Women's 2010-11 Basketball Players-of-the-Week

Week of Nov. 7-13: Haley Holmstead, Alaska Anchorage (G, 5-8, Jr., American Fork, UT – Salt Lake CC) scored 41 points and also had eight assists as the Seawolves opened their season with 24- and 37-point wins over Minot State and 2011 regional qualifier Dixie State. Holmstead converted on 19 of 29 shots in the two contests as UAA shot at a 51.5 percent clip (68-132). Holmstead had 20 points and four assists in a 87-63 win over Minot State and 21 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 95-58 whipping of Dixie State.

Murray King

Week of Nov. 14-20: Rachael Murray, Seattle Pacific (G, 5-9, Jr., Eglington, New South Wales, Australia) and Briaunna King, Northwest Nazarene (P, 6-0, Sr., Redmond, OR). . .Murray was selected the MVP in the SPU Sodexo Classic as she scored 27 points and also had nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Falcons to wins over Cal State East Bay and Harding. Murray made 10 of 15 field goal attempts and all five of her foul shots in the 11 and 23-point victories. . .King scored 68 points and also had 39 rebounds as the Crusaders won two of three games, losing only to defending regional champion Cal Poly Pomona by seven points. King connected on 24 of 51 shots (47.1 percent) and 18 of 22 free throws.

Week of Nov. 21-27: Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, Simon Fraser (F, 6-2, Jr., Vernon, BC – Kalamalka) led the Clan to a 1-1 record in the Cal State Monterey Bay Classic, scoring 31 points and grabbing 34 rebounds, including 22 in a five-point loss to Colorado State – Pueblo. Her 22 rebounds against Pueblo was just one shy of the GNAC single-game record. Raincock-Ekunwe also had four blocks and three steals. SFU lost by five points to Pueblo which posted a 16-11 record last season, then beat Monterey Bay which advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional semifinals last March before losing.

Haas

Week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4: Jade Haas, Western Oregon (G, 5-10, Sr., Elma, WA – Lower Columbia) scored 40 points and had 11 rebounds leading the Wolves to 16- and 11-point wins over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, snapping a seven-game losing streak dating back to the end of the 2010-11 season. Haas made 18 of 30 shots in the two contests as she combined with teammate Rylee Peterson for 83 points. "Everyone expects Rylee to do it but where Jade has come from last season is amazing," said WOU head coach Greg Bruce. "She is a difference maker because I don't feel anyone can keep up with her. If we can get her the ball in the open floor I feel pretty good about that."

Week of Dec. 5-11: Haley Holmstead, Alaska Anchorage (G, 5-8, Jr., American Fork, UT – Salt Lake CC) scored 45 points, shooting at a 64.5 percent clip (20 of 31), in earning Most Valuable Player honors in the AT&T Hoops Classic at Anchorage. Holmstead also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals as the Seawolves posted a pair of lopsided NCAA Division II West Region victories to remain unbeaten in seven Division II contests.

Schramm

Week of Dec. 12-18: Kristin Schramm, Western Washington (F, 5-9, Sr., Chelan, WA) was named the Most Valuable Player in the Great Western Shootout after leading her team to impressive double-digit wins over Central Oklahoma and Drury. In the two contests, Schramm scored 34 points, connecting on 12 of 24 shots (6 of 12 from the arc). She also had eight rebounds and three assists. Schramm is averaging 12.2 points per game this season and currently ranks fourth in the conference in three-pointers made averaging 1.8 per contest.

Johansson

Week of Dec. 26-Jan. 1: Hanna Johansson, Alaska Anchorage (F, 6-2, Sr., Gothenburg, Sweden) had two dominating performances in road wins at Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene. Johansson made 17 of 21 field goal attempts (81.0 percent) and 10 of 12 free throws (83.3 percent). She also finished with team highs for points (44), rebounds (22), assists (10), blocks (4) and steals (7). Johansson was a perfect eight of eight from the floor against NNU equaling the third most field goals made in a game without a miss in GNAC history. Only Kelley Berglund of Seattle Pacific who made 14 against UAA on Jan. 10, 2002 and Beth Johnson of Northwest Nazarene who made nine against Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 28, 2010 have made more than eight without a miss.

