Women's 2009-10 Basketball Players-of-the-Week

Week of Nov. 16-22: Callie Kautzmann, Montana State Billings (5-10, So., Nampa, ID) scored 63 points and also had 21 rebounds, five assists and seven steals as the Yellowjackets won a trio of contests, all by double-digit margins. Kautzmann shot 56.1 percent from the floor (23-41), 43.8 percent from the three-point line (7 of 16) and 90.9 percent from the free throw line (10-11) in wins over UC-Colorado Springs, Mary and Chadron State. All three contests are region counters for the Yellowjackets.

Week of Nov. 23-29 and Feb. 8-14: In November, Nicci Miller, Alaska Anchorage (F, 5-10, Sr., Denver, CO – Hinkley) led the Seawolves to their fourth straight Great Alaska Shootout title, scoring 39 points and pulling in 15 rebounds in wins over Coastal Carolina and Cincinnati. Miller, who made 15 of 27 shots (55.6 percent) and five of 11 three-pointers was selected the tournament's MVP. It was also the fourth consecutive season that a UAA player had been selected the MVP. The Seawolves also extended their home win streak to 25 with the two victories, including 21 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex and four at the Sullivan Arena. . .In the Week of Feb. 8-14, she scored 32 points, including 21 in a 71-69 victory against Western Washington, snapping the Vikings' win streak at 10 games. Miller's 21, which included the game-winning basket with 3.3 seconds left, was a GNAC career-high for her. She played just 23 minutes against Central Washington, but still had 11 points and eight rebounds. Miller made nine of 18 field goal attempts and all 13 of her free throw attempts in the two contests.

Week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6 and Dec. 7-13: Kristin Hein, Northwest Nazarene (F, 5-11, Sr., Tualatin, OR) earned Most Valuable Player honors in leading the Crusaders to 2-0 records in the GNAC/PacWest Classic at Nampa (Dec. 5-6) and in the Humboldt State Classic (Dec. 12-13). Hein, who also won MVP honors in the NNU Thanksgiving Classic, led the Crusaders in five different categories in the Nampa tournament including points (30), rebounds (14), assists (6), blocks (4) and steals (9), as NNU recorded wins over Dixie State and Grand Canyon. She shot 50 percent (13-26 FGs, 2-4 three-pointers) in the two wins. At Arcata, she scored 34 points and hauled in 27 rebounds in wins over Cal State Stanislaus and Humboldt State. Hein, who made 13 of 26 shots, set a GNAC single-game rebound record with 23 in the win over Humboldt State, which was picked to finish third in the CCAA's pre-season coaches poll.

Week of Dec. 14-21: Jessica Summers, Western Washington (F, 6-1, Sr., Blaine, WA – U. Idaho) scored 99 points and grabbed 43 rebounds in leading the Vikings to three wins and an overtime loss to unbeaten Washburn in tournaments at Las Vegas and Bellingham. Summers, who earned MVP honors in both events, scored 65 points and had 26 rebounds in the Great Western Shootout Wednesday and Thursday at Las Vegas. She then netted 34 points and had 17 rebounds in wins over Chico State and Sonoma State in the GNAC/CCAA Crossover Classic Sunday and Monday at Sam Carver Gymnasium. Summers, who now leads the GNAC in scoring averaging 18.9 points per game, had a GNAC season-high 37 points in Wednesday's 72-70 loss to Washburn and then pulled down 17 rebounds, the second most this season in the conference, in Thursday's 89-70 win over Colorado State – Pueblo. In the four games, she made 39 of 77 shots and 21 of 27 free throws and also had seven assists, four blocks and four steals. Her 37 points against Washburn equaled the second-highest single game total in Viking school history and matched the sixth-best total in GNAC history.

Week of Dec. 28-Jan. 3: Kayla Ryan, Montana State Billings (F, 6-1, Jr., Big Timber, MT) scored 36 points and also had 18 rebounds as the Yellowjackets posted a pair of double-digit victories over Rocky Mountain and Chadron State. Ryan shot 72.2 percent from the floor, making 13 of 18, and also made nine of 10 foul shots in the two victories. She had 22 points and 10 rebounds against Chadron State recording her league-best seventh double-double of the season.

Week of Jan. 4-10: Willow Cabe, Western Washington (F, 6-1, Sr., McCleary, WA - Elma) scored 41 points and also had 16 rebounds leading the Vikings to a pair of wins, including a 20-point victory over two-time defending West Region champion Alaska Anchorage. Cabe had impressive shooting percentages, converting on 16 of 25 field goal attempts (64.0), five of eight three-pointers (62.5) and four of five free throws (80.0). She also had six assists, two steals and a block as WWU grabbed the early lead in the GNAC pennant race.

