Seattle Pacific's Season Ends With Regional Shootout Loss To Chico State

Charette
31 Career Goals

Molly Downtain converted the winning penalty kick as Chico State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II West Regional women's soccer tournament Thursday night at Triton Stadium ousting defending national champion Seattle Pacific.

The teams played to a scoreless draw before Chico earned the right to advance against No. 2 seeded UC San Diego with a 4-3 advantage on penalty kicks. Officially the game will go into the record book as a draw, leaving SPU with a final season record of 16-3-2.

Incredibly it was a NCAA-record ninth tie of the season for Chico (8-5-9), which has only eight wins in 22 contests this season.

“PKs are a tough way to go down,” said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra, who directed the Falcons into the postseason in each of his seven seasons. SPU won five playoff games last season en route to its first national title.

“I feel like I'm on both ends of the spectrum, going all the way last year and being out in the first round this year. We had a lot of injuries and we're a very young team, so I'm proud of how this team battled.”

The Falcons fell in the first round of the playoffs despite an 18-8 advantage in shots, including 6-0 in the two 10-minute overtime sessions.

“We came out and played hard. We had a lot of the run of play tonight and outshot them 18-8,” Sekyra said. “We created enough chances to be successful tonight, but you have to give Chico State credit. I thought they battled and hung tight.”

SPU won the coin toss and elected to kick first in the five-round shootout. Jocelyn Charette nailed the opening shot and Chico's Sadi Souder answered with a successful kick.

Brandi Hamre attempted SPU's second penalty kick and sent it wide right. Blake Lopes then converted to give the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage.

Falcon freshman Megan Lindsay drove one into the back of the net and goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson evened the score, diving to her left to stop Chico's third try by Shelby Dunlap.

Janae Godoy and her fourth-round CSU counterpart Christine Kearney both were successful for a 3-3 score after four rounds.

In the fifth round, SPU freshman Taylor Sawyer's shot sailed over the crossbar. That set up Downtain's winning kick that went into the left side of the goal while Dickinson dove right.

Earlier this season, on Sept. 8 Sawyer converted a penalty kick for the only goal in SPU's 1-0 win at Chico State.

“Penalty kicks are rough. I wouldn't have felt too good if we won or loss in PKs,” said Sekyra. “It's kind of tough. You want to keep playing, but it's got to be settled at some point so that one team has enough energy to play on Saturday. We were just a little unlucky there.”

The Falcons had an 8-3 shot advantage in the first half, but just one of the attempts was on frame. Hamre's low 20-yard shot forced CSU goalkeeper Natalie Bensky to fall on the ball in the center of the goal for the save. Bensky was credited with five saves, while Dickinson was not required to make a save during the game.

Chico's most dangerous opportunity came in the 70th minute when Kasey Wall headed a corner kick to the left post that an SPU defender cleared off the line.

SPU had two great opportunities during overtime. Lindsay hit a 25-yard drive five minutes into the first overtime that Bensky was barely able to tip over the crossbar.

Charette sent a hard shot in 107th minute that Chico defender Sarah Steele stopped near the goal line. The senior forward concludes her career as SPU's No. 3 all-time scorer with 31 goals.

Seattle Pacific Wins Sixth Women's Soccer GNAC Title

Seattle Pacific wrapped up its sixth GNAC women's soccer title in nine years and clinched a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 6-0 shutout of Northwest Nazarene Saturday at Interbay Stadium.

Jocelyn Charette, one of four seniors playing in her final regular-season game for SPU, had three goals and an assist as the Falcons (16-3-1, 9-2-1) finished the regular season one point ahead of defending champion Western Washington (11-4-4, 8-1-3) to claim the GNAC's automatic berth in the playoffs.

Western Washington defeated Montana State Billings 2-1 in its final game and will await word from the NCAA on whether it will be granted an at-large berth in the six-team regional playoffs.

In Saturday's final game, Saint Martin's ended its season with a five-game win streak defeating Central Washington 3-2 in overtime.

Western Washington, currently No.6 in the NCAA Division II West Region ratings, would would need to climb ahead of at least one of this week's top five to earn an at-large berth.

Charette, who registered her third hat trick of the season increasing her league-leading total to 15 goals, scored in the second, 10th and 49th minutes climbing into the No. 3 spot among all-time SPU scorers with 31 career goals.

Seattle Pacific got contributions from all four of its seniors, including Kayla Stiegemeier who has been injured and saw her first action of the season. She started and distributed an assist on Charette's opening goal just 1:49 into the game.

Charette took a pass from Brandi Hamre and dribbled through the box toward the end line before sneaking a six-yard shot inside the left post from a sharp angle.

Megan Lindsay notched the Falcons' second goal at 7:35. Lindsay made a dribbling run before sending an 18-yard shot into the lower right of the NNU goal for her sixth goal of the year.

Charette put SPU ahead 3-0 with a four-yard shot at 9:53 off a pass from Kelsey Jenkins, who had drawn the goalkeeper off her line.

Those two Falcons exchanged roles five minutes later. Charette assisted on SPU's fourth score at 14:55, a low, perfectly placed 15-yard shot that Jenkins sent across the box and just inside the left post. That was the fifth goal of the season for Jenkins.

Charette completed her hat trick with a short header at the far post at 48:44 off a corner kick from the left side by Hamre. She also had three-goal performances at home against Grand Canyon (Sept. 11) and Montana State Billings (Oct. 21).

Senior Janae Godoy capped the scoring with her first goal of the season converting a penalty kick at 57:51, while senior Jesslyn Rahm Kellerman made four saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season. She has 22 career shutouts, a figure that ranks No. 2 among all-time SPU goalkeepers.

At Billings, midfielder Kasey Hostetler scored one goal and assisted on another in Western Washington's win over MSUB (9-10-1, 5-7-0) at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex as the Vikings extended their unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).

The Vikings scored in the ninth minute as Hostetler beat a defender at midfield and played a through ball to Molly Shannon who scored from 18 yards.  It was Shannon 's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

In the 26th minute, Claire Morgan posted up on the right side of the penalty area, turned her defender and made a pass to Hostetler, who found the net with a left-footed strike from 15 yards.

MSUB, which outshot the Vikings 11-8, did not score until the final minute when Jaucelyn Richter posted her 11th goal of the season. Samantha Boehm and Jennifer Larsen had assists.

Kayci Donatelli scored a pair of goals, including one from five yards out in overtime as Saint Martin's (12-7-0, 8-4-0) completed its most successful season in its short three-year history with a win over Central Washington.

Donatelli also scored in traffic from three yards in the 22nd minute and Jenny Baker took a corner kick from Jill Webb to make it 2-0 in the 44th minute.

Central Washington (8-10-1, 5-6-1), however, pulled even in the second half as freshman Carson McKole scored a pair of goals. She took an assist from Gwenna Carie beating Saint Martin's keeper Ashley Engel from 12 yards out in the 56th minute.

She then knotted the score at 65:08 off a pass from freshman Estelle Hage, caroming her shot off a Saints defender and into the goal.

In a very evenly-matched contest, each team finished with 13 shot attempts. Nine of Saint Martin's tries made it on goal against Easterbrook, who made five saves in her final collegiate appearance. Engel made three stops in five shots on goal for Saint Martin's.

Falcons Retake Control of GNAC Race With Win, Western Washington Draw

Forward Jocelyn Charette assisted on the equalizer and scored the game-winner eight minutes into overtime as Seattle Pacific rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Montana State Billings 3-2 Thursday at Yellowjacket Field.

