Falcons Earn Tie With Seattle University (11/3/07)

Despite playing for 50 minutes with only 10 players, Seattle Pacific earned a 1-1 draw versus cross-town rival and nationally ranked No. 5 Seattle University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday night at Interbay Stadium.

Corey Sinser was given a red card in the 60th minute forcing the Falcons to play a man down.

The Redhawks were able to capitalize on the man advantage just two minutes later and break the scoreless deadlock as Jason Cascio turned a SPU defender and fired a shot past keeper Kellen Rosten.

The resilient Falcons, who were emotionally charged up due to senior night, refused to go away.

Jeff Hallenbeck's corner kick knocked around a scrum of players before James Coggan poked it over the goal line in the 85th minute.

Just two minutes later the Redhawks seemed destined for a victory when Cascio was taken down inside the SPU box resulting in a penalty kick. But Rosten was able to save the day, diving to his left to swat away Cascio's shot.

Both teams had chances to seal a victory in the two overtimes.   In the 104th minute Rosten made a point blank reflex save to thwart Cascio again.  SU goalie Emerson DeOliveira stopped Coggan on a breakaway with just over 4 minutes remaining.

Both goalies were busy as the Redhawks, who had their 10-game win streak snapped, fired 22 shots on goal to the Falcons 12.  Rosten totaled 11 saves in his final game as a Falcon. DeOliveira had three.

Western Washington Outscores Saint Martin's 5-1 (10/27/07)

Forward Gibson Bardsley added to his team-leading totals with two goals and an assist as Western Washington defeated Saint Martin's 5-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

In non-conference games, Montana State Billings closed out its regular-season with a 5-0 shutout of Great Falls and Seattle Pacific lost at home to Incarnate Word 1-0.

Western Washington (12-6-1, 3-3-1) snapped a three-match winless streak (two losses, 1 tie) which had followed an eight-game winning streak with its victory. The Saints (3-16-0, 0-8-0) remained winless in the GNAC.

Keeper Kellen Rosten kept the Falcons in the game, stopping Thomas Mosely twice in one on one situations.

Lemley put Incarnate Word in front just after half time taking a thru ball from Jon Edwards and calmly waited for Rosten to commit before dribbling around him and firing the ball into a wide open net.

Matt Kemper came within a foot of leveling the game in the 75th minute. James Coggan whipped in a cross from the right wing and Kemper's snap header flew just inches over the crossbar.

Incarnate Word outshot SPU 15-10 overall, 6-1 in the first half. Rosten and Cardinal goalie Gil Ben Nachum both tallied four saves.

Jurell Linford had a goal and two assists as Montana State Billings finished its regular-season with a 13-4-1 record.

“Our goalkeeper (Lockwood) gave up two goals, but he played phenomenal,” WWU coach Travis Connell said. “One was a penalty kick and the other was a volley that he had no chance of saving. He stopped them point-blank three times.”

It was just the third time that Western had been shut out this season, two of them in the last three games.

Saint Martin's Snaps 12-Game Losing Streak (10/23/07)

The Yellowjackets, who finish their regular-season Saturday with a non-conference game at Great Falls, completed their conference season with a 5-2-1 record and at least temporarily moved back into first-place, a place they fell out of on Sunday when Seattle University beat Saint Martin's.

MSUB (12-4-1 overall) is a point ahead of the Redhawks (5-1-0) in the conference standings which are based on three points for a win and one for a draw.

Seattle, however, needs just one win or two ties in its final two conference games to win the GNAC title outright. The Redhawks, who have won or shared five of the previous six conference titles, host Western Washington Thursday before concluding their campaign Nov. 3 at Seattle Pacific.

MSUB clinched no worse than a tie for second-place with its victory as it overcame extremely windy conditions in Billings scoring twice in the second half.

The 'Jackets broke up a scoreless deadlock in the 60th minute as Charles, who leads the GNAC in scoring with 41 points (19 goals, 3 assists) was fouled in the SPU box and converted his sixth penalty kick of the season in six attempts.

MSUB added an insurance goal seven minutes later as Charles and Scott Dixon raced up the left side passing the ball back and forth. Charles' shot was saved by SPU goalie Kellen Rosten, but a streaking Chris Cornish followed through on the rebound pushing the ball into the net just out of Rosten's reach.

MSUB finished the contest with a 13-8 shot advantage. Rosten had six saves, while 'Jacket goalie Sander Tollefson stopped three shots in recording the shutout. The loss dropped Seattle Pacific to 7-4-6 on the season, including 2-2-2 in the GNAC.

Following Saturday's season finale, the Yellowjackets will take the final week of the regular-season off before learning if they will be awarded one of the four NCAA Far West Regional playoff berths.

Falcons, Vikings Battle to 1-1 Draw (10/19/07)

Western Washington and Seattle Pacific battled to a 1-1 draw in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Friday night at Interbay Stadium. The tie was the sixth for the Falcons (7-3-6, 2-1-2) this season, including five by scores of 1-1.

Following a scoreless first half, Western Washington (11-5-1, 2-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute as Samir Vejo put a free kick into the upper left corner from 22 yards. Vejo was awarded the free kick after Gibson Bardsley was fouled.

Seattle Pacific tied it at 1-1 in the 70th minute on a corner kick by Jeff Hallenback that was passed across the goalmouth by Drew Macha to James Coggan, who knocked it in from eight yards.

