WWU's Boag Qualifies For National Meet

Boag carded a final round 73 Wednesday and finished the tournament with a three-over par 219 at The Classic Club, a par 72, 7,100-yard layout in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Vikings finished in a tie for seventh with Grand Canyon, missing out on one of the five team berths. WWU had a team score of 299 in the final round and finished with a 893 total.
Sonoma State claimed the team title with a total of 863, including a four-under-par 284 Wednesday. The Seawolves' Janssen Todd won medalist honors, finishing the tournament at two-under par 214, including a 70 in the final round.
Also earning team berths were Western New Mexico (880), Cal State Stanislaus (881), Chico State (886) and Cal State Monterey Bay (887).
Jon Klingensmith of Colorado Christian tied Boag for seventh and also earned a trip to Noblesville, Indiana, for the national meet later this month.
Boag was the only WWU player to finish in the Top 20. The Vikings' Xavier Dailly and Nick Varelia tied for 34th with 224 totals. Dailly shot a 74 and Varelia had a 77 Wednesday.
Saint Martin's finished 19th shooting a final round of 316 for a total of 943.

Vikings On Bubble For National Berth
Western Washington, which was the first-day leader at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Super Central/West Regional, is in a three-way tie for fifth place after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
Five teams will qualify for the NCAA national tournament from the regional which is taking place at The Classic Club, a par 72, 7,100-yard layout in Palm Desert, Calif.
After posting a team score of 291 on Monday, Western slipped to a 303 on Tuesday and its 594 total trails leader Chico State by 17 shots. Sonoma State trails Chico by two, Western New Mexico is five back and Cal State Monterey trails by 15, just two ahead of the Vikings.
Western Washington is tied with Cal State Stanislaus and Colorado - Colorado Springs. Saint Martin's had a team total of 310 Tuesday and remained in 20th place at 627.
Brandon Harkins of Chico and Gordon Webb of Western New Mexico are the individual leaders with four-under par 140 totals.
WWU's Patrick Boag ranks 11th at two-over 146 and Nick Varelia is tied for 15th at three-over 147. Both players had 75s Tuesday.
"Today just wasn't a good day for us," said WWU coach Steve Card. "We got off to a really bad start, but we battled it out.
"Now, we can be upset or embrace the opportunity that we have for Wednesday. It's right there in front of us, if we play well. This is the most exciting day of the year, with everything on the line. This is what we've worked for all season."

Vikings Grab First-Round Lead
Western Washington is the surprising first-day leader at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Super Central/West Regional taking place at The Classic Club, a par 72, 7,100-yard layout in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Vikings, the fifth seed from the West Region, shot an opening-round 3-over par 291 Monday. Just five strokes separate the top five teams with Chico State second at 292, Western New Mexico third at 293, Sonoma State fourth at 294 and Dixie State fifth at 295.
Chico State is the No.1 seed in the West Region and Sonoma State is the defending national champion. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Division II national tournament later this month in Noblesville, Ind., which is located just north of Indianapolis.
“We played really solid golf today,” said WWU coach Steve Card. “The key was getting off to a good start and we did that.”
Two Vikings are among the Top 10 in medalist play. Patrick Boag is in a two-way tie for sixth after shooting a 1-under 71, and Nick Varelia is in a six-way tie for eighth at even par 72.
Boag had four birdies and three bogeys in his round. Varelia double-bogeyed his first hole, but bounced back and had three birdies on the back nine.
Western's Brian Barhanovich and Xavier Dailly had 74s and are among six players tied for 20th.
Tied for the individual lead at 3-under 69 are Trevor Blair from Cal State Stanislaus and Gordon Webb from Western New Mexico.
Saint Martin's had a team score of 317 and is last among the 20 team qualifiers. The Saints' Justin Lanman shot an even par 72 and is tied for eighth.