The win, which snapped SPU's three-game winless streak, enabled the Falcons (15-3-1, 8-2-1) to retake control of the GNAC race as Western Washington (10-4-4, 7-1-3) was tied by Northwest Nazarene 1-1 at Bellingham.

The Falcons now have a one-point lead over the Vikings in the race for the GNAC's automatic berth in the playoffs. Both teams have one game left.

Charette's goal at 98:10 was her league-leading 12th score. Half of those have been game-winning strikes. Her long shot from the left side of the box into the upper right corner ended the game.

“Jocelyn just has the ability to change a game at any moment and today again she did. She reached deep down inside and was just amazing,” said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra.

Freshman Andrea Chan forced the overtime. She headed in a corner kick by Charette at 76:09.

Jaucelyn Richter scored MSUB's first goal against the Falcons at 14:11. Teammate Carly Valentine made a long dribbling run with the ball before setting Richter up with a through ball.

Kari Foreman pushed the Billings lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal at 31:16. Freshman Megan Lindsay started the SPU rally with an unassisted goal at 61:22. That was her fifth goal of the season.

Meanwhile at Bellingham, Western Washington outshot Northwest Nazarene 40-7 including 36-2 in the second half and the overtimes, but still managed just a tie as Crusader goalkeeper Tanya Zickefoose had 17 saves, just one off the GNAC single-game record.

The game was played in a 35 mile an hour wind that sometimes gusted to near 50. The contest was halted for about 20 minutes early in the second half by a power outage and was stopped again later in the half when the wind knocked over the goal at the north end.

Two people were then put behind each goal to hold down the goal supports for the rest of the contest.

Both goals were scored early in the second half. Three minutes into the period, Molly Shannon scored from seven yards out after midfielder Jenny Burton eluded a series of defenders to get a cross in from the left side.

NNU (3-11-4, 1-9-1), however, evened the score in the 62nd minute as Stacey Beckman hit a volley from the top of the penalty area that grazed the crossbar and dropped into the net to tie the game. That proved to be NNU's last shot.

November 4

Central Washington Extends Win Streak To Three

Three different players scored goals leading Central Washington to a 3-1 road win over Western Oregon Wednesday in Monmouth.

The Wildcats, who have scored 10 goals in their last three matches, improved to 8-9-1 overall and evened their GNAC record at 5-5-1. Western Oregon ended its season at 5-12-3 overall and 3-9-0 in GNAC play.

Serena Tomaso and Kaycie Hutchins each scored their fifth goal of the season, while freshman Carson McKole scored the eventual game-winner at the 26th minute.

Tomaso got the Wildcats on the board at the 15th minute off an assist from Brittany Franks, while Alex Jensen assisted on McKole's tally.

Western Oregon scored its only goal just 45 seconds after McKole's tally, with Marina Austin being credited with her second goal of the season.

Central extended the lead to 3-1 at the 60th minute as Hutchins, the conference co-leader in assists with eight, scored off a corner kick pass from defender Amanda Biggs.

Hutchins' 18 points on the season are the most by a Wildcat player since Rachel Casillas' 17 points during the 2003 season.

For the match, Central Washington finished with a 14-10 edge in shot attempts and a 6-2 margin in corner kicks. Amber Easterbrook had five saves in earning her 30th career goalkeeping victory.

October 31

Central Washington Upsets No. 6 Seattle Pacific

Amy Pate scored a goal early in each half as Central Washington upset nationally sixth-ranked Seattle Pacific 3-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday at the CWU Soccer Field.

The Wildcats (7-9-1, 4-5-1) snapped an eight-game losing streak against SPU, earning their first win against the Falcons since 2001. SPU still leads the all-time series 15-2-1.

The defending NCAA Division II champion Falcons (14-3-1) dropped to 7-2-1 in GNAC games. They trail Western Washington (7-1-2) by one point in the standings. Both have two games to play.

In other conference games, Saint Martin's and Montana State Billings posted shutout victories. The Saints (11-7-0, 7-4-0) clinched their first conference winning season and no worse than a tie for third place with a 2-0 win at Northwest Nazarene. MSUB (9-8-1), meanwhile leveled its conference record at 5-5 with a 3-0 win over Western Oregon.

In Central Washington's victory, Pate opened the scoring at 3:16 on the first shot of the game as a pass from Monique Cornier caromed off a SPU defender and freed Pate for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson. Pate placed a shot into the lower left corner, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

The sophomore forward found the net again just over five minutes after halftime. Quick passes in front of the SPU goal from Cornier and Kaycie Hutchins set up Pate for an easy score at 50:07.

The Wildcats' third goal came on a persistent effort by Serena Tomaso. She hit three consecutive, rapid-fire shots. Her first attempt bounced off the post, the second was deflected by Dickinson and the third went into the SPU goal at 74:45.

The Falcons got on the board with just under 10 minutes to play as Kelsey Jenkins delivered a pass to the left side of the goal that Brandi Hamre redirected into the netting at 80:38.

Hamre also tallied the Falcons' only goal in Wednesday's 1-1 tie against Western Washington.

Dickinson surrendered three goals for the first time in her career. The junior entered the contest having allowed just three goals in 12 games this season. She had seven saves for SPU which was outshot 18-11.

It was just the third time this season the Falcons have given up more shots than they've taken. Amber Easterbrook had five saves for the Wildcats.

Coming off a 2-0 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills (Oct. 24) and 1-1 tie with WWU (Oct. 28), SPU is now winless in three consecutive games for the first time in seventh-year coach Chuck Sekyra's tenure. The last similar slump came when they opened the 2002 season with two losses and a tie.

Saint Martin's outshot Northwest Nazarene 20-4 and got goals from Nicole Nedervelt in the 12th minute and Joanne Packer in the 78th minute in its victory. Packer scored on a header after taking a cross from Jill Webb.

Ashley Engel had three saves in posting her seventh shutout of the season. Tanya Zickefoose earned 10 saves for the Crusaders (3-11-3, 1-9-0).

Carly Valentine, Samantha Sandau and Kari Foreman each had a goal and Jaucelyn Richter and Chelsea Libby each had two assists in Montana State Billings' win.

MSUB, which outshot the Wolves (5-11-3, 3-8-0) by a 17-11 count, took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Valentine at 13:04 and Sandau at 20:58 before adding an insurance goal by Foreman at 85:29. Jordan Fenwick had three saves to earn the shutout.

October 29

Saints, Wolves Post Road Victories

Saint Martin's and Western Oregon earned shutout road victories in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer action Thursday.

The Saints (10-7-0, 6-4-0) took a firm grip on third place in the GNAC as Jill Webb scored two goals and also had an assist in a 3-0 win at Montana State Billings (8-8-1, 4-5-0).

Meanwhile, Rachelle Kliewer scored the game's only goal with 11:20 remaining as Western Oregon (5-10-3, 3-7-0) nipped Northwest Nazarene (3-10-3, 1-8-0) at Nampa by a 1-0 count.

Saint Martin's opened up a six-point lead over MSUB for third place in the conference with its win as Webb set up Julianna Sackeyfio for the only first-half goal at 38:12.

Webb then had an unassisted goal in the 49th minute and completed the scoring at 77:34 on a breakaway as Sackeyfio earned the assist.