The Falcons thought they had won the match with just seconds remaining but Matt Kemper was called offsides as he slotted the ball into the net.

Western Washington, which outshot SPU 19-13, had numerous opportunities in addition to its lone goal. "Gibson (Bardsley) was just unstoppable,” WWU coach Travis Connell said of his standout freshman forward, who has nine goals this season.

“He beat his guy time and time again and either was fouled or he got a good shot on goal. They had no answer for him. He could easily have had four goals himself. He missed wide left by just inches four times in the game.”

Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood made nine saves, and the Falcons' Kellen Rosten had six.

Seattle Pacific Outscores Saint Martin's 4-2 (10/16/07)

Corey Sinser and Brendon Cloyd scored first half goals to lead Seattle Pacific to a 4-2 win over Saint Martin's Tuesday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

Victor Kelmel brought the Saints back to within one in the 31st minute, rocketing a shot past the out-stretched arm of Falcon goalie Kellen Rosten.

The Falcons, however, built up a 4-1 lead in the second half as Alec Nelson corralled a rebound and ripped a shot into the upper left corner and Jeff Hallenbeck converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute for his team leading seventh goal of the year.

The Saints got an own goal in the 78th minute to account for the final margin.

Western Washington Win Streak Ends At Eight (10/15/07)

Tony Judice scored in the 27th minute and the goal held up as Grand Canyon blanked Western Washington 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer contest Monday night at the GCU Sports Complex.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Vikings, their longest since 1990, as they fell to 11-5-0.

Grand Canyon , which won its sixth straight game, improved to 9-4-3. The Antelopes are 7-1-1 at home this season.

Judice's goal, his sixth of the season, came on a cross into the box that he slammed in from five yards. Daniel Sabillon and Andrew Bailey were each credited with assists.

“It was a very passionately contested game as both teams had a lot riding on it,” said Western coach Travis Connell, whose team came into the contest ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II West Region rating.

“There was a lot of transition, end-to-end action, and unfortunately it didn't end up in our favor, but it wasn't because of lack of effort.”

The Grand Canyon goal was just the second allowed by the Vikings in their last six games.

The Antelopes had a slim 12-11 edge in shots and Western had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks with six coming in the second half.

Grand Canyon goalkeeper Vincent Licciardi made three saves in recording his third shutout of the campaign.

Western defeated the Antelopes 2-1 on Sept. 24 at Bellingham on a penalty kick by Matt Pele with less than three minutes to go.

The win was the seventh in a row for the Redhawks (12-2, 4-1-0), who moved to within one point of first-place Montana State Billings (4-2-1) in the conference standings.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute as Allbery sprinted with the ball to the end line on an overlapping run to slip a quick pass into the box.

Cascio was waiting, made a quick turn, and deposited the ball into the back of the net.

SPU (6-3-5, 1-1-1) tied the score with a goal by Colin Cosco in the 54th minute. The goal was chipped into the net after Cosco received a pass from James Coggan.

Allbery and Cascio, however, teamed up again late in the half for the game winner. Allbery carried the ball from his defensive position, split two defenders and dribbled all the way into the box.

The goal was Cascio's seventh of the season and Allbery earned his seventh assist on the play.

Goalkeeper Emerson DeOliveira made five saves in earning the win for the Redhawks, who outshot the Falcons 16-9. One of his saves came in the second half on a header off a corner kick where he snatched the ball out of the upper corner of the goal to preserve a tie at that juncture. Rosten had just one save for Seattle Pacific.

Western Washington Extends Win Streak To Eight (10/12/07)

Western Washington extended its win streak to eight games, its longest  in 17 years, as the Vikings defeated Hawaii Hilo 3-1 in a non-conference men's soccer contest Friday afternoon at Grand Canyon University Field in Phoenix, Ariz.

Viking goal keeper Michael Lockwood extended his scoreless streak to 474 minutes, the third longest in GNAC history, before surrendering a meaningless goal with 12 seconds left in the contest.

In Friday's only other men's game, Sam Charles scored the quickest goal in school history as Montana State Billings edged Mary 2-1 in the opening round of the Maurader Classic at Bismarck, N.D.

With the two wins, the GNAC's top four teams are an impressive 28-6-4 in non-conference games this fall. Including first-year program Saint Martin's, GNAC teams are 30-13-4 against outside competition.

“It was a great win,” said WWU coach Travis Connell said of the Viking victory. “The offense is really clicking right now. Our forwards are very dangerous and they're scoring a lot of goals for us.”

The Vikings broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 35th minute as Cody Hagler found the far post on a volley of a cross by Chris Jepson.

Four minutes later, WWU's Cris Geday served a corner kick to the far post that Brendan Quilici pounded to Matt Fishbaugher, whose header found the net.

UHH, which outshot WWU 11-9 and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks, scored its only goal against Lockwood, who had six saves, with 12 seconds remaining as Nyle Ortiz converted on a cross from Clay Campbell.

It was the Vikings' second straight win in Phoenix as they blanked Hawaii Pacific 2-0 on Thursday. Western had not won in six previous games in the city.

At Bismarck, Charles found the net just 40 seconds into the contest, breaking the old MSUB record for fastest goal of 51 seconds by Dustin Kono in 2005.

The goal was Charles' 18th of the season, extending his own school record. He was assisted by Scott Dixon, who returned to the lineup after missing the last six games to earn his team-leading sixth assist.