Dailly, Vikings Win GNAC Titles
Xavier Dailly of Western Washington shot a four-under par 67 to finish with a tournament-record score of four-under 209 leading Western Washington to its third consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference golf championship Tuesday at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course.
Dailly edged teammate Julian Peters by one shot for medalist honors. Peters was one of two golfers to card a GNAC tournament Coeur d'Alene course record of 66 Tuesday, breaking the one-day old record of 67 set by WWU's Sam Ayotte in Monday's opening round.
Dailly, who led by two strokes after the first two rounds, sank an eight-foot par putt on the final hole for a 67 and the individual title avoiding a playoff with Peters, the only Viking to be on all three GNAC title-winning squads.
Saint Martin's Michael Jaeger also carded a 66 and finished in third with a 215 total, six shots back of Dailly. Patrick Boag of Western Washington finished fourth with a 218 total after shooting 73 Tuesday. Justin Lanman of Saint Martin's was fifth with a 219 score, including a one-under par 70 Tuesday.
Western Washington set team records for lowest round and lowest 54-hole score. Its 10-under par 274 team score Tuesday bettered its record-score of 283 it set Monday.
The Vikings broke the former 54-hole record they set last season by 22 shots, finishing with a 850 total, 28 ahead of second-place Saint Martin's, which also bettered the previous team record for lowest round with a two-under-par 282 in the final round.
“It was really nice to see our guys play so well,” said 17th-year WWU coach Steve Card. “It's the best we've played all spring.
“It was very important for us to come over here and play well, not only to win the conference championship, but to gain confidence for regionals.”
Northwest Nazarene finished third at 918 as Zach Grunig and Rowdy Hope tied for 10th with 228 totals. Hope had a 73 and Grunig carded a 77 Tuesday.
Montana State Billings ended up fourth at 927. Kyle Armstrong led the Yellowjackets, placing ninth with a 226 total, including a 74 Tuesday.

Dailly, Vikings on Top in GNAC
Xavier Dailly of Western Washington shot rounds of 72 and 70 Monday to grab a two-shot lead after 36 holes of the third-annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference golf championships at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course.
Dailly sits at even par 142 going into Tuesday's third and final round on the 6,803 yard par 71 layout. He is two shots ahead of teammate Julian Peters, who had a pair of 72s.
The Vikings' Patrick Boag is in third place three shots back at 145 after rounds of 74 and 71. WWU's Sam Ayotte, the first-round leader with a 67, is tied with Zach Dietz of Saint Martin's for fourth at 146.
Ayotte fired a GNAC tournament Coeur d'Alene course record 67 in the opening round, but then skied to a 79. Dietz carded rounds of 74 and 72.
Ayotte's 67, which included a eagle 2 on the 269-yard 17th hole, bettered a pair of 69s in last year's tournament by WWU's Jake Koppenberg and Jeff Allen of Montana State Billings.
The single-round record for the GNAC tournament, regardless of the course, is a 65 set two years ago at Spokane's Indian Canyon.
Western Washington, which set a tournament record in the opening round with a 283 team score, has a 20-stroke lead in the team competition and has all but wrapped up its third consecutive conference team title.
The Vikings added a 293 team total in the second round for a total of 576. Saint Martin's is second at 596 on rounds of 304 and 292. Northwest Nazarene is third with a 615 total on rounds of 315 and 300, one ahead of MSU Billings, which had rounds of 312 and 304 for a 616 total.

Northwest Nazarene Finishes Third, VandeHey Eighth at C of I Invitational
The Crusaders carded a team score of 308 and finished with a 911 total. Concordia (Ore.) beat host College of Idaho 880-893 to win the team title.
VandeHey, who came into the tournament averaging 80.8 and had had only one round all year below 77, finished eighth with a 54-hole total of 226, including rounds of 75, 78 and 73. Only three of his previous 12 rounds had been in the 70s.
NNU placed three golfers in the Top 15 as Zach Grunig finished 11th with a 227 total and Rowdy Hope finished 15th with a 230 score. Hope had a 74 Tuesday.
Concordia's Jed Dalton fired his third consecutive one-under-par 71 to win medalist honors with a 213 score.

Western Washington 10th; SMU's Lanman 26th at Stanislaus
Xavier Dailly had a team-best round of even par 72 Tuesday and Western Washington climbed two spots to finish 10th in the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at the Turlock Golf and Country Club.
Nick Varelia was the Vikings' highest finisher placing 36th with a 54-hole score of 225. Varelia carded a 76 in Tuesday's final round.
Justin Lanman of Saint Martin's was the highest GNAC placer ending up with a 54-hole score of 223, including a 76 on Tuesday. He placed 26th. The Saints finished 13th.
Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Stanislaus tied for the team title with 871 scores. San Bernardino's Gene Webster Jr. was the landslide individual winner finishing at 18-under 198 including a nine-under 63 Tuesday. He finished 12 shots ahead of the field.

WWU's Dailly Fifth in Grand Canyon Tournament
Xavier Dailly of Western Washington is in fifth place after 36 holes of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz.
Dailly had rounds of 68 and 71 Monday for a five-under par 139 total. Gene Webster Jr. of Cal State San Bernardino is the leader with a 134 total. Three players are tied for second at 138.
Cal State Stanislaus has an 11-stroke lead over Chico State in the team race with a 559 total. The Vikings are 11th at 582, Saint Martin's is 14th at 601 and Northwest Nazarene is 17th at 620.
Dailly is the only GNAC player in the Top 30 going into Tuesday's final round.