The Saints outshot MSUB 16-10 in the contest. Ashley Engel had five saves in recording the shutout. Yellowjacket 'keeper Jordan Fenwick had seven saves.

Kliewer converted from 10 yards in the middle of the box, taking an assist up the middle from Kristen Sagami and beating NNU goalkeeper Tanya Zickefoose inside the far left post with a shot along the ground in Western Oregon's victory.

The game winning goal was Kliewer's eighth tally of the season. Zickefoose and WOU goalkeeper Brittney Rigtrup each collected seven saves.

Both teams fired 14 shots in the evenly-played match, which was contested under less than ideal conditions that featured rain and snow flurries throughout all 90 minutes of play.

October 28

Seattle Pacific, Western Washington Play to 1-1 Draw

Brandi Hamre scored just seven minutes into the game for Seattle Pacific, but Western Washington got the equalizer from Lucy Miller midway through the second half and the Falcons and Vikings settled for a 1-1 tie in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.

The outcome kept Western (10-4-3, 7-1-2) atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with 23 points, one point ahead of Seattle Pacific (14-2-1, 7-1-1).

SPU, however, can win the GNAC title and the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA playoffs by winning its final three games.

If the Falcons lose or tie in any of the three games, WWU, which is on a five-game unbeaten streak, could earn the automatic berth with two wins as it now controls the tiebreaker based on its 1-0-1 record in the season series.

Midfielder Jocelyn Charette started the Seattle Pacific scoring play by getting the ball forward to Hamre down the right wing side. Hamre gained control, got around a Vikings defender and sent a 25-yard shot floating toward the left post.

The ball eluded Western goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent and landed inside the back left corner midway up the net just 7:03 into the game for Hamre's third goal of the year.

The Vikings tied the game on Miller's goal at the 65:51 mark. Under defensive pressure from SPU, Kelly Irving kept control of a throw-in near the goal line on the right side of the net and got a pass across the goalmouth that was just out of Falcon goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson's reach.

Miller got the ball directly in front of the left post and booted it into the open net.

Irving's assist gave her a GNAC-leading eight on the season, and was the 26th of her career, tying a school record held by Cindy Gordon for 25 years (1981-84)

“It was classic Irving, she had the ball in the corner with three defenders on her and got the cross off,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.

Seattle Pacific finished the contest with a 17-14 shot advantage. Broadbent had seven saves while Dickinson had six for SPU.

Broadbent's final save came with about five minutes left in overtime on a shot by Janie Wurth from 25 yards.

Both coaches agreed it was one of the better saves they'd seen in a college game.

“The ball swerved the wrong way and Kylie dove back across to stop it." Connell said. "The stands just went silent for a second.”

“At 1-0 we had a chance to put that game away. And then at the end their keeper makes a great save,” said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra.

“That's one of the better saves I've seen in a college soccer game, a ball bouncing like that off her forearm. I thought that ball would skip in still. How does a wrist keep that ball out of the net?”

Dickinson was also stellar in goal for SPU. One of her saves came in the 16th minute when she stopped a point-blank shot by Molly Shannon from no more than a yard in front.

October 24

Seattle Pacific Upset by Dominguez Hills

Cal State Dominguez Hills scored two second-half goals in upsetting Seattle Pacific 2-0 in a NCAA Division II West Region women's soccer game Saturday night at Carson, Calif.

In a pair of conference games, Western Washington beat Montana State Billings 3-0 to reclaim the lead in the GNAC over SPU and Central Washington blanked Northwest Nazarene 4-0.

Makenzie Pedrotti headed in a cross in the 60th minute and Cal State Dominguez Hills' Britney Vance added an insurance goal with 3:27 remaining in regulation to beat the Falcons (14-2-0).

Vance beat two defenders and lofted a shot over SPU goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson that carried just inside the far post for the clincher. Pedrotti's goal was set up by Jessica Murphy with a cross from the left flank.

The first goal ended Dickinson's season-long scoreless streak in goal at 869 minutes, 5 seconds. Over two seasons, Dickinson, who had seven saves in Saturday's contest, had not allowed a goal in 1,012 minutes, 12 seconds.

"They scored a great goal (for the 1-0 lead)," SPU coach Chuck Sekyra said. "We came back and there just seemed to be a lid on the net. I couldn't believe how many sitters we missed and we hit the post. Then they finished it off when we pushed some players forward at the end."

The Toros outshot the Falcons 17-15. Alyssa Congdon made eight saves as SPU, which was outshot for the first time this season, was shutout for the first time in 33 games dating back to a 1-0 loss at Western Washington on Sept. 20, 2008.

Western Washington (10-4-2, 7-1-1), which has won four straight, opened up a one-point lead over Seattle Pacific with its home victory against MSU Billings (8-7-1, 4-4-0). The Vikings play SPU at Interbay Stadium Wednesday.

“We had lots of energy to start the game and got the other team on its heels,” said Western coach Travis Connell.  “That's a great recipe for victory to be able to play in the other team's half.”

WWU midfielder Kelly Irving opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a free kick from 24 yards.

The Vikings then extended the lead with two goals in a span of 2:30 late in the first half.  In the 42nd minute, a sliding finish by Justina MacDowell of a low cross by Lucy Miller made the score 2-0.

Then in the 44th minute, Joana Houplin got Western's third goal, finishing from eight yards to cap a slick passing combination that also involved Kasey Hostetler and Claire Morgan.

Viking goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent made five saves in registering her eighth shutout, matching her total of last season, and the 16th of her career.

Since losing 5-0 Oct. 8 at UC San Diego, Western Washington has outscored its last four opponents by a combined 8-0 margin.

Kelsy Villegas scored two goals and Brittany Franks and Carson McKole had one each in Central Washington's victory.

Villegas, who leads the Wildcats (6-9-1, 3-5-1) with five goals, scored on a penalty kick in the 41st minute and also scored in the 81st minute off an assist by Kaycie Hutchins.

Serena Tomaso's corner kick in the 23rd minute led to a goal by Brittany Franks for CWU's first goal. McKole completed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 87:10.

CWU outshot the Crusaders 18-5. Amber Easterbrook had three saves in posting her 20th career shutout. Tanya Zickefoose had eight saves for the Crusaders (3-9-3, 1-7-0).

October 21

Seattle Pacific Wins on Hat Trick by Charette

Jocelyn Charette scored the first three goals increasing her team-leading total to 11 and propelling fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 4-0 victory over Montana State Billings (8-6-1, 4-3-0) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium Wednesday.

Charette recorded the 13th hat trick in SPU women's soccer history. That was her second of the season as she tallied a trio of goals against Grand Canyon on Sept. 11. The senior forward has scored in each of the last three games with six goals during that span.

Charette's first goal came at 32:16. She scored two more times less than six minutes apart in the 59th and 64th minutes. Brandi Hamre capped the scoring at 72:07 with a looping 20-yard flick into an open goal.

The Falcons (14-1) improved to 7-1 in conference play to take over the first-place position from Western Washington (6-1-1) and set-up a 1-2 showdown next Wednesday in Seattle.

Reigning NCAA Division II national champion SPU and the defending GNAC titlist Vikings square off on in a 7 p.m. game at Interbay Stadium.

WWU is the only team to register a win during the last two seasons against the Falcons, who have a combined 36-0-2 record against everybody else. The Vikings beat SPU 3-2 on Oct. 3 in Bellingham, where they were 1-0 victors last season.