Week of Jan. 11-17: Amanda Dunbar, Western Washington (G, 5-9, Jr., Maryville, WA – Pilchuck) scored 52 points in double-digit road wins at Western Oregon and Saint Martin's, connecting on 19 of 28 shots, including nine of 15 three-pointers. Dunbar, who is shooting 50 percent (46-92) on the season from the three-point line, had 32 points, including 24 in the first half, in a 79-53 win at Western Oregon and 20 in a 67-50 victory at Saint Martin's. Her 32 point total is the second-highest in the conference this winter, trailing only a 37-point effort by teammate Jessica Summers in a game last month at Las Vegas against Washburn. It was also Dunbar's second career 30-point game. She had a career-high 37 in a game last January against Northwest Nazarene.

Week of Jan. 18-24: Megan Pinske, Western Washington (G, 5-9, Jr., Coquitlam, BC – Port Moody) scored 23 points and also had 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals in double-digit wins over Central Washington and Seattle Pacific as the Vikings opened up a 1 ½ game lead in the conference race. In Thursday's 80-46 victory at Ellensburg, Pinske led the Vikings with five assists and three steals and ranked second on the team with eight rebounds while also producing eight points, all without producing a turnover. She then led WWU with 16 points on six of nine shooting in a 54-40 home win over Seattle Pacific, including a key three-pointer in a 12-2 early second-half run. For the week, Pinske made nine of 16 shots, including three of five treys.

Benson Bergner

Week of Jan. 25-31: Sydney Benson, Seattle Pacific (F, 6-2, Sr. Snohomish, WA) and Sara Bergner, Central Washington (G, 5-10, Sr., Bellingham, WA – Whatcom CC). . .Benson, a transfer from Eastern Washington, scored 35 points, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor (15-24) and 75.0 percent from the three-point line (3-4), as the Falcons earned home wins over Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks. Benson came off the bench to lead SPU in scoring in both games, netting 13 against UAA and 22 against the Nanooks. She made 10 of 11 shots in the latter game. She also had eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. . .Bergner led the Wildcats with 29 points and also had 13 rebounds and seven assists, ranking second on the team in both categories, as CWU earned two road wins, posting its first-ever road victory in seven tries in Billings. Bergner made 10 of 18 shots, three of four from the three-point line and also was perfect from the foul line making six of six.

Week of Feb. 1-7: Megan Hoisington, Seattle Pacific (F, 5-11, Sr., Bremerton, WA – Central Kitsap) had team highs for points (30), rebounds (22) and blocked shots (7) in leading the Falcons to wins over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene. In their one-point win over the Crusaders, Hoisington scored a career-high 17 points, fell one short of her career high with 15 rebounds and had a GNAC season-best six blocks helping SPU rally from an early 11-0 deficit.

Week of Feb. 15-21: Janee Olds, Northwest Nazarene (G, 5-8, Sr., Coos Bay, OR – North Bend) led a balanced attack with 27 points as the Crusaders solidified their playoff chances with 21 and 38-point road wins at Ellensburg and Billings. Olds, who became the 41 st member of the GNAC 1000-Point Club in the process increasing her career total to 1,010, made nine of 15 shots, including five of 10 three-pointers. She also had 11 rebounds and four steals. Both numbers ranked second on the club in NNU's sweep of Central Washington (79-58) and MSU Billings (85-47). Her five three-pointers and her four steals moved her into 14 th place in both categories on the GNAC All-Time career chart with 148 and 179, respectively.

Week of Feb. 22-28: Daesha Henderson, Seattle Pacific (G, 5-8, Sr., Snohomish, WA) scored 44 points in leading the Falcons to their eighth and ninth consecutive victories. She netted 30 points in a 74-48 win over the Wildcats and became the first Falcon to record a 30-point game since Michelle Beaumont tallied 35 against Cal State L.A. on Dec. 28, 2002. She made eight of 13 three-point shots, including six of nine against CWU in bettering her previous career high of 26 which also came against Central in 2009. Overall, she shot 60 percent from the floor (15 of 25) in the two contests and also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Jamey Gelhar

Week of Mar. 1-7: Daesha Henderson, Seattle Pacific (G, 5-8, Sr., Snohomish, WA) and Jamey Gelhar, Saint Martin's (G, 5-6, Sr., Brush Prairie, WA). . . Henderson scored 33 points, including 21 in Saturday's 67-60 win at Anchorage as the Falcons wrapped up their fourth consecutive GNAC women's basketball title and their sixth overall in the nine-year history of the conference with a pair of wins in Alaska. Henderson's three-pointer from deep in the left corner with 3:06 to play put SPU ahead for good in Saturday's victory. She made five of 13 three-point shots and 10 of 12 free throws in her team's two victories. She also had 11 rebounds and five assists. . .Gelhar scored 43 points and also had six rebounds, six assists and four steals as the Saints closed out their season with two wins. She made 10 of 17 shots, including six of seven three-pointers. Gelhar was also 17 of 22 from the foul line. Though she didn't match last year's NCAA record free throw performance when she shot 96.9 percent, Gelhar still finished her career as the No. 2 career free throw shooter in NCAA Division II history making 89.2 percent (355-398). She ended the 2009-10 season with a 78.5 percentage converting on 73 of 93.
