Clan Open Spring With Another Top-4 Finish

PORTLAND, Ore. – In the team’s first competition of the spring, the Simon Fraser men’s golf team picked up right where it left off from 2015. Competing at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational, the Clan placed second overall in an 18 team field on Mar. 14 and 15 in Livermore, Calif.

Simon Fraser finished with a team score of 888 in the three round tournament, 10 strokes back of first place Chico State. The Clan were led by a second place finish by junior Kevin Vigna, who shot even par 216, just one shot back for first place. Sophomore Chris Crisologo tied for 11th, shooting 5-over par 221. Sophomore Michael Caan also finished in the top-20, tying for 16th place after carding a 7-over par 223.

Through five tournaments this season, Simon Fraser has placed in the top-four in each. The Clan now have three second place finishes to go along with a third and fourth place. Crisologo leads the team this season with an average score of 70.83 in his four tournaments.

Saint Martin’s and Northwest Nazarene joined the Clan at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational. The Saints tied for sixth place with a score of 897. Senior Kevin Cullen led the team with a 10th place finish, carding a score of 4-over par 220. Sophomore Andrew Raab and junior Austin Spicer tied for 22nd, shooting 8-over par 224.

Northwest Nazarene placed 14th at the tournament with a score of 927. Junior Jack Strickland put together a strong performance, carding a 5-over par 221 for an 11th place finish. Senior Kenyan Fanslow tied for 43rd with a score of 229.

The Crusaders took part in their first competition of the spring a week prior, facing College of Idaho in a dual meet. The Crusaders easily took care of business in the one-round dual, defeating the Yotes by 31 strokes. Junior Ian Briske and Fanslow tied for medalist honors, shooting 2-under par 70. Senior Michael Delie took third place, just one stroke back of the top two. Northwest Nazarene had all seven golfers finish in the top-eight as they shot 4-under par 284 as a team.

Action picks up over the final month of the season before the GNAC Championships as there will be a tournament each of the next four weeks. Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Simon Fraser and Western Washington will each compete in the CBU Invitational on Mar. 21 and 22 in Corona, Calif. Concordia returns to action on Mar. 28 and 29 at the Northwest Nazarene Invitational in Nampa, Idaho.