Western Washington Finishes Fifth at Argonaut Invitational

Western Washington shot the third lowest team round of the day and moved up two spots to finish fifth at the Notre Dame de Namur University Argonaut Men's Golg Invitational which wrapped up Tuesday at the Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif.
The Vikings, ranked No.10 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25, shot 291 for a 54-hole total of 22-over par 886.
Cal State Stanislaus, which was second after Monday's two rounds, seven shots out of the lead, fired a 9-under 279 to win by five shots at four-under 860.
WWU's Xavier Dailly shot three-under 69 to place third in medalist play at four-under 212. It was his highest finish of the season and his fifth Top 10 placing in seven tournaments.
Also in the Top 20 was the Vikings' Julian Peters who tied for 12th at 219. Peters carded a one-under par 71 on the 6,927 yard layout Tuesday.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Scott Yeakel took medalist honors by one stroke at eight-under 208. Trevor Blair from Cal State Stanislaus was second at 209. Both players had 69s in the final round.
Saint Martin's finished 12th with a team score of 919. SMU's Zach Dietz was 23rd with a 224 total. Simon Fraser placed 14th at 934. The Clan was led by Adam Karim, who ended up 39th at 228.

MSUB Ties For First In Yellowjacket Invite
Montana State Billings and Rocky Mountain tied for first-place in the MSUB Yellowjacket Invitational Thursday at the Eaglerock Golf Course in Billings. Friday's second round was snowed out.
MSUB's Jeff Allen and Rocky's D.J. Kovach shot one-over-par 73s to share medallist honors.

Crusaders Finish Fifth in LCSC Golf
Northwest Nazarene posted a second round of 305 to finish fifth at the Lewis-Clark State Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Clarkston Golf & Country Club.
Zach Grunig led the Crusaders with a 73 in the final round. In a tie for sixth after the opening round on Monday, the Crusaders counted scores of 77 from Rowdy Hope and Aaron VanDeHey, 78 from Jeff McDonald, and Grunig's 73 to move up one spot in the standings among the 11 teams.
Also playing for the Crusaders were Leon Vasquez with an 85 and Tanner Roggenkamp with an 89.
University of Victoria won the team title with rounds of 295-295 for 590, while DJ Kovach from Rocky Mountain College won medallist honors with rounds of 68-75 for 143.

Hope Fires 75 for NNU In First Round
Rowdy Hope opened with a 3-over par 75 and Northwest Nazarene sits in a tie for sixth place after the opening round of the Lewis-Clark State Invitational Monday afternoon at the Clarkston Golf & Country Club.
Hope led the Crusaders to an opening round 313, which finds NNU tied with Whitworth for sixth place in the team standings. Hope is tied for eighth individually over the 6,680-yard, par 72 layout.
Scores for the Crusaders included Zach Grunig and Leon Vasquez each with 79, Jeff McDonald and Aaron VanDeHey each with 80, and Tanner Roggenkamp, playing as an individual, with an 84. The second and final round will begin on Tuesday

Montana State Billings Finishes 12th at Hayward
Montana State Billings placed 12th in the Cal State East Bay Invitational golf tournament Monday and Tuesday.
The Yellowjackets carded a 54-hole team score of 1032. Strong winds and rain sent scores soaring, especially in the first two rounds that were played Monday.
The winning individual score was a one-over-par 217 by Brandon Taylor of Cal State Stanislaus. Jacob Harr was MSUB's top finisher, placing 54th with a score of 250.

Vikings Seventh at San Bernardino
Western Washington got balanced scoring in finishing seventh in the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic at the Arrowhead Country Club Tuesday.
The Vikings had rounds of 289 and 290 in Tuesday's action to finish the 54-hole tournament with a score of 871. Tuesday's first round was a completion of Monday's round halted by darkness.
Cal State Monterey Bay won the tournament with a score of 848. Barry, Fla., and Chico State tied for second with totals of 851. Gene Webster Jr. of CSU San Bernardino won medalist honors with a 14-under 196 total firing rounds of 69, 63 and 64.
WWU's top four players were separated by just four shots as Xavier Dailly tied for 28th with a 218 total and Julian Peters and Nick Varelia finished 31st, just a stroke back at 219. Patrick Boag tied for 44th with a 222 total.
Varelia had rounds of 76 and a even-par 70 on Tuesday, while Dailly shot 73 and 71 and Peters carded rounds of 71 and 73. Boag had rounds of 73 and 76. Adam Brisben, who was WWU's 36-hole leader at 144, had an 82 in the final round to finish 59th at 226.
Saint Martin's finished 14th with a 897 team total. Olof Rosborg finished 41st with a 221 total, including 71 in Tuesday's final round.

