Clan Take 17th Place, Vikings Finish 18th At Super Regional

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Simon Fraser and Western Washington battled back and forth over three rounds, placing 17th and 18th, respectively, at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf West/South Central Super Regional on the University Golf Course.

Junior Kevin Vigna was the story of the tournament for Simon Fraser, shooting the three most consistent rounds of any GNAC golfer. Vigna finished with round scores of 72, 71 and 71 to tie for 14th place individually. The highlight of his round came on hole 15 when he eagled the par-five, 572 yard hole.

Sophomore Chris Crisologo finished just a stroke back of his teammate Vigna, tying for 16th place. He shot his lowest round of the tournament on Wednesday, carding a 2-under-par 69.

The Clan shot its lowest round of the tournament in round three with a score of 293. Senior Bret Thompson shot his lowest round of 76, followed by sophomore Marcus Brown at 77. Sophomore Michael Caan finished with an 80 in the third round.

Western Washington finished just two strokes back of Simon Fraser at 897, finishing in 18th place. Junior Brett Johnson and freshman Michael Butler tied for 44th place with three-round scores of 223. Junior Chris Hatch shot a 225, followed by junior Jeffrey Marcum at 227 and freshman Cody Roth at 234.

Chico State took the super regional title, followed by Oklahoma Christian and Dallas Baptist. The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from the regional will advance to the finals May 17-21, at Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colorado.
