SEATTLE  -  Micah Chelimo of Alaska Anchorage set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor record in the 3,000 meters Saturday in the University of Washington Indoor Invitational at the Dempsey Arena.

Chelimo, who won the NCAA Division II outdoor 5,000 meter title last spring and the NCAA Division II national cross country title this past fall,  finished 13th overall in the meet in a time of 8:14.15, bettering the previous GNAC record of 8:16.85 by Anthony Tomsich of Western Washington in 2010.

All 12 athletes ahead of Chelimo were either from NCAA Division I schools are from club teams.

Chelimo’s time was one of 10 provisional national qualify marks estabished by the Seawolves in their inaugural indoor meet since adding the sport this past fall.

Also posting PNQs for UAA were Ethan Hewitt in the 400 meters, Joe Day in the 800 meters, Alfred Kangogo in the mile, Dylan Anthony in the 5000, Cody Thomas in the heptathlon, Susan Tanui in the women’s 3,000 and Ruth Keino in the 5,000.

UAA also met the NCAA standard in both the men’s and women’s distance medley relay.  Its men’s time of 9:55.87 was the third quickest in GNAC indoor history.

Three other performances at UW also ranked among the Top 3 in GNAC history.   Western Washington ran the second fastest men’s 4x400 relay time  (3:17.01). 

Tanui’s time of 9:38.71 in the 3K ranks second on the all-time GNAC Top 10 list and Simon Fraser’s time of 11:41.78 in the women’s distance medley ranks third.

In addition to the 10 Anchorage qualifying marks, GNAC athletes established 12 other national qualifying marks at UW.

Simon Fraser athletes posted seven qualifying marks including five in the women’s 800 led by Helen Crofts who posted an automatic time of 2:08.52.  Micahela Kane, Lindsay Butterworth, Sarah Sawatzky and Kansas Mackenzie also had PNQs with season-best times,

Also earning PNQs for the Clan were Chantel Desch in the 400 meters and the foursome of Crofts, Desch, Kane and Butterworth in the distance medley relay. 

Western Washington got PNQ performances from Alex Donigian in the men’s 200 and from Emily Warman in the women’s long jump.  WWU’s time in the men’s 4x400 relay also met the standard.

Western Oregon’s Chris Olsen in the men’s 800 meters and Seattle Pacific’s McKayla Fricker in the women’s 800 meters also posted PNQs.

At Nampa, Andrew Curtis of Northwest Nazarene posted a PNQ in the men's 200 in a time of 22.16.   Curtis' time ranks seventh in GNAC history just back of Donigian.  NNU also got a Top 10 time at Nampa from Marie Smith who ran the 60 hurdles in a time of 8.99, bettering her own previous fifth-place ranking by .01 seconds.

Meanwhile at Bozeman, Montana State Billings' Drew Galahan won the men's 800 meter and the Yellowjackets set two school records in the Montana State Open.

Galahan posted a time of 1:58.25 in the 800.  Setting school records were Tyson Vanderby in the mile (4:21.73 converted to 4:16.08) and Shelby Martinell in the 55 meter hurdles (8.83).