“Scott Dixon was outstanding after missing the last six games,” said Yellowjacket head coach Dan McNally.  “It was great to have him back.”

The Jackets' 1-0 lead stood for most of the first half before the Marauders knotted the game just before halftime.  Mary's Casey Harrod beat Jacket keeper Sander Tollefson in the 41st minute to send the game to intermission deadlocked.  Tollefson finished the game with one save.

MSUB got the game-winner from Jeremy DeHerrera at 64:15.  After Greg McKeever sent a free kick into the box, DeHerrera emerged from the scramble for the ball and netted his second goal of the season.

The win gave MSU Billings (10-3-1) its first 10-win season in school history.  Mary fell to 3-9-1 with the loss.

Bardsley Leads Western Washington To Seventh Straight Victory (10/11/07)

Forward Gibson Bardsley became Western Washington's sole season record holder for goals by a freshman scoring the game winner in a 2-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific Thursday at Grand Canyon University field.

It was the seventh straight victory for the Vikings, matching their longest winning streak since 2004. WWU improved to 10-4-0 with its fourth consecutive shutout.

Bardsley scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 35th minute, heading in a crossing free kick by Zach Bauling to break the WWU frosh scoring mark set in 1985 by Jeff Busch.

“Our freshmen have been great and he's (Bardsley) led them,” said Western coach Travis Connell . “A big part of his game is his speed, which makes us dangerous and opens up the game for us. We didn't have that weapon last year and it's been great for us.”

Keith Ferris scored his third goal in the last two games in the 66th minute on a breakaway, getting free on a pass from Matt Pele. It was Pele's fourth assist of the season, tying him for the team lead.

“Ferris played a big role in the victory, not only with his goal, but he had a lot of energy and played really well throughout the match,” Connell said.

Viking goalkeeper Michael Lockwood had three saves in recording his sixth shutout of the season and the team's seventh. The Vikings had an 11-5 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

In the 76th minute, Dustin Allbery sent a cross into the box, where Cameron Mertens was stationed. Mertens converted on the opportunity, picking up his third goal for the weekend and tying Cascio for the team lead with his fifth tally of the season. Oliver Wellman and Keith Ferris each scored two goals in Western Washington's victory at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus. The Vikings (9-4) have won six straight, their longest streak since winning seven consecutive games in 2004.

Ferris then scored his first two goals of the campaign. In the 43rd minute, he took a pass at the top of the box from Brendan Quilici and chipped it over the goalie's head into the net.

Ferris scored again in the 56th minute with Wellman and Samir Vejo getting assists. Wellman is now tied for the team lead with four assists.

Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood did not have to make a save in recording his fifth shutout of the season and the team's sixth.

The Vikings had a huge 19-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks in dropping Mary to 3-8-1 on the season. The North Dakota school was outscored this week 13-1 in losses to Seattle, Seattle Pacific and the Vikings.

Justin Carvery accounted for all the offense in Simon Fraser's victory over Montana State Billings. Carvery scored on a penalty kick at 17:44, then added an insurance goal at 65:51.

Though the Clan outshot MSUB by 10, it was hardly a dominating performance. SFU had only three shots on goal in addition to its penalty kick (Sander Tollefson made two saves) and the Yellowjackets took four of the six corner kicks in the contest.

Seattle University Routs Mary 6-1 As Allbery, Mertens Score Twice (10/5/07)

Dustin Allbery and Cameron Mertens each scored two goals and Seattle University launched a GNAC-record tying 39 shots in a 6-1 win over Mary. N.D. in a non-conference men's soccer game Friday at Championship Field.

Allbery, who set a GNAC record with four assists in a game last season, had a goal in each half and Mertens scored twice after the break as the Redhawks, who have won five straight, improved to 10-2 on the season. Mary dropped to 3-7-1 with the loss.

The game was tied at 1-1 before Allbery converted a rebound off a missed shot by Mertens at 31:47 to put SU up for good. Chris Hodges then scored on a header off a corner by Sean Morris right at the end of the half (44:21) to make it 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, Mertens and Allbery had back-to-back goals at 69:46 and 71:59 and Mertens scored against at 86:40 to complete the scoring. Redhawk goalie Emerson DeOliveira made one save before departing for Max Walker at 73:11.

Seattle's 39 shots equaled the GNAC record set by Northwest Nazarene versus Walla Walla College on Sept. 25, 2002. It is the most ever against a NCAA opponent. The Redhawks also had 14 of the 15 corner kicks.

Charles Records Second Hat Trick (10/4/07)

Montana State Billings sophomore Sam Charles scored three goals, two on penalty kicks, and also assisted on another goal as the Yellowjackets exploded for five second-half goals in a 6-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win at Saint Martin's Thursday.

In non-conference games, Western Washington blanked Colorado - Colorado Springs 2-0 and Seattle Pacific shut out Mary 3-0.

It was the second hat trick and the fifth multi-goal game of the year for Charles, who leads the conference with 36 points and a school-record 17 goals. He surpassed Dave Austin's record of 15 goals scored during the 1998 season.

Charles is just five goals short of the GNAC single season record of 22 set by Bobby McAlister of Seattle University in 2004 when he led the Redhawks to the national title and was the National Player-of-the-Year.

Charles had the only goal of the first half on a penalty kick in the 24th minute. MSUB, however, then scored four times in a space of 14 1/2 minutes to blow it open early in the second half.

