NAMPA, Idaho - Katy Gross of Seattle Pacific won her third straight title Friday in the pentathlon at the 10th annual GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at Jacksons Track.

Gross broke her own meet record in the event scoring 3,505 points.  She also tied the meet record for the best high jump mark in a pentathlon with a leap of 5-4 1/2.  Hannah Borden of Northwest Nazarene set the pentathlon meet record in the 800 with a time of 2:23.83.

Gross is the ninth female athlete in meet history to win the same event three times.

Two other GNAC women estabished meet records Friday.

Becki Duhamel of Central Washington set a meet record with a winning throw of 54-2  in the weight throw, while Emily Warman of Western Washington tied the meet record of 18-9 3/4 in winning the long jump.  It was Warman's second career win in the long jump.  She also won the event in 2010.

Duhamel and Warman's records broke and tied two of the three oldest remaining women's meet marks.  Duhamel eclipsed the record of 53-9 1/4 set by Kristin Hepler of Western Oregon in 2004, while Warman tied SPU's Danielle Ayers-Stamper's 2005 record.

Two meet records also fell in Day 1 of the heptathlon as Cody Thomas of Alaska Anchorage set a new standard in the 60 meters (7.13) and Ethan Meikle of Central Washington set a multi-event record in the high jump (6-4 1/4).  Thomas is the Day 1 heptathlon leader with 2,775 points.

Western Washington took the first-day team lead in both divisions.

The Viking women, who got wins from Warman and Karis Anderson in the pole vault (12-4), lead Alaska Anchorage by 15 1/2 points.  Northwest Nazarene is third with 33 points and nine-time defending champion Seattle Pacific is fourth with 31.

Western Washington leads five-time champion Western Oregon 46-39 in the men's division.  Alaska Anchorage is just 10 points back in third place with 36 points.

The Seawolves, competing in their first GNAC indoor championship meet, won three events Friday.  Susan Tanui and Micah Chelimo swept the 3,000 meter races in times of 9:54.95 and 8:29.35.  Both events were being contested for the first time.  UAA also won the men's distance medley relay in a time of 10:06.58.  That was just two seconds off the meet record.

Other winners Friday included Logan Myers of Western Washington in the men's high jump (6-7), WWU's Kevin Yates in the long jump (23-4), Tanner Rottrup of MSU Billings in the shot put (52-8 3/4) and Simon Fraser in the women's distance medley relay (11:47.86).  Rottrup won the shot for the second year in a row.
