ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage’s Jenna Buchanan was named Thursday to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Women’s Basketball Team, recognizing  the senior as one of the top five student-athletes among the 38 schools of the NCAA Division II West Region.

The 5-8 guard from Galena, Alaska, was honored for her 3.64 overall grade-point average as an early childhood education major, plus her outstanding play on the court for the nationally top-ranked Seawolves (27-1, 13-1 GNAC).

Buchanan is UAA’s second-leading scorer and ranks seventh in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 13.4 points per game. She ranks ninth nationally in three-point percentage (.472) and 12th in three-pointers per game (3.2), and she has already claimed UAA’s program records for career threes made (216), season threes made (85), and consecutive games with at least one three-pointer (31). Buchanan is also second among all active NCAA Div. II players and fourth in GNAC history with her career .424 three-point percentage, and she stands No. 10 on UAA’s career scoring list with 1,152 points.

Sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the academic all-district teams are voted on by SIDs throughout the NCAA’s eight geographical districts, with the Div. II West Region comprised of three leagues – the GNAC, the Pacific West Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Buchanan and the other academic all-district honorees now advance to the Academic All-America Team ballot, from which the first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
