AMARILLO, Texas – After a windy opening round at the La Paloma Golf Club, it is Simon Fraser that leads the GNAC at the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's West/South Central Super Regional in Amarillo, Texas.

Of the 20-team field, the Clan ended the day in 13th place after four of their five players managed to club better than a 5-under par. As a team, Simon Fraser combined to shoot a 15-over par 299, which is just five strokes off sixth-place UC Colorado Springs.

Despite bogeying on his first hole, sophomore Sy Lovan rebounded to lead all GNAC players with a 2-over par 73. The sophomore managed four birdies on the day and currently sits in a seven-way tie for 23rd. In his fourth tournament appearance, senior Chris Crisologo is second on Simon Fraser after firing a 3-over par 74. Crisologo, the three-time GNAC Player of the Year, managed three birdies on the back nine move up to a tie for 30th place.

Appearing in its 20th straight Super Regional, Western Washington shot a 316 and sit two strokes behind Colorado State-Pueblo for 19th. Battling heavy wind conditions the entire morning, freshman Brody Bonfilio and junior Cody Roth paced the Vikings as both carded a 5-over par 76 to sit in a 14-way tie for 49th.

Despite carding a 4-over par on the front nine, Bonfilio rebounded for two birdies on the final nine holes to finish with three total birdies. Roth saw his best score come on hole six, where he managed an eagle on the par five. Senior Adam Barker finished four strokes behind the WWU duo with a 9-over par 80.

Representing Concordia as the first-ever Cavalier to play in the NCAA Division II regional tournament, senior Nick Huff finished the day at 10-over par 81 after connecting for nine pars and a birdie. Huff, who is tied for 94th, is one of eight players that were selected to compete individually in this year’s super regional.

Play will resume on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. (Central) with the second of three rounds to be played. St. Mary’s (Texas) Eric Valenzuela leads all players with a 5-under par 66 while his team sits in first place at 2-over par.

The top five teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regional will move on to the NCAA Division II Championships Finals, which begin May 21 in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at The Shoals Golf Club.
