GNAC Record for Alaska Anchorage's Hewitt in 400 at Las Vegas

Alaska Anchorage freshman Ethan Hewitt set a GNAC record in winning the men's 400 meters in a time of 47.97 Saturday in the UNLV Track and Field Classic in Las Vegas.

Hewitt broke the old GNAC record of 48.11 set by Western Oregon's Ashtin Mott two years.

He was one of six UAA athletes to establish provisional national qualifying marks as the 2010 outdoor season got underway.

Alfred Kangogo established two PNQs, winning the 1500 in a time of 3:51.04 and finishing second in the 800 with a clocking of 1:52.50. His latter time ranks 10th in GNAC history.

Kangogo led a 1-2-3 Seawolf finish in the 1500, including a second-place finish by Marko Cheseto. Cheseto's time of 3:52.04 was also a PNQ.

Also earning a PNQ and a victory was Micah Chelimo in the steeplechase. His winning time of 9:13.31 ranks ninth in conference history.

On the women's side, UAA's Miriam Kipng'eno and Hallidie Wilt also had PNQs. Kipng'eno finished third in the 1500 in a time of 4:37.22. Wilt placed second in a time of 11:10.43, 10 seconds under the provisional mark and the sixth best mark in conference history.

Nick Wilson had Montana State Billings' best finish in the meet, placing second in the men's javelin with a throw of 196-10. That mark ranks 10th on the GNAC all-time javelin list and is a provisional national qualifying mark.

Siler, Tilley Lead Vikings to Victories

Ellie Siler and Alex Tilley both won two individual titles to lead Western Washington to the team titles at in a four-way meet hosted by the University of Puget Sound Saturday.

Siler set two meet records winning the 200 in 25.25 and the 400 in 56.46. Her 200 time ranks sixth in GNAC history and her 400 time is provisional national qualifying mark, bettering the standard by .34 seconds.

On the men's side, Tilley was involved in three meet records. He won the 100 (11.08) and 200 (22.38) in meet-record times and also anchored both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay to victories. WWU's time of 42.0 in the 4x100 was also a meet record.

The Vikings also got meet records from Keefe Brockman in the men's triple jump (44-1 1/4) and from Joana Houplin in the women's 100 meters (12.85).

In all the Viking women won a total of 11 events in outpointing Seattle Pacific 237-213 for the team title though neither team was at full strength as most of the 14 athletes (eight from WWU and six from SPU) who will compete in next weekend's indoor national meet skipped the outdoor opener.

SPU had five winners, including triple jumper Amanda Alvarez who had a national provisional mark of 39-0 ¼, and both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Alvarez's triple jump mark ranks second in GNAC history trailing only Alaska Anchorage's Kim Brady who went 39-3 3/4 in 2008.

On the men's side, the Vikings outscored host Puget Sound 279-153 for the title, getting a total of 10 victories. Seattle Pacific won four events.

Powers Hits PNQ In Javelin at Willamette Meet

Western Oregon's Carolanne Powers finished second in the javelin with a provisional national qualifying mark of 133-1 at the Willamette Opener in Salem Saturday.

WOU established a total of 33 GNAC provisional marks in the meet including 17 by the women and 16 by the men. The Wolves also won a total of 12 events.

Two-event winners include Erika Snawder in the women's 800 and 1500 and Andy Loscutoff in the men's 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles.