Charles set up Jarred Weisen for a goal at 53:23, then converted another penalty kick at 55:07. Weisen made it 4-0 at 60:32, before Charles got his third goal at 67:46 on a header off a corner kick by Chris Cornish.

Jurell Linford, who had an assist on Weisen's second goal, then completed the scoring with a goal at 82:07.

MSUB, which improved to 9-2-1 overall, outshot the Saints (2-11, 0-5) 24-7. Yellowjacket keepers Sander Tollefson (79:15) and Matthew Mitchell (10:45) combined for the shutout, MSUB's seventh of the season. Tollefson had the only save.

MSUB clinched a winning conference season with the victory improving to 4-2-1 (1-2-1 in road games) and increasing its league-leading point total to 13. The Yellowjackets' only remaining conference game is at home against Seattle Pacific.

Freshman midfielder Brendan Quilici scored two minutes into the second half, propelling Western Washington to its victory at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Vikings (8-4), their longest streak since winning seven in a row in 2004. UCCS (2-9) lost for the seventh time in its last eight games.

Quilici scored his fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute, collecting a long ball that was misplayed by the UCCS defense and finding the net from 10 yards.

Forward Gibson Bardsley got an insurance goal for the Vikings in the 77th minute. It was his team-leading seventh goal of the season, tying the school record for goals by a freshman set by Jeff Busch in 1985.

Bardsley took a long pass from Oliver Wellman and fired a rocket from 15 yards into the upper left corner. Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood recorded his fourth shutout of the campaign, making three saves.

Colin Kosco's goal and assist in the first half sparked Seattle Pacific to its victory over Mary at Interbay Stadium.

Jeff Hallenbeck and James Coggan also scored the Falcons (5-2-5), who snapped a six-game winless run. The Marauders (3-6-1) lost for the first time in four games.

Kosco was on the end of a corner-kick sequence in the eighth minute. The play began with Doug Whitney finding Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone for a header back across the crease.

A long throw by Kosco was relayed on to Hallenbeck for a 16-yard strike to the upper right corner, making it 2-0 with 2:48 left in the first half. Coggan scored his fifth goal of the season in the 59th minute, off assists by Hallenbeck and Whitney.

It was the most goals scored by SPU since the opening game of the season. The Falcons had lost two in a row after tying the previous four games all by identical 1-1 scores.

Kellen Rosten made just one save as Seattle Pacific finished with a dominating 24-3 advantage in shots and 10-1 in corners.

Redhawks Edge SMU, Western Washington Wins 1-0 (10/1/07)

Eric Forner earned an assist on Seattle University's first goal, then scored what turned out to be the game-winner as the Redhawks defeated Saint Martin's 3-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Monday at Championship Field.

In a non-conference game, forward Samir Vejo scored the only goal and goalkeeper Michael Lockwood made eight saves as Western Washington hung on to defeat Cal State Stanislaus 1-0 at Warrior Field in Turlock, Calif.

Seattle (9-2, 3-1) led Saint Martin's 1-0 at halftime as Jason Cascio sent a pass to Forner. Forner's thru ball then found a streaking John Fishbaugher, who beat his defender and eluded the goalie for his third goal of the year.

Seattle then made it 2-0 at 67:58 as Dustin Allbery sent a short pass on a free kick to Forner, whose shot from 25 yards sailed pass Saint goalie Zac Lubin into the net.

Saint Martin's (2-10, 0-4) got on the board with a little more than seven minutes left on a goal by Vlad Voin after Craig Franklin carried the ball up the field drawing the attention of SU goalie Jordan Jennings.

Franklin sent a cross into the box where Voin was waiting to tap the ball in an open net.

Ian Walsh, however, scored an insurance goal for Seattle, which outshot the Saints 27-3, at 86:48 after taking a cross from Andrew Kreiter. Lubin kept the match close making nine saves.

Western Washington's victory was its fourth straight, the Vikings' longest streak since winning seven in a row in 2004.

WWU improved to 7-4, while Cal State Stanislaus, which has not won in five games, dropped to 2-8-3. The Warriors have not scored for 401 minutes.

The game's only goal was scored in the 10th minute when forward Gibson Bardsley took a hard ball from the wing and flicked it on stride to Samir, who finished with a one-touch from 16 yards out into the lower right corner.

It was Vejo's team-high third game-winning goal and his sixth overall, tying him for top honors with Bardsley, whose four assists are a team-best.

“We lost to this team last year and to come on the road and get a victory like this is great for our program,” said Western coach Travis Connell .

“Lockwood was phenomenal with eight saves, two from point-blank range right at the end to preserve the win and the shutout. He was fantastic, definitely the player of the match.”

Cal State Stanislaus had a 16-12 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Weisen Earns Three Assists in MSUB Win (9/29/07)

Jarred Weisen was credited with three assists as Montana State Billings snapped a three-game winless streak with a 5-1 home win over Colorado Christian Saturday.

Meanwhile at Lacey, freshman Gibson Bardsley had a goal and an assist to lead Western Washington to a 3-1 conference win over Saint Martin's.

In a night game, Seattle Pacific (4-2-5) lost at Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1, extending its winless streak to six games.

Weisen had assists on goals by Justin Hoskins, Chris Andre and Sam Charles, respectively, as MSUB overcame an early 1-0 deficit to improve to 8-2-1.

Weisen is the seventh player in GNAC history to record three assists in a game. The record is four by Seattle's Dustin Allbery last year against Chaminade.

