FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska women's basketball has kept busy on the court, in the classroom as well as in the community. Over the last few weeks, the Nanooks have participated in a pair of community service events at a local middle school as well as on campus with the girl scouts.

Back on Nov. 20, five players and the coaching staff went to Tanana Middle School for a pep rally. Alaska surprised the eighth grade girls' basketball team by scrimmaging against them in front of about 400 students. Normally, the team would play staff from TMS but school officials invited the Nanooks to come in and surprise them.

Last Saturday, Dec. 9, the 'Nooks hosted a local Fairbanks girl scout group at the Patty Center for games and fun. The group, made up of six to 10 year olds, played games such as dribble tag and were taught drills by a number of players and assistant coach Amy Senefelder.

Following that, the girl scouts taught the women's basketball players some songs and values and they asked the team questions about basketball. The Nanooks handed out schedule magnets and the girl scouts said they plan on attending future games with their parents.

Despite the busy schedule of being a student and an athlete, the women's basketball program has participated in four separate community service activities this semester as well as its visit to Fort Wainwright for the Military Appreciation initiative back in mid-November.