Maddie Dickinson, the nation's leading goalkeeper, made two saves en route to her eighth shutout and the Falcons' 14th overall. SPU has outscored opponents by a combined 39-3 margin.

Dickinson has not allowed a goal while playing 810 minutes this season. Dating back to last season, she has a current school-record scoreless streak of 953 minutes, 7 seconds.

Jordan Fenwick was credited with four saves for the Yellowjackets, who were outshot 17-9.

October 18

Western Washington Nips Western Oregon 1-0

Forward Molly Shannon scored the game's only goal in the 58th minute lifting Western Washington to a 1-0 victory over Western Oregon (4-9-3, 2-6-0) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Sunday at the WOU Soccer Field.

It was the Vikings' third straight win, all of them shutouts. They improved to 9-4-2 overall and moved one point ahead of Seattle Pacific in the conference standings at 6-1-1. SPU is 6-1-0 and has a "game in hand."

“We played a really good second half,” said WWU coach Travis Connell “We were able to make some adjustments at halftime and play a little differently than we normally so, and those adjustments really paid off.  We dominated the second half, created a lot of chances and got a good goal.”

The lone goal came when midfielder Kelly Irving beat three players down the right side and crossed to Kasey Hostetler, who got the ball to the far post where Shannon tapped it in from five yards.

It was the seventh assist this season for Irving, putting her all alone atop the league leaders in that category.

“Kelly ( Irving ) was definitely the Player of the Game,” Connell said.  “She was on fire, especially in the second half with her attacking prowess in the corner.”

The shutout was the seventh of the season for Viking goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent, who made three saves in lowering her goals against average to 0.81.

The Vikings had big advantages in shots, 26-7, and corner kicks, 5-0, however WOU goalkeeper Brittney Rigtrup kept it close making 10 saves.

October 17

Falcons Win 7-0 To Take Over First

Jocelyn Charette and Savanna Hanson each scored two goals and Maddie Dickinson set a GNAC record for most consecutive minutes without allowing a goal as nationally fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific crushed Northwest Nazarene 7-0 Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Nampa.

The win also enabled SPU (13-1-0, 6-1-0) to take over first place from Western Washington in the GNAC standings. The Falcons have 18 points, two more than the Vikings (5-1-1).

In Saturday's only other game, Sant Martin's (8-7-0) leveled its conference record at 4-4 with a 2-1 defeat of Central Washington (5-9-1, 2-5-1). The win moved the Saints into a tie for third-place with Montana State Billings (4-4-0). Both teams have 12 points though MSUB has "two games in hand."

Dickinson played the first 45 minutes in SPU's 13th shutout of the season and had one save as she stretched her season-long scoreless streak to 720 minutes. Going back to the end of the 2008 season, she hasn't allowed a goal in 863 minutes and seven seconds, breaking the GNAC record of 835 set by SPU's Jennifer Hull in 2003.

The seven-goal margin was the Falcons' biggest since last year's visit to NNU when they won 9-0. They have a 22-0 scoring advantage over the last three meetings with the Crusaders and lead the all-time series 16-1.

In addition to her two goals Charette also had an assist as SPU outshot the Crusaders (3-8-3, 1-6-0) 21-7 in the contest. Jesslyn Rahm Kellerman had two saves in the second half in combining with Dickinson for the shutout.

Saint Martin's scored twice in a 25 second span of the 16th minute and then held off Central Washington, which outshot the Saints 18-11 and claimed all 10 of the game's corner kicks.

Jill Webb scored at 15:18 - her seventh of the season - and Joanne Packer made it 2-0 at 15:43. CWU finally got on the board at 82:55 on a goal by Kaycie Hutchins.

Though CWU did launch 18 shots only five were on goal as SMU goalkeeper Emilee Eilefson had just three saves. CWU keeper Amber Easterbrook made two stops.

October 16

Montana State Billings Loses 2-1 To Carroll

Two first half goals by Carroll College (10-4-1) propelled the Saints to a 2-1 non-conference victory at Montana State Billings Friday.

The Yellowjackets (8-5-1) scored a late goal, but a furious shooting barrage came up short for the Yellowjackets in the final minutes.  For the contest MSUB had 10 more shots (17-7) and took all nine of the game's corners.

“Some days you dominate the possession, some days you dominate the statistics and we did that today,” MSUB head coach Don Trentham said.  “Unfortunately we didn't get the result.”

Freshman Jaucelyn Richter took six of MSUB's 17 shots and also earned an assist on its lone goal as Carly Valentine converted a corner kick from Richter in the 83rd minute.

Carroll scored both of its goals in the first half. Kristine Sowers fired a long pass from the midfield stripe to a streaking Meghan O'Connell who flipped it over the head of MSUB goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick for her 13th goal of the season at 24:12.

Near the end of the half, Carroll moved the ball up field in transition off a corner kick by MSUB with some nice passing.  Lauren Cacopardo was fouled in the box setting up a penalty kick at the 43:39 mark.  Carroll's Tayt Ellison took the penalty kick and converted for a 2-0 lead.

October 14

Western Washington, Seattle Pacific Post 2-0 Wins

Western Washington and Seattle Pacific each posted 2-0 conference wins Wednesday staying on a collision course for their Oct. 28 game at Interbay Stadium which could go a long ways in deciding the GNAC's automatic berth in the NCAA playoffs.

The Vikings (8-4-2, 5-1-1) defeated arch-rival Central Washington (5-8-1, 2-4-1) to stay one point ahead of the Falcons (12-1-0, 5-1-0), who earned a road win at Lacey against Saint Martin's (7-7-0, 3-4-0).

In a non-conference contest, Kari Foreman had two goals and Jaucelyn Richter had two assists to lead Montana State Billings to a 4-0 win at Rocky Mountain.

Forwards Molly Shannon and Emily Frankland scored second-half goals as the Vikings won their second consecutive game following a pair of losses.

“We overcame a lot in this match,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.  “We had two starting center midfielders get hurt in the first 10 minutes and not return, so we had people playing out of position.  And we had just gotten back from Phoenix then ridden a bus over here, so we didn't have a great first half.

“But we turned it around in the second half, showed a lot of character, took control of the game and scored two good goals.”

Shannon scored WWU's first goal in the 53rd minute off a corner kick.  Kelly Irving served it to Lucy Miller, who passed it to the far post where Shannon tapped it in.

Frankland's goal, her team-leading sixth of the campaign, came in the 69th minute.  Justina MacDowell beat a defender at midfield and played a through ball down the left side behind the defense to Frankland, who slotted it on the ground from 12 yards past the goalkeeper.

WWU had a narrow 15-14 shot advantage in the contest as goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent made three saves to record her sixth shutout of the year and the 14th of her career. CWU keeper Amber Easterbrook had a season-high eight saves.

“We're defending so much better these last two games,” Connell said.  “We're so much more organized defensively, and that's really helped us.”

At Lacey, midfielder Jocelyn Charette scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, then set up an insurance tally by midfielder Kelsey Jenkins and Maddie Dickinson earned her seventh shutout of the year in Seattle Pacific's win.

Charette took a pass from freshman defender Andrea Chan, beat a defender and put her shot inside the far left post at the 22:28 mark.

SPU, which had a 17-11 shot advantage, added an insurance goal in the second half as Jenkins took a cross from Charette and beat Saints goalkeeper Ashley Engel from eight yards away at 75:49.