The Yellowjackets went ahead for good on a penalty kick goal by Sam Charles at 40:24, then got Andre's goal to make to 3-1 right at the end of the half (44:56).

Charles' two goals increased his league-leading total to 14. He had just three shots on Saturday. Weisen had a team-best six shots as MSUB outshot the visitors 23-5.

Three goalies split the duties in the crease for the 'Jackets. Dylan Malloy, the second of the 'keepers, had the only save.

Western Washington, which has won three straight, earned its first road win in improving to 6-4 and leveling its conference record at 2-2. Saint Martin's fell to 2-9 and remained winless in three league games.

Bardsley gave Western a 1-0 lead with just over two minutes left in the first half, finding the left corner with his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a cross from Matt Pele.

The Vikings made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half as Samir Vejo headed in a long, bending cross from Oliver Wellman. It was the fifth goal of the campaign for Vejo.

Saint Martin's cut the deficit to one with a goal by Chase Franklin in the 66th minute. The Vikings, however, responded with an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as Michael Ricci followed up a deflection by Bardsley.

Western had a 17-9 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Michael Lockwood made five saves for the Vikings. Zac Lubin had eight saves for the Saints.

At Carson, Corey Sinser netted his first collegiate goal for Seattle Pacific, but 13th ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-2) got the winning goal a minute later.

SPU began the week ranked sixth, but has lost twice since the rankings were issued. The Toros have won nine of their last 10.

With the Falcons trailing 1-0, Sinser received a lead pass from Alec Nelson and made good on his only shot of the game to level the score in the 67th minute.

But a minute later, Sammy Rivas scored his second goal of the match off assists from Diego Turoldo and Humberto Lopez. Rivas also scored the game's first goal in the 39th minute when he tucked away a deflection off Seattle Pacific keeper Kellen Rosten.

Rosten had a busy night for the Falcons as he made seven saves to keep Seattle Pacific within striking distance. The Toros tallied 22 shots for the match, led by Rivas' six.

Cascio Scores Twice in Seattle University Victory (9/28/07)

Jason Cascio scored in each half to lead Seattle University to a 2-0 win over UC San Diego Friday in a NCAA Far West Regional contest at Championship Field.

The first goal came in the 32nd minute when Cascio received a long ball and left it for Cameron Mertens who then one touched it back to the Redhawk forward.

Cascio, last season's GNAC Player of the Year, then drove a shot in the upper side netting for a spectacular goal.

After returning from halftime Cascio found the net again, this time in the 60th minute.

Freshman Nick James recorded his first assist as a Redhawk when he fought for a loose ball in the box and slipped it through to Cascio who directed the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Seattle dominated play for most of the game recording a 21-7 advantage in shots and earning six corners without allowing one against them.

SU goalkeeper Emerson DeOliveira earned his fourth shutout. He made just one save, but it came at a crucial time in the first half when the game was still scoreless.

The Seattle backline directed play throughout the match. Chris Hodges, David Raney, Dustin Allbery and Eric Forner controlled the ball and found their wings and forwards to facilitate the offense.

Seattle Pacific Loses To UC San Diego 1-0 For First Loss (9/26/07)

Jason Le scored in the first half as UC San Diego dealt nationally sixth-ranked Seattle Pacific its first men's soccer loss of the season 1-0 at Interbay Stadium Wednesday night.

The game was the Tritons' first under interim coach Paul Holohan, who replaced the retired Derek Armstrong Monday. UCSD (2-6-1) had entered the game on a four-game losing streak.

Le scored his fourth goal of the season in the 18th minute from eight yards after Tony Choi had dribbled through the defense along the right endline.

Although Seattle Pacific (4-1-5) finished with a 10-2 edge in corner kicks, the offense could not generate a clear scoring chance until the 86th minute. A long throw by Colin Kosco was flicked into the goalmouth, but James Coggan's sliding six-yard attempt flashed wide right.

None of Joshua Vasquez' three saves were difficult in posting the shutout. Apart from the goal, SPU keeper Kellen Rosten was not seriously threatened in his four credited saves.

The Falcons, who had tied their previous four outings, are now winless in five games, their longest such run since 1970.

Cascio's Goal Gives SU 1-0 OT Victory (9/24/07)

Jason Cascio took a chest pass from Ian Walsh and found the corner of the net with 5:52 remaining in the second overtime to give Seattle University a 1-0 win over Montana State Billings Monday in a GNAC conference game at Championship Field.

Elsewhere GNAC teams split a pair of non-conference games. Matt Pele's penalty kick at 87:31 snapped a 1-1 tie and gave Western Washington a 2-1 home win over Grand Canyon. Meanwhile at Lacey, Pacific Lutheran blanked Saint Martin's 5-0.

Cascio's goal was only his third of the season. Last year, he led the conference with 16 in winning Player-of-the-Year honors.

Cascio's shot was one of 17 for the Redhawks, who had a 9-1 advantage in the second half and overtimes. SU (7-2, 2-1) also was awarded 10 of the 12 corner kicks.

The Yellowjackets (7-2-1, 3-2-1) took only six shots in the contest as Eric Forner helped control the center of the field for Seattle by winning countless defensive headers and distributing the ball to the wings and forwards on offense.

In goal, Jordan Jennings posted his second shutout earning two saves and also punching away several crosses.