Simon Fraser finished 11th out of 13 teams Tuesday in the Point Loma Invitational golf tournament at the Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamil, Calif.
The Clan had a final round of 305 to finish with a 951 team total on the par-71, 6,834 yard layout. Host Point Loma Nazarene won the 54-hole event with a team score of 881.
PLN's Ryan Ellerbrock was the medalist with a two-over par 215. Adam Karim led SFU with a 232 total, tying for 25th.

Top Round Moves Vikings Up To Third
Western Washington posted the best score of the final day Tuesday to move up three spots and finish third among 13 teams at the Cal State Bakersfield Spring Invitational at Bakersfield's Seven Oaks Country Club.
The Vikings, ranked No.7 in the latest Golf World/NIKE Golf/Golf Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25, shot 3-over par 291 for a 54-hole score of 886.
Cal State Stanislaus, which fired an 11-under 277 in Monday's second round, took team honors at 4-over 868 (300). NCAA I host Cal State Bakersfield placed second at 874 (293), six strokes back.
"Out goal was to win the day and we did that," said Western coach Steve Card . "Yesterday was our first competitive tournament in four months and we came out a little tentative . Today, I was very happy with our comeback."
Western's Xavier Dailly, who eagled two of his first four holes, shot 3-under 69 to finish fifth in medallist play at 1-over 217.
Two Vikings, Adam Brisben and Julian Peters tied for 19th at 225. Brisben birded three of his last five holes to card a 73,while Peters had a 72.
Cal State Bakersfield's Kyle Morrison took medallist honors at 7-under 209. shooting a 71 on Tuesday.
Simon Fraser finished 12th with a 54-hole team score of 944. Gavin Symmans led the Clan, finishing 43rd with a score of 231.

Western Washington Ties For Team Title at Grand Canyon
It was the first regular-season championship for the Vikings since 2006, a stretch of 25 events. They tied for first with Oklahoma City in the 18-team field with a 54-hole total of 863, after shooting a final-round 1-over par 289. WWU was awarded the first-place trophy for having the best fifth-man score.
Western held a three-stroke lead over Oklahoma City following 36 holes Monday. The Stars closed out the tourney with a 2-under 286.
"It's been a long time," said Western coach Steve Card. "We played pretty solid today and hung on at the end as we let a couple shots slip away."
"We had four guys in the top 10, so it was a great event from that standpoint . We've shown through over first three tournaments that our strength is going to be as a team from one through five."
Chico State placed third at 866 (286) and Colorado-Colorado Springs was fourth at 878 (292).
Varelia fired a 2-under 70 to finish second at 213, and Barhanovich shot an even par 72 to place third at 214. Taking medallist honors at 208 with a final-round 69 was Oklahoma City 's Julian Valenciana.
In all, Western had four players finish among the top 10. Xavier Dailly and Julian Peters tied for eighth at 218 after shooting 72 and 75, respectively, Tuesday.
The Vikings' Sam Ayotte tied for 63rd at 236. His final-round 77 beat out the 79 by Oklahoma City's Clark Collier to give Western the winner's trophy.

MSU Billings Finishes Eighth at North Idaho
Montana State Billings finished eighth at the North Idaho College Invitational Monday in Coeur d'Alene. The Yellowjackets carded a 36-hole score of 638. Community College of Spokane won the tournament with a 596 score.
The Yellowjackets were led by Tyler Nicholas who carded rounds of 74 and 81 for a 155 total and tied for eighth. Travis Gates finished tied for 37th with a 162 score (77 - 85).
Jeff Allen finished tied for 41st with a 164 score on rounds of 86 and 78. Jacob Harr fired rounds of 87 and 78 for a 165 score and finished tied for 47th. KC Kindle shot a 90 and an 86 for a 176 score and tied for 74th.

Vikings Fourth In WWU Invitational
Xavier Dailly shot a four-under par 68 to lead Western Washington to the third best team score of the day Tuesday in the 38th annual Western Washington Invitational men's golf tournament at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
The Vikings carded a four-under-par 284 to finish fourth overall with a 54-hole score of 866. Dixie State, led by Kyle Chappell and Cameron Crawford, shot a 275 to win the tournament by four shots (855-859) over Day 1 leader British Columbia.
Both Chappell, who shot a 65 Tuesday, and Crawford had 208 totals to share medallist honors.
Dailly and Sam Ayotte earned Top 10 finishes for Western Washington. Dailly was seventh with a three-under par 213. Ayotte was ninth at even par 216. After opening with a 78, Ayotte had back-to-back 69s.
Saints Martin's finished eighth with a 884 total, while Montana State Billings was 12th at 921 and Northwest Nazarene finished 13th at 926.

