's first assist of the year.

The Yellowjackets controlled possession for much of the early going, but only challenged Redmond three times on the day.  All three shots on goal from MSUB found the net.

Kari Foreman scored her first collegiate goal at 27:12 when she headed in a ball from Samantha Sandau.  Forman's goal turned out to be the game winner.

“Kari's goal is a reflection of what we worked on in training this week,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham.  “We wanted the weak side runners getting in the box.  Mandy Ploskonka and Samantha Sandau did a nice combination, and Kari finished it off.  It's nice to see two freshmen link up for the game winner.”

Brittney Sandau gave the Yellowjackets an insurance goal early in the second half when she beat a Rangers defender one-on-one and scored from the left side.  Sandau's third goal of the year, coming at 58:30, gave MSUB breathing room, but Knudtzon still had to work for the win.

The freshman made five saves with all of them coming in the second half.  A few of the saves were at the end of her reach with diving efforts knocking the shots out of play.

“I thought Brittany Knudtzon was the player of the match today,” said Trentham.  “She made a couple key saves that helped us get the win.  Without her making a couple great saves, the game would have been a different story.”

The Rangers' five shots on goal in the second half were indicative of the momentum shift that took place after Sandau's goal.  Regis couldn't crack Knudtzon, though, and time ran out on the Rangers' comeback bid.  Knudtzon won her third decision of the season to remain unbeaten at 3-0.

Forward Emily Frankland scored twice and Claire Morgan had two assists in Western Washington's victory at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings, who are opening the season with five home games, have yet to give up a goal this season as goalkeeper Teresa Fish made five saves in recording the school-record 24th shutout of her four-year career. She is now one away from the GNAC record of 25.

Frankland broke a scoreless tie in the 50th minute, finding the net from 10 yards out off a quick set piece with Morgan getting an assist.

Less than three minutes later, Western's Kasey Hostetler chipped in a rebound from point-blank range. It came following a header off the post by Katie Warner on a corner kick by Kelly Irving..

The Vikings, who outshot the Warriors 11-8 and had a 4-3 corner kick advantage, also scored in the 66th minute as Frankland took a pass from Morgan and knocked in a shot from 10 yards away. Morgan already has four assists on the season.

Kaycie Hutchins scored the game's only goal in the opening minute of the second half in Central Washington's victory. Hutchins took a pass from Lynde Clarke and put it past San Francisco State goalkeeper Sarah Balderas at 45:52.

Wildcat goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook then made a crucial save with 1:39 to go in the match preserving the victory.

Seattle outshot San Francisco State 15-7 in the contest. Kaitlyn Jackson had two saves to record the shutout.

Marie Smith's header off Stinton's corner made it 1-0 at 13:10. Early in the second half, NNU scored again on a shot from 30 yards by Kendra Courcy. Stinton then converted the penalty kick to complete the scoring at 63:10.

NNU finished with a 22-10 edge in shots and took twice as many corners (6-3). Amanda Peters had three saves before being replaced with 12:23 remaining in the contest.

Stephanie Insler scored on a cross at 34:50 for the only goal in Chico's victory over Western Oregon. The Wildcats outshot the Wolves 20-5 though only six were on goal.