Western Washington matched its combined win total for the last two seasons with its fifth victory against four losses by defeating Grand Canyon (3-4-3).

Western's Cody Hagler opened the scoring with his first goal in nearly six years, getting the final touch in a goalmouth scramble in the 43rd minute.

Hagler's last goal came on Oct. 31, 2001, in the final game of the 2001 season, a 1-0 win over Seattle Pacific. He led the team with six goals and five assists that year, but then missed most of three seasons with injuries and was out of school the last two years before returning to Western for a graduate degree.

Grand Canyon equalized in the 83rd minute as Daniel Sabillon headed home Matheau Hall's cross from the right end line for his fourth goal of the campaign.

But with 2:31 remaining, Western was awarded a penalty kick for an elbowing foul in the penalty area, and Pele slotted the ball into the left side of the goal for the game-winner.

Western had a slim 14-12 edge in shots and GCU had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Michael Lockwood had five saves for the Vikings, who travel to Saint Martin's Saturday.

The Saints fell to 2-8 with their loss and now have been outscored 29-3 in their inaugural season. Ryan Hanna and Mike Ferguson each scored twice for the Lutes, who outshot SMU 19-1 in the contest.

Vikings Shutout MSUB; SPU Ties Again (9/22/07)

Western Washington scored three second-half goals in defeating previously unbeaten Montana State Billings 3-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

In a non-conference game in Seattle, Seattle Pacific battled to a 1-1 draw with Grand Canyon. The Falcons are now 4-0-5, tying their last four contests all by the same score. They've played overtime in six of their nine contests.

Western Washington, which snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 4-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the GNAC with its victory. MSUB dropped to 7-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in GNAC action.  The Yellowjackets had given up just two goals in its first eight games.

Western scored twice in just over three minutes midway through the second half as Chris Jepson found the left corner with a shot from 35 yards in the 65th minute, and Samir Vejo scored from 10 yards on a pass from Michael Ricci in the 68th minute.

The Vikings, who outshot MSUB 20-8, scored again in the 75th minute as Gibson Bardsley took a long pass from Oliver Wellman and put it in from 10 yards.

It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Bardsley, tying him for most goals by a freshman since 1985.  Vejo now has four goals and it was Jepson's first.

Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood made two saves in posting his second shutout of the season and the Vikings' third overall. The shutout ended a GNAC-record string of scoring in eight consecutive games by MSUB forward Sam Charles.

James Coggan's second-half goal kept nationally fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific undefeated before a capacity crowd at Interbay Stadium.

Coggan connected on his fourth goal of the season in the 72nd minute to pull SPU even. The Antelopes' (3-3-3) had taken an early lead through Daniel Sabillion.

Seattle Pacific outshot GCU 4-0 in the two overtime periods, with two strikes nearly winning the game.

Jeff Hallenbeck¹s 18-yard drive grazed the crossbar in the opening two minutes of extra time and Colin Kosco's header from a Doug Whitney free kick was thwarted by 'Lopes keeper Vincent Licciardi with a dive to the left post in the 107th minute.

Coggan took a pass from Justin Abel and rifled a 15-yard drive into the upper left corner.

Sabillion found the lower right corner in the ninth minute off an assist from Albert Escovar.

The Falcons' Matt Kemper cracked a shot off the crossbar in the first half.

SPU, which finished with a 15-10 edge in shots and 9-0 in corner kicks equaled its school record for most ties with 11 regular season games still remaining.

Seattle Pacific Earns Draw With Late Goal; Charles Extends Streak To Eight (9/20/07)

Matt Kemper's header with 67 seconds remaining in regulation kept fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific unbeaten with a 1-1 tie against undefeated Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer game Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (4-0-4) matched a team record with their third successive draw all by 1-1 scores. Five of their eight contests, including a scoreless deadlock earlier this season at Cal State Stanislaus, have required overtime.

The Yellowjackets (7-0-1) had taken the lead on the 12th goal of the year by Sam Charles in the 79th minute. Charles extended his own GNAC record for most consecutive games with a goal to eight with the score.

Kemper leaped to nod home a 35-yard free kick from Doug Whitney. It was only the second goal allowed by MSUB this season.

Both teams fired shots off the metalwork. Alec Nelson of SPU hit the crossbar in the 38th minute, and he had also seen an earlier attempt cleared off the line by a Jackets' defender in the eighth minute.

A bending, 14-yard drive by Charles caromed off the left post in the 12th minute.

Lurking at the far post, Charles headed in a corner kick from Chris Cornish at 78:34.

Kellen Rosten made five saves, including a full-stretch stop of Charles with 13 minutes left in regulation. MSUB keeper Sander Tollefson made three stops. Each team finished with 11 shots.

Seattle Blanks Western Washington 1-0 (9/17/07)

Midfielder John Fishbaugher scored the only goal in the 54th minute as nationally ranked Seattle University blanked Western Washington 1-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings, who have played six of their first seven games at home, dropped to 3-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 league.  They have lost four of their last five games after 2-0 start.

Seattle, ranked No.21 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25, improved to 6-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in GNAC action.  The Redhawks had split their previous four games after a 3-0 start.

The only goal of the game came nine minutes into the second half when defender Sean Rawson played a cross from the left side that got through a pair of Western defenders and was booted in by Fishbaugher from five yards out. It was Fishbaugher's second goal of the season.

Seattle had a 19-7 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood made six saves and Seattle's Emerson DeOliveira had two saves in recording his second shutout of the campaign.