Dickinson was credited with six saves in stretching her season-long scoreless streak to 675 minutes. Going back to the end of the 2008 season, she hasn't allowed a goal in 818 minutes and seven seconds, 17 short of the GNAC record of 835 set by SPU's Jennifer Hull in 2003.

Foreman's two goals propelled the MSUB (8-4-1) to its victory. “I thought we played a complete game from start to finish, Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham said.  “We looked good in the attack, good in the back and our corners were spot on today.”

The Yellowjackets dominated the game from start to finish outshooting Rocky 20-7. MSUB, which had a 13-4 edge in shots on goal, tied a season-high with 10 corner kicks, converting two of them into goals.

Foreman scored in the 13th and 24th minutes as MSUB, which also got a goal from freshmen Jennifer Larsen in the 21st minute, jumped on top 3-0 in the opening half.

Larsen's goal, her eighth score of the year, came after receiving a corner kick from Chelsea Libby. MSUB converted another corner in the second half as Andrea Baytaluke converted a corner from Richter. Richter also had an assist on MSUB's third goal.

MSUB goalkeeper, Jordan Fenwick, tallied four saves in posting her second shutout of the year.

Wolves Win On Goal by Okuma

Chelsy Okuma scored in the 85th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and give Western Oregon a 3-2 win over Oregon Tech in a non-conference game Tuesday at the WOU Soccer Field.

Okuma hit a high arching shot over the goalie's head from the top of the box after receiving a drop pass from Cori Young for the winning goal.

"Okuma played better than anyone else on the field today," WOU head coach Rod Fretz noted. "She was creative with the ball and has a knack for the game. She is such a harder work and it is evident each day."

All five goals in the game came in the second half. After OIT took a 1-0 lead at 51:33 on a goal by Brooke Cole, WOU, which outshot the Owls 24-7, grabbed the lead by scoring twice on an unassisted goal by Kristie Adkins at 59:31 and on a penalty kick by Sam Slezak at 64:20.

Western Washington Halts Short Skid, Beats Grand Canyon

Midfielder Kelly Irving and forward Claire Morgan scored second-half goals from 22 and 32 yards, respectively, as Western Washington blanked Grand Canyon 2-0 in a NCAA Division II West Region game Monday at Phoenix.

The Vikings, who snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 7-4-2.  Grand Canyon fell to 5-6-2.

“We played a quality match,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.  “It's a difficult environment here, much hotter than we're used to, but the players stayed really focused and played really good defense.”

“The goals we scored were two of our best this year.  The goalkeeper didn't even move on the free kick by Morgan.  Both were really struck well.”

Irving scored in the 51st minute, striking the ball off a rebound into the left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.  Morgan's goal in the 77th minute came off a free kick that went over the wall of defenders and over the goalkeeper's head.

It was the second goal in three games for Morgan, who had not scored in Western's first 10 contests after being one of the team's top two scorers in each of her first two seasons.

The Vikings were outshot 13-10, but goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent made four saves in notching her fifth shutout of the year and the 13th during her three-year career.

Connell also praised the play of defender Brynn Regan. “Brynn was fantastic today with good energy and leadership back there,” Connell said.

It was the fourth straight win for the Vikings over Grand Canyon .  They now hold a 6-2-0 series advantage.

Hutchins added an insurance goal in the second half scoring from 15 yards out off an assist from defender Amanda Biggs.

At the other end of the field, Easterbrook and the CWU defense had a light day, holding Northwest Nazarene (3-7-3, 1-5-0) to just two shot attempts.

Only a second-half attempt by Kim Bowen, which came just 36 seconds before Hutchins' goal, made it on goal against Easterbrook, who posted her 19th career shutout.

Central outshot NNU by a 13-2 count and had eight corner kicks to the Crusaders' three.

MSUB, Western Oregon Win On Penalty Kicks

Jennifer Larsen and Rachelle Kliewer scored the game-winning goals on penalty kicks to lead Montana State Billings and Western Oregon, respectively, to Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer victories Thursday.

Larson scored on a penalty kick to snap a 1-1 tie in the 83rd minute as Montana State Billings (7-4-1, 4-2-0) defeated Northwest Nazarene 2-1 at Billings.

Meanwhile, Western Oregon beat Central Washington 2-0 getting a penalty kick goal by Kliewer and a 10-save shutout performance from goalkeeper Brittney Rigtrup.

Meanwhile, Western Washington was shutout by UC San Diego 5-0 in a game matching NCAA West Region ranked teams. UCSD came in ranked fourth and the Vikings were seventh.

At Billings, Northwest Nazarene (3-6-3, 1-4-0) tied up its game against MSUB 1-1 on an unassisted goal by Marie Smith two minutes prior to Larson's game-winner. The game's first goal came in the first half at 17:40 as Kari Foreman converted a cross from Lauren Anderson just outside the 18.

Smith's tying goal came off a scrum in the middle of the field following a NNU corner kick, just one of two for the Crusaders. MSUB was awarded 10 corners.

The Yellowjackets also dominated the shot category, taking 17 compared to just six by the Crusaders. NNU goalie Lauren Delameter had five saves while Jordan Fenwick had three for MSUB.

The win moved MSUB into a tie for second-place in the GNAC with Seattle Pacific (4-1-0). Both schools have 12 points, one behind Western Washington (4-1-1). The Falcons, however, have a "game in hand" over both the Vikings and 'Jackets.

At Ellensburg, Kliewer's goal came in the 28th minute. The Wolves (3-8-3, 2-5-0) also scored at 32:18 on a goal by Chelsy Okuma following a corner which was cleared by the Wildcat defense.

Okuma, however, then launched a shot from 35 yards out that bounced into the goal box and ultimately past a diving CWU goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook.

Central Washington (4-7-1, 1-3-1) dominated the action despite sustaining its seventh loss of the season. The Wildcats outshot the Wolves 22-5 and had seven more corners (9-2).

Rigtrup, however, posted a rare feat, getting a double-digit save total during a shutout. Four other shots either hit the post or crossbar. Easterbrook was credited with two saves for the Wildcats.

At San Diego, forward Shelby Wong scored three goals leading nationally 14th ranked UCSD (10-2-0) past Western Washington (6-4-2) at RIMAC Field. The Tritons have won their last five games and eight of their last nine.

Wong's first two goals came just 34 seconds apart.  In the 12th minute, she finished a cross with a first-time strike from eight yards with assists going to Anne Wethe and Jessica Wi.

Then Wong took a long pass from Wethe, beat two defenders near the top of the penalty area and fired a shot into the upper right corner, putting the Tritons up 2-0.

Wong, who entered the game with just three goals on the season, completed the hat trick in the 61st minute with a blast from the top of the penalty area off a feed from Gabi Hernandez.

Sarah McTigue gave UCSD, which outshot WWU 19-9, a 4-0 lead in the 64th minute, working a quick exchange with Wi and finishing a shot inside the far post.  Alexa Enlow concluded the scoring in the 81st minute, heading home a Remy Hitt corner kick.

Jenkins Gets Game-Winner For Seattle Pacific

Midfielder Kelsey Jenkins converted a well-placed pass from Amanda Chan into the only goal of the game and goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson picked up her sixth shutout of the season as Seattle Pacific got back onto the women's soccer winning track with a 1-0 non conference victory against Brigham Young-Hawaii on Tuesday at Interbay Stadium.