Saints Fourth in WWU Invitational
Conrado Paderes fired rounds of two-under par 70 and four-under-par 68 to lead British Columbia to the 36-hole lead Monday in the Western Washington Invitational men's golf tournament at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Paderes is tied with Kyle Souza of Chico State and Daniel Harrington of Grand Canyon, all at six under on the par-72, 6,561 yard layout. UBC leads Chico State by four shots (570-574) for the team lead.
Saint Martin's (579) is in fourth place, nine shots back of the Thunderbirds, while host Western Washington (582) is seventh, 12 back of the team leaders. Northwest Nazarene is 12th at 620 and MSU Billings is 14th with a 627 team score.
The only GNAC players in the Top 10 are Zach Dietz and Jack Whealdon, both from Saint Martin's. They are tied for seventh with 143 totals, five back of the leaders.
In addition to competing at Bellingham, MSU Billings also had three players entered in the Rocky Mountain College Invitational, which concluded Monday in Billings.
Chris Richter ended up in sixth place out of 67 golfers with a 210 total on rounds of 69, 71 and 70.

Dietz Medalist as Saint Martin's Win Own Invitational
Zach Dietz fired a three-under par 69 to win medalist honors and lead Saint Martin's to a come-from-behind team victory in the Saint Martin’s Men’s Golf Invitational at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey Saturday.
Dietz finished two shots ahead of Sam Holland of the University of Victoria, finishing the 36-hole event with a four-under-par 140.
SMU, which also got ninth place finishes from Justin Lanman (76-71--147) and Jack Whealdon (75-72--147) overcame a seven-shot deficit to win the team title with a score of 583 (299-284).
Cal State Monterey Bay finished second at 586. First-round leader Western Washington placed third at 590 (292-298).
The Vikings were led by Sam Ayotte, who tied for fourth at 145, shooting 76 Saturday after carding a 69 on Friday.
Montana State Billings finished ninth in the 20-team field with a 609 score (307-302). Northwest Nazarene placed 17th at 633 (321-312). Simon Fraser, which will compete in the GNAC beginning next season, was 15th at 623.

Yellowjackets Finish Second at Carroll
Jeff Allen tied for first with a 213 total to lead Montana State Billings to a second-place finish Tuesday at the Carroll College Invitational golf tournament in Helena, Mont.
The Yellowjackets entered the day with a five-stroke lead over Rocky Mountain College, but the Battlin' Bears fired an impressive 281 and 277 in the final two rounds to win the tournament with an 855 total.
The Yellowjackets carded rounds of 291 and 287 Tuesday for an 870 score. Allen posted three consecutive rounds of 71 to finish tied for first along with Marcus Segerstrom and Jacob Good of Rocky. Segerstrom, however, won in the sudden-death playoff.
Also finishing in the Top 10 for the Yellowjackets were Jake Harr and Travis Gates. Harr finished fifth with a 216 total. Gates was ninth with a 222 54-hole score.

MSUB Leads Carroll Tournament By Five Shots
Montana State Billings leads the Carroll College Invitational by five strokes heading into the final day of the tournament. MSUB tallied a 292 team score on Monday, while Rocky Mountain tallied a 297.
Individually, Connor McCracken of Lewis-Clark State and Marcus Segerstrom of Rocky lead the field after carding rounds of 70. Jeff Allen of MSUB is third with a 71, followed by teammates Travis Gates with a 72 and Jake Harr with a 73.
K.C. Kindle carded a 76 and Tyler Nicholas fired a 78. Playing unattached, MSUB's Chris Richter is three strokes off the lead with a 73.
Crusaders Defeat College of Idaho In Dual
Northwest Nazarene opened the 2009-10 golf season with a 321-332 dual match victory over The College of Idaho Monday at Hunter's Point Golf Club in Nampa.
Jeff McDonald led the Crusaders with 77, while Aaron VanDeHey and Zach Grunig each shot 79. Rowdy Hope completed the five-count-four scoring NNU line-up with an 86. Leon Vasquez shot 91 and Tanner Roggenkamp, playing as an individual, fired an 87.
C of I's Tyler Thurston grabbed medalist honors with a 75 to lead the Coyotes. Kasey Allen shot 82, Jeff Davies had 85, and both Casey Dyck and Jacob Reyes had 90. James Taylor posted a 92 playing as an individual.
The first collegiate match ever played at Hunter's Point Golf Club, the Gene Bates designed links layout played at 6,991-yards to a par of 71.