Western, which was blanked for the first time this fall, next hosts Montana State Billings on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a GNAC counter.

Charles Breaks GNAC Record In 2-0 MSUB Victory (9/16/07)

Sam Charles scored two goals and set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record as Montana State Billings defeated Saint Martin's 2-0 Sunday in a men's soccer conference game at the College of Technology Field in Billings.

The win was the eighth in a row for the Yellowjackets, including seven this season. MSUB, which has recorded a school-record six shutouts this fall, improved to 3-0 in the GNAC.

Charles has scored a goal in all seven games, breaking the previous GNAC record for most consecutive games with a goal of six set by Seattle University's Jason Cascio last September.

Charles got the only goal MSUB needed in the seventh minute, connecting on a long arcing pass from teammate Scott Dixon.  Going one-on-one with Saint keeper Zac Lubin, Charles converted from 10 yards for his 10th goal of the season.

The MSUB sophomore found the net again at the 19:13 mark.  Beating the Saint back line, he took the ball around two defenders in scoring an insurance goal.

“We were mentally ready for this game and didn't allow many chances for Saint Martin's to get past our defense today,” said Yellowjacket head coach Dan McNally.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 22-3 with a 7-2 shots-on-goal advantage.  Lubin made five saves while Sander Tollefson tackled two in earning his fifth shutout of the season. Saint Martin's fell to 2-7, including 0-3 with the loss.

MSU Billings Upsets Seattle University (9/14/07)

Sam Charles scored an unassisted goal in the 69th minute as unbeaten Montana State Billings stunned nationally 21st ranked Seattle University 1-0 Friday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Billings.

Meanwhile, in a non-conference Far West Regional game, fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific and Grand Canyon battled to a 1-1 standoff. It was the third tie in seven games for the Falcons, who nevertheless remained unbeaten.

At Billings, Greg McKeever drilled a free kick from deep inside MSUB territory down the length of the field that was picked up by Charles in the Redhawks' box.

Moving left to right Charles sailed the ball past Seattle keeper Jordan Jennings for the only goal of the game as the Yellowjackets improved to 6-0, including 2-0 in the GNAC. The Redhawks, the defending Far West Region champions, fell to 5-2, losing their conference opener.

MSUB has shutout five of its six opponents, outscoring them by a combined margin of 16-1 with Charles accounting for nine of the goals.

After Charles goal, Seattle had an opportunity to get the equalizer. But with less than one minute left in regulation, Yellowjacket keeper Sander Tollefson made a diving save, his fourth of the game, on a shot by 2006 GNAC scoring champion Jason Cascio to secure the victory.

The shot was one of 11 by the Redhawks, who outshot the Yellowjackets 11-8. The Redhawks also took three of the five corners. Jennings had one save for SU.

Justin Abel scored with 5:49 left in regulation on a shot from 20 yards to earn Seattle Pacific its draw with Grand Canyon.

Playing in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees, the two teams went the remainder of the regulation and overtime without a goal. They finished with 16 shots apiece.

Daniel Sabillion had opened the scoring for the Antelopes (1-3-2) with 98 seconds left in the first half.

Abel's goal, his first of the season, finished a sequence which began with a corner kick by Alec Nelson to Drew Macha. Seattle Pacific's Kellen Rosten saved seven shots by Canyon, which got six stops from Vincent Licciadri.

Seattle Pacific's seven-game unbeaten streak is its longest to start a season since 1987.

Seattle Pacific Ties Cal State L.A. (9/11/07)

Jeff Coggan's goal early in the first half put Seattle Pacific in the driver's seat, but host Cal State LA answered midway through the second half and both defenses endured through two overtime periods as the Far West Region foes battled to a 1-1 draw in a nonconference men's soccer contest Tuesday night at Jesse Owens Track.

In the only other game Tuesday in the GNAC, Saint Martin's (2-6) was shutout by Notre Dame de Namur 2-0.

Coggan netted his second goal of the season in the 19th minute to give unbeaten and nationally fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific (4-0-2) a 1-0 lead.

That lead held up through the half, but the Golden Eagles found the back of the net in the second frame. LA's Morten Marthinsen scored the equalizer in the 65th minute, his fifth goal of the season off an assist from John Massaquoi.

The CSLA goal was somewhat of a fluke.

"It was a Hail Mary shot - blind - over the shoulder from 25 yards out that Kellen (Rosten) easily could have covered, but it hit an L.A. player on the chest at the 18 and ricocheted to the opposite side of the net giving Kellen no chance," SPU coach Cliff McCrath said.

Both teams turned to their goalkeepers the rest of the way. Rosten was credited with eight saves, including five in the two overtimes to preserve the tie. Cal State LA's Tobias Hummel made six saves, including three of them off Jeff Hallenbeck.

"We hit the post in the second OT and we also had a 2 versus 1 breakaway that was an easy chip over an extended keeper but Hallenbeck cracked it right to the keeper. But it was a great game nonetheless," McCrath added.

Cal State LA (3-2-2), who dropped out of this week's national poll after being ranked sixth last week, has won just once in its past five matches after winning its first two.

At Lacey, Notre Dame de Namur scored two second-half goals to beat the Saints. Sean Fogt broke the ice with a goal at 73:57, then the Argos (3-4) needed just two more minutes to make it 2-0 on a goal by Emmanuel Vasquez

Notre Dame outshot SMU 19-13 in the contest. David Meherg had nine saves in recording the shutout for the Argos. Zac Lubin stopped seven shots for the Saints.