The fifth-ranked Falcons (11-1-0 overall) extended their three-year home unbeaten streak to 39 games (37-0-2), and bounced back from Saturday's 3-2 loss at Western Washington.

Chan, a freshman defender, started SPU's scoring play by intercepting the ball about 40 yards up from the goal on the left wing  side.

She sent a through ball toward the right side of the penalty area, where Jenkins ran onto it, and beat Seasiders goalkeeper Becky Ploeger one-on-one from 12 yards away at 63:35 for her third goal of the season.

Dickinson, the nation's leading goalkeeper with perfect 0.00 goals-against average, has kept her six opponents off the board for 585 minutes. She hasn't allowed a goal in 728 minutes and seven seconds dating back to last season.

The Seasiders, an NCAA tournament team last season and a member of the Pacific West Conference, fell to 5-2-0.

Saint Martin's Ends Viking Streak at 21

Jenny Baker scored the game-winning goal late in the first half as Saint Martin's upset Western Washington 2-1 Monday snapping the Vikings 21-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference unbeaten streak.

Western Washington (6-3-2, 4-1-1) came into the game with a seven-game overall unbeaten streak (6-0-1) after ending Seattle Pacific's GNAC record 27-game unbeaten streak Saturday at Bellingham.

The Vikings remained in first-place in the GNAC with 13 points, though Seattle Pacific has 12 points and now has a "game in hand."

“After our emotional win Saturday, we didn't quite have the same energy today,” said WWU coach Travis Connell .  “We played much better in the second half, but they did a good job of organizing their defense and keeping us from getting that tying goal.”

All three goals came during a span of 1:50 near the end of the first half.

Saint Martin 's (7-5-0, 3-3-0) got on the scoreboard first as Shannon White served up a free kick to Kayci Donatelli who scored from 10 yards out at the 42:02 mark.

Twenty-eight seconds later, Western tied the score at 1-1 as the Vikings put the ball behind the defense on the left side to Bryn Gibson.  She played a cross on the ground to Claire Morgan, who finished from three yards.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead late in the 44th minute as Baker found the net from five yards after receiving a pass from Jill Webb. Western Washington outshot Saint Martin's 16-10 in the contest. Saint goalie Ashley Engel, however, made seven saves.

“We are ecstatic with the play of the women today," SMU coach Rob Walker said. "We created some great chances and were able to score a couple of good goals."

Western Washington had won 18 league contests and tied three others since their last GNAC setback, 2-0 to Seattle Pacific on Oct. 17, 2007.

October 3

Western Washington Ends Seattle Pacific Streaks

Forward Lucy Miller scored the game-winning goal and Kelly Irving had a pair of assists as Western Washington defeated Seattle Pacific 3-2 Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game, snapping the Falcons GNAC-record 27-game unbeaten streak.

Elsewhere in the GNAC, freshman Kelsy Villegas scored the first two goals of her career as Central Washington blanked Montana State Billings 3-0 at Billings earning its first conference victory of the season.

Meanwhile at Lacey, Saint Martin's (6-5-0, 2-3-0) edged Western Oregon 1-0.

Miller scored in the 82nd minute enabling Western Washington (6-2-2, 4-0-1) to extend its unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1) and move one point ahead of SPU in the conference standings.

The Vikings, the defending GNAC champions, have not lost in 21 consecutive conference contents (18-0-3), a streak that started in 2007.

The Falcons (10-1-0, 4-1-0), who entered the game having not allowed a goal this season, had a NCAA season-best 21-game winning streak snapped. They had gone 26-0-1 since their last loss, a 1-0 decision to the Vikings on Sept. 20, 2008 at Bellingham.

“Seattle Pacific is a great team,” said WWU coach Travis Connell. “These are the kind of games our players love.  They love big games against big teams and that's what makes us dangerous.”

The Vikings had a 2-1 lead at halftime despite attacking into a stiff wind in the opening half, but Seattle Pacific tied the score in the 67th minute, as midfielder Kelsey Jenkins took a pass in the center of the field, dribbled 25 yards and fed a ball through to freshman Megan Lindsay, who held off a Western defender and finished low from 10 yards.

But Miller got the game winner with under nine minutes to play, taking a pass from Irving and hitting a shot from 25 yards that went off the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Jessie Rahm Kellerman before settling in the right side of the net.

“I saw it come to me, it went right through the referee's legs,” said Miller.  “I was outside the box with no one in front of me, so I just hit it hard.”

Western's Emily Frankland opened the scoring just under five minutes in. Irving played a ball into traffic near the right post, and Frankland got to the ball and knocked it in ending Seattle Pacific's 11-game shutout streak, the fourth longest in NCAA Division II history. It was the first goal the Falcons had allowed in 1,048 minutes and six seconds.

Amanda Johnson evened the score for the Falcons in the 11th minute, chesting down a ball 30 yards from goal and hitting an audacious lob into the right corner.

Western regained the lead in the 33rd minute.  Frankland fed Bryn Gibson down the left side, and Gibson hit a cross through the penalty area.  Molly Shannon met the cross with a volley from 12 yards out and drilled it into the left side of the net, giving the Vikings a 2-1 halftime advantage.

“This wasn't a game about tactics, the girls just played their best soccer today,” said Connell.  “We worked hard, created chances and our forwards did the job when we needed it.”

The Vikings are 2-1-1 in their last four games with the Falcons, getting a win and a tie in GNAC play last season before suffering a 1-0 overtime loss in the NCAA II Far West Regional Final at Kirksville , Mo.

Seattle Pacific, which twice overcame one-goal deficits in the game, had not yielded three goals in a game since they lost 3-0 to UC San Diego on Nov. 4, 2006 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

“I loved how we battled back in the second half. I thought we were going to pull that one out and was proud of how our kids performed in the second half," SPU coach Chuck Sekyra said.

At Billings, Villegas broke up a scoreless deadlock early in the second half scoring after taking a pass from Serena Tomaso at 53:36 in Central Washington's victory. Five minutes later Kaycie Hutchins made it 2-0 on a shot from the left side from 22 yards out.

Villegas added an insurance goal at 74:12 scoring from 15 yards away on the left side of the 18.

Though the Wildcats (4-6-1, 1-2-1) won by three goals, shots were virtually even. Central took one more than the Yellowjackets (10-9). MSUB (6-4-1, 3-2-0), however had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Amber Easterbrook had five saves in recording the shutout, the 17th of her career.

Nicole Nedervelt converted a rebound for the game's only goal in the 77th minute in Saint Martin's win over Western Oregon (2-8-3, 1-5-0).

The Saints finished the contest with a 12-7 edge in shots and a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. Ashley Engel had three saves for the Saints, while Kelsey Blachly stopped six shots for the Wolves.

WWU, which hosts SPU Saturday, has not lost in its last 20 league counters (17-0-3). Its last conference setback was a 2-0 loss to Seattle Pacific on Oct. 17, 2007. NNU fell to 3-5-3 with the loss. The Crusaders are 1-3 in the conference.

“We were able to stick with our game plan and wear them down in the second half, get a little more space and finally got in behind,” said Viking coach Travis Connell .  “We really accomplished everything we wanted to on this trip.”

Western Washington got on the scoreboard first in the 63rd minute when midfielder Jenny Barton beat her defender at midfield and got the ball to forward Emily Frankland, whose shot from eight yards glanced off the right post into the corner of the goal. It was Frankland's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

In the 89th minute, midfielder Kasey Hostetler stole a pass at the top of the box, got by a defender and her shot from 15 yards deflected off the goalkeeper into the net.