Horn

Week of Jan. 2-8: Alysa Horn, Alaska Anchorage (F, 6-0, Jr., Kodiak, AK) led the Seawolves with 34 points, converting on 13 of 26 shots and all six of her free throws. Horn, who also had eight rebounds, scored 13 of her 15 points in Saturday's 23-point win over Seattle Pacific in the first half including a three-pointer to snap a 21-21 tie putting UAA ahead for good. She had 19 points in Thursday's 59-50 victory against Montana State Billings, scoring six straight to key a 12-2 run early in the second half as the Seawolves pulled away from a 26-26 halftime tie. Her average (17.0) and shooting percentage (50.0) in the two contests were a considerable improvement on her season averages of 10.3 points per game and 44.1 percentage.

Collins

Week of Jan. 9-15: Kristina Collins, Simon Fraser (G, 5-10, Jr., Port Coquitlam, BC – Riverside) was deadly from the arc as she made 10 of 15 to lead the Clan to wins over Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks and remain the only team in the GNAC – female or male – to remain unbeaten at home. Collins made five of seven treys and scored 18 points against the Seawolves handing them their first Division II loss of the season. She then had 15 points and a game-high six assists, making five of eight three-pointers in a 25-point win over Alaska Fairbanks. In addition to her point total, Collins had 11 assists, two blocks and three steals in the two victories as SFU improved to 5-0 at home.

Hartzog Dzhidzhiyeshvili

Week of Jan. 16-22: Nicole Hartzog, Alaska Fairbanks (G, 5-6, Fr., Beaverton, OR) and Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvili, Northwest Nazarene (G, 5-6, Sr., Ontario, OR – Treasure Valley) each led their respective teams to a pair of home victories. . .Hartzog was a standout both offensively and defensively as UAF posted back-to-back conference wins for the first time since 2008, ending a 21-game conference game-losing streak. Hartzog, who was perfect at the foul line making nine of nine, scored 29 points and also had 10 rebounds, nine steals and four assists in victories over Saint Martin's and Western Oregon. “ Nicole plays excellent defense, has a great read on the ball and has quick hands,” UAF coach Cody Burgess said. “Not only does she get the steal, but she usually converts on the layup (at the other end). She definitely has an edge defensively and transfers it over to the offensive end." . . Dzhidzhiyeshvili, who came into Saturday's game, ranked 12th nationally in steals averaging 3.3, had six steals and also scored 20 points as the Crusaders beat Western Washington 75-62. In two wins over teams who started the week with a combined four conference losses, she had 40 points, 11 steals, seven rebounds and five assists as NNU pulled to within a game of second place in the GNAC race.

Tolman Johansson

Week of Jan. 23-29: Hanna Johansson, Alaska Anchorage (F, 6-2, Sr., Gothenburg, Sweden) and Brooke Tolman, Montana State Billings (G, 5-7, Jr., Honeyville, UT – Central Wyoming). . .Johansson scored 40 points and also had 27 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks as the Seawolves, the nation's No. 1 ranked team in scoring differential. outscored Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington by a combined margin of 72 points. Johansson, who made 17 of 26 shots, moved from 24 th place to 18 th in career scoring (1,215) and from 17 th to 16 th in career rebounding (710). She also climbed three spots from 20 th to 17 th in career steals (177) and is now one of three players who currently rank on the GNAC Top 20 Career chart in all three categories. The other two are Rose Shaw of Central Washington (1998-99 to 2001-02) and Alysson Kollman of Northwest Nazarene (1998-00 to 2002-03) making Johansson the only one of the three to play her entire career in the GNAC era. . .Tolman came off the bench to lead the Yellowjackets to road wins at Lacey and Monmouth scoring a team-high 30 points. Tolman, who made seven of 12 treys, scored a season-high 19 points in Thursday's 57-41 win at Western Oregon converting on four of six three-pointers. She followed that performance up with 11 points Saturday afternoon in a six-point win at Saint Martin's as MSUB ran its road win streak to four. Overall MSUB has won eight of its last 10 games.