MSUB Gets Early Goals In 2-1 Victory (9/10/07)

Montana State Billings got goals from Sam Charles and Jarred Weisen in the final 11 minutes of the first half and then held on to defeat Western Washington 2-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer opener for both schools Monday at the College of Technology Field in Billings.

MSUB improved to 5-0-0, though it had a string of five shutouts snapped.  The Yellowjackets, who are off to the best start in their 12-year history, have won six straight games over the last two seasons.

Trailing 2-0, forward Samir Vejo scored Western's only goal in the 51st minute on a free kick from 20 yards out.  That was the first goal that MSUB had allowed this season and stopped its scoreless streak at 533:12.

The Yellowjackets scored their two goals during a span of 3:28 of the first half.  Charles tallied his eighth goal of the season in the 35th minute, getting loose on a breakaway after taking a long over the top pass from Scott Dixon.  Weisen found the left corner of the net from 12 yards out in the 38th minute. Jeremy DeHerrera was credited with an assist.

MSUB goalkeeper Sandy Tollefson, who leads the GNAC with a 0.25 goals against average, had two saves, his eighth and ninth of the year.

"This was an important win for us," MSUB coach Dan McNally said. "We looked a little sloppy early in the second half. I think we were a bit nervous as this was a big game for us. But, we were able to hold it together and got a good win."

“We really showed our inexperience and youth today,” said Western coach Travis Connell, whose team fell to 3-3.   “This is a tough place to play and we let in some goals against the run of play when we were dominating in the first half.

“We actually played pretty well overall, but it wasn't enough when you put yourself into a 2-0 hole.”

The Vikings ended up with a 9-6 shot advantage and took three of the five corner kicks. Only two of MSUB's six shots were "on goal" and Viking keeper Michael Lockwood did not earn a save.

Mertens Scores Lone Goal In SU Win (9/9/07)

Cameron Mertens scored early in the second half and Seattle University improved to 5-1 with a 1-0 shutout of Notre Dame de Namur Sunday at Championship Field.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half before the Redhawks final broke through with a goal in the 62nd minute.

Mertens finished a breakaway on a ball over the top from John Fishbaugher. The goal was Mertens' second of the season as well as his second consecutive game-winning goal.

Emerson DeOliveira earned his second shutout of the season and improved to 3-1 in goal. He recorded two saves in the second half to keep a zero on the scoreboard for the visiting team.

Seattle seemed to be in control most of the match, but could not find the back of the net until Mertens goal. Jason Cascio had four shots, two of which were on goal.

Yellowjackets Extend Streak To Five (9/8/07)

Sam Charles scored three goals and also earned an assist as Montana State Billings blanked the University of Mary 5-0 Saturday extending its two-season win streak to five, all via shutouts.

The Yellowjackets (4-0), off to their best start in the 12-year history of the program, dominated the Marauders offensively outshooting them 25-1.

MSUB got on the board quickly scoring at 9:34 as Scott Dixon punched a corner kick to Charles who headed the ball past the Marauders keeper.

A through ball from Dixon at mid-field followed by a last second pass by Charles allowed Chris Andre to tap the ball into the net at the 17:55 mark.  The goal was Andres third of the season.

MSUB then added three second-half goals, the first two by Charles on a penalty kick and on a shot after taking a cross from Josh Hernandez right in the front of the net. Matt D'Hont added the final goal in the 90th minute.

“This was the best game we have ever played in my three years at MSU Billings,” said Yellowjacket head coach Dan McNally.  “It was a team effort and I think we defended the ball really well in today's win.”

Matthew Mitchell played the first 85:58 in goal and wasn't required to make a save as the Jackets extended their team scoreless streak to 482:29 minutes.

SPU Edges Saint Martin's in GNAC Debut (9/7/07)

Jeff Hallenbeck's first-half goal was enough to send 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 1-0 win over Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opening men's soccer game for both teams Friday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

In a non-conference game in Bellingham, Western Washington defeated Pacific (Ore.) 2-0 as midfielder Brendan Quilici had a goal and an assist.

Seattle Pacific (4-0-1) posted its third shutout in its win over the Saints (2-5), although keeper Kellen Rosten was only required to make one save.

Hallenbeck scored his second goal of the season in the 37th minute. Following a corner kick, Colin Kosco put the ball back into the box and Hallenbeck headed it home from eight yards.

Hallenbeck has now either scored or assisted on the Falcons' last four goals over three games.

Seattle Pacific finished with an 11-3 advantage in shots and 8-2 in corners.
Saint goalie Zac Lubin made seven saves. All four SPU wins have been by one goal.

Western Washington (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak in its win at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

Forward Samir Vejo gave Western a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, hammering in a rebound off a shot by Quilici.

Quilici scored in the 76th minute on a point-blank effort into the right corner following a shot by midfielder Kenny Parker. Quilici has three goals this season and Vejo has two.

The Vikings had a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood made four saves in notching the first shutout of his two-year career.

Redhawks Beat No. 6 Cal State LA (9/4/07)

Cameron Mertens broke away from his defender and took advantage of a nice pass by Eric Forner to give the Seattle University a 1-0 victory over Cal State L.A. (2-1-1) Tuesday afternoon at Jesse Owens Track in Los Angeles.