WWU goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent, who entered the game ranked eighth nationally in goals against average (0.23), had two saves in notching her fourth shutout of the season.

The Vikings had a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Five different players scored goals and five different players had assists in Seattle Pacific's win over Western Oregon (2-7-3, 1-4-0). Megan Lindsay and Kelsey Jenkins had one of each.

Jenkins opened the scoring six minutes after halftime with a low 12-yard shot off a pass from Lindsay, who netted the second goal eight minutes later on a header from 10 yards.

Savanna Hanson, Abbie Knox and Brittany Langdon then added insurance goals in quick succession in the 72nd, 74th and 79th minutes as SPU outshot Western Oregon 23-7, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.

Amanda Johnson and Charette both scored second-half goals in Seattle Pacific's win as the Falcons (9-0-0, 3-0-0) extended their win streak to 20 and their GNAC record unbeaten streak to 26 (25-0-1). SPU is also unbeaten in its last 37 home games (35-0-2).

SPU has kept its opponents off the scoreboard for the last 953 minutes, 7 seconds. Goalkeeper Jesslyn Rahm Kellerman picked up her fourth shutout of the season extending her personal scoreless streak to 416 minutes, 59 seconds though she wasn't called upon to make a save.

SPU, which outshot Central 11-7 and had a 5-1 corner kick advantage, grabbed the lead on a goal by Johnson in the 53rd minute as midfielder Kelsey Jenkins started the play with a free kick about 30 yards up from the goal line on the left side.

She lofted the ball deep into the penalty area. Charette got a head to it at the far post, and it landed right in front of Johnson, who poked it from a yard away.

Charette made it 2-0 at 80:55 as freshman forward Megan Lindsay sent the ball toward the right side, and Charette caught up with outside of the box.

She took it into the box, and standing almost parallel to the goal, fired a shot from 10 yards away that found its way into the net just inside the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Almost all the scoring in the WOU-NNU game came in the first half as Northwest Nazarene (3-4-3, 1-2-0) opened up a 3-2 lead at halftime.

Western Oregon (2-6-3, 1-3-0), however, tied it in the first 45 seconds of the second half on a goal by Kym Witmer.

The teams then played almost 57 minutes before Petersen got the game-winner after taking a pass from Witmer.

Petersen was able to beat NNU goalie Tanya Zickefoose to the ball, giving her an unblocked net. She subsequently kicked it in from the top right corner of the box.

“Kym (Witmer) got a really good ball in the middle and she just played a perfect ball through and led me; it couldn't have been better,” Petersen said.

WOU, which got a goal and a pair of assists from Jessica Hicks, outshot NNU 16-8. Brittney Rigtrup played the final 57:29 in the net and didn't allow a goal. She had one save in earning the victory.

Western Washington Edges SFU In Overtime

Midfielder Kelly Irving broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 97th minute as Western Washington defeated Simon Fraser 1-0 in overtime in a non-league women's soccer contest Tuesday night at Terry Fox Field on the SFU campus.

The Vikings improved to 4-2-2, running their unbeaten string to five games (4-0-1).  They have allowed just one goal during that stretch. Simon Fraser, ranked No.7 nationally in the NAIA, fell to 6-2-1.

Irving's goal came on a defensive miscue by the Clan in the overtime period.  She stole the ball from two SFU defenders, dribbled back to her left, and fired a shot from six yards to beat outstretched Clan goalkeeper Cassie Newbrook, who made eight saves in the game.

Irving nearly scored with just two minutes remaining in regulation, finding herself one-on-one with Newbrook, who made a great save on Irving 's shot from 12 yards.

“This was a really good victory for us,” said Western coach Travis Connell , “to go on the road and to dominate the game the way we did.  We put them under a lot of pressure and eventually it paid off with the turnover in the back and the goal in overtime.”

The Vikings had a 14-8 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

Western goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) made four saves in posting her second straight overtime shutout.

Yturbe cut the margin to 2-1 in the 38th minute, converting a cross from Stacey Beckman, and then tied the score at 2-2 in the 43rd minute, controlling a deflection off MSUB keeper Jordan Fenwick and finding the upper right corner.

NNU's Marie Smith gave the Crusaders their first lead of the match in the 53rd minute with an unassisted goal.  Smith took the ball into the left side of the box, beat two 'Jacket defenders one-on-one and then blasted a strike inside the far post.

MSUB, however, forced overtime in the 69th minute as Jennifer Larsen bent a high shot from 20 yards out over the NNU defense and inside the upper corner.

Montana State Billings finished the contest with a 19-14 shot advantage and a 5-1 edge in corners. Both goalies - Fenwick for MSUB and Tanya Zickefoose for NNU - had eight saves.

At Seattle, forward Amanda Johnson factored into all three goals, scoring the first and assisting on the next two as Seattle Pacific extended its unbeaten streak to a GNAC-record 25 games (24-0-1). The Falcons set the old record of 24 in 2005.

Johnson scored an unassisted goal on a 35-yard arching shot in the seventh minute, then earned assists on goals by freshmen Megan Lindsey at 10:05 and Abbie Knox at 82:20. For all three players it was their first goals of the season.

At Bellingham, Western Washington (3-2-2, 2-0-1), which is undefeated in its last four contests, extended its conference unbeaten streak to 19 games with the 0-0 tie. CWU is now 3-5-1, including 0-1-1 in the GNAC.

WWU had a 20-7 shot advantage, including 9-0 in the first half and a 5-1 edge in overtime. However, it couldn't get the ball past Amber Easterbrook, who had four saves in recording her 17th career shutout, two this season.

“We played hard, we defended well and we created chances, but we were unlucky,” said Western coach Travis Connell .  “Some games are like that, but we gave ourselves a chance to win, and that's what we want to do every game.”

Western had a chance to score in the third minute as a header by midfielder Kasey Hostetler seemed headed for goal only to bounce off another Viking.

The Vikings also had the best opportunity in overtime when a shot by Bryn Gibson from a tight angle on the left rolled just past the far post.

Western goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent earned her second shutout since returning to the lineup, making two saves.  The Vikings have allowed just one goal in the three games Broadbent has played.

Cornier, who entered Wednesday's contest with just two career points -- both of which were assists last season, spun her defender and then beat Northwest goalkeeper Jessica Kane at the six-minute mark to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. In another West Region game, Cal Poly Pomona defeated Central Washington 1-0.

MSUB leveled its record at 1-1 with its victory, while Dixie fell to 1-1. A year ago, Dixie handed the Yellowjackets an early-season 4-0 loss.

“Our team showed a lot of character in beating a good Dixie State team on the road,” MSUB head coach Don Trentham said.  “I was really proud of the way we took the game to Dixie State early and when they tied the game we didn't get down on ourselves – we found a way to get the win.”

MSUB's Jennifer Larsen scored her first collegiate goal as she was on the receiving end of a Chelsea Libby pass and a deflection off a corner kick for a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute.

Dixie State had two good looks after Sandau's goal, but the Yellowjacket defense was up to the task.

MSUB goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick stopped a Jessica Michie shot and a Camille Peterson shot went high.  Fenwick ended the game with five saves.

Western, ranked No.12 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II national preseason poll, is now 0-1-1 on the season.  CSU Monterey Bay, which was playing its third game in four days, is 0-2-1.

The Vikings had taken a 3-2 lead in the 67th minute as they worked a short corner to perfection. Midfielder Jenny Barton finished high to the far corner from 15 yards out on the left side after a feed from Stephanie Janigo.

But the Otters evened the score with 4:02 remaining.  Off a free kick, a shot by Sarah Alderson hit the post and after a mad scramble in the goal mouth, Ashley Rohde poked the ball in from four yards out.

Western had the best chance in overtime, but forward Lucy Miller's shot from a tight angle on the right slid just past the far post.

“Give (Cal State Monterey Ba ) credit,” said Western coach Travis Connell .  “It was their third game in four days, but they played with more energy and heart than we did.”

CSU Monterey Bay took the lead in the 13th minute as Alyssa Matheson took a short pass from Alderson and hit a ball into the upper right corner of the net from 30 yards out.  Western equalized just three minutes later, as forward Emily Frankland had an uncontested tap-in after a shot by midfielder Kelly Irving hit the post.

The Otters regained the lead in the 24th minute as Carrie LaPonza headed home a Rohde corner, but the Vikings equalized again in the 36th minute to put the halftime score at 2-2.  Molly Shannon got the goal, which was set up after Joana Houplin played a ball through to Justina MacDowell.

The Vikings had a 20-11 advantage in shots, but CSU Monterey Bay goalkeeper Andrea Davis made eight saves.   Jamie Arthurs had two saves for Western.

“We made mistakes, but more than anything, we didn't have enough energy,” Connell said. “We have players on this team who have been known for their commitment, but they haven't brought it in the first two games.”

Northwest Nazarene Wins On Penalty Kick

Marie Smith converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute to give Northwest Nazarene a 3-2 non-conference victory over Eastern Oregon Saturday afternoon at the NNU Soccer Field.

Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific also earned victories by identical 1-0 scores. The Saints edged Cal State Monterey Bay 1-0 on a goal by Kelcy Ware, while Hannah Masson scored the game's only goal at 87:32 in SPU's 1-0 win over San Francisco State.

At Saint George, Utah, Cal State San Bernardino scored the first two goals of the game in a 2-1 win over Montana State Billings as the Yellowjackets lost their season opener. Central Washington, meanwhile, lost 2-1 in overtime at UC San Diego.

Northwest Nazarene (1-0-1) was awarded its penalty attempt after Eastern Oregon (0-1-0) was whistled for a hand-ball inside the top of the box. Smith's goal finished inside the right post, just past EOU goalkeeper Allison Seymour's diving save attempt.

"Overall, I was proud of the way we played today," NNU head coach Jamie Lindvall said.  "We showed some good character and composure in the second half and finished with a solid performance."

NNU, which outshot the Mountaineers 20-5, struck the opening goal in the 13th minute when Kendra Courcy took a free kick from 35 yards out on the right side.  Her kick bounced in traffic directly in front of the goalmouth, sliding past EOU keeper Kalah Minter.

The Mountaineers answered with two goals in a nine-minute stretch, both from Tennly Paul-Bowden. The Crusaders then tied the match at 2-2 just four minutes later when Sarah Staropoli netted her first collegiate goal, firing a free kick from 30 yards out on the left side past Minter.

A free kick from Jill Webb set up Ware's game-winning goal in Saint Martin's victory at 62:11 as the Saints leveled their record at 1-1.

Saint Martin's dominated the action outshooting Monterey Bay 13-2. Ashley Engel had one save as SMU recorded just its fifth shutout in the three-year history of the program.

Masson re-entered the game in the 87th minute and scored just over one minute later lifting Seattle Pacific to its win at Interbay Stadium.

Masson gathered a rebound in the goalmouth after a shot by senior teammate Janae Godoy had caromed off the crossbar then quickly pushed a five-yard shot into the net at 87:32 for her first collegiate goal.

Goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson stopped three shots en route to her 11th career shutout. SPU, which is unbeaten in its last 19 games (18-0-1), outshot SFSU 22-7 in extending its home field unbeaten streak to 32 (30-0-2).

Western Washington Loses Opener To Chico State

Forward Ali Sward scored a pair of goals and added an assist, leading Chico State to a 3-1 victory over Western Washington in the season-opening women's soccer game for both schools Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom Community College campus.

Western, ranked No.12 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II national preseason poll, suffered just its second loss in its last 17 home games despite having a 12-9 advantage in shots.

Chico State midfielder Lisa Webster opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing from 14 yards after a pass from Sward split the Western defense.

The Vikings equalized eight minutes later, as midfielder Kasey Hostetler scored from 15 yards, striking a cross from defender Keller Haden that took a high bounce near the top of the penalty area.

But Sward gave the Wildcats the lead for good in the 29th minute, collecting a loose ball just outside the penalty area and slotting the ball low into the left corner.  It gave Chico State a 2-1 halftime lead despite the Wildcats attempting just two shots in the opening half.

Sward added an insurance goal with just under 15 minutes left.  Webster played Melissa Pease down the right side, and Pease hit a low cross for Sward, who scored from six yards out.

It was the first season-opening loss for Western since 2005, and the first loss in a home opener for the Vikings since 2003.

Meanwhile at Arcata, Humboldt State scored three goals in the final 24 minutes to defeat Western Oregon 3-1.

WOU took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute on a goal by Jordann Gilmer, but the Lumberjacks pulled even on a goal by Arielle Kern at 66:14, then scored twice in a 33 second span (at 83:27 and 84:00) to earn the win.

Seattle Pacific Wins Opener 1-0 Against Cal State Monterey Bay

Jocelyn Charette scored the game's only goal in the 65th minute to lead defending national champion Seattle Pacific to a 1-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday as the 2009 GNAC women's soccer campaign got underway at four venues.

Elsewhere in the GNAC, Saint Martin's lost at home to San Francisco State 3-2 and Northwest Nazarene and Corban battled to a 1-1 draw in Nampa. Central Washington was shutout 4-0 at Cal State L.A.

Charette got the game-winner after a scramble in front of the goalmouth as SPU extended its two-season win streak to 12 games and its unbeaten streak to 18. Karen Hosler was credited with an assist.

SPU outshot the Otters 25-3 as goalkeeper Jessie Rahm Kellerman wasn't called upon to make a save.

Katie Voss scored two second-half goals as San Francisco State broke away from a 1-1 deadlock to win at Lacey. Voss stole the ball and then converted from the top of the box to make it 2-1 in the 47th minute, then added an insurance goal at 79:20.

Jill Webb had both of Saint Martin's goals, one on a free kick in the 30th minute and another on a penalty kick in the final seconds of the contest. The Saints were outshot 26-10, but Ashley Engel kept it close making 14 saves.

Northwest Nazarene scored the opening goal of its season in the 39th minute when Stacey Beckman finished a McKenzie Bailey assist from 18 yards out, beating Corban goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett inside the far post.

Corban evened the match in the 64th minute as Amanda Mendenhall was able to steal the ball from the Crusader defenders just outside the box and then beat NNU keeper Tanya Zickefoose for the game-tying tally.

Both teams produced dangerous opportunities in the pair of 10-minute overtime sessions, but none were rewarded.

NNU offered perhaps the best chance in the 109th minute as a Crusader corner kick crossed in front of the Warrior defense but could not find a solid foot.

Corban led the shot totals with a 19-9 margin, while the Crusaders held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks. NNU's Zickefoose finished with nine saves, while Corban's Bassett grabbed four.
